A buddy of mine I met on the UBC youtube group has challenged my to a duel (AKA: Friendly sparring match).
He is a kendo-ist with a few years of experience and training.
the challenge is his kendo vs. my western sword and shield.
we will also be doing some cutting together. should be a very fun day.
here's a video he posted as part of the challenge:
I love this video even though he gets my name wrong.
Oh and we will post lots of video.
the challenge will take place at my house this Sunday.

Holy semprini that video was funny. This sounds so exciting. I have not heard of anything so thrilling on SBG since last summer's duels.
Tom what weapon form will you be using? Will your opponent be using that two handed sword?
You better believe I will be tuning in for this show. You can count on me for post game analysis.
From what I can see of your opponents dress and attitude he seems like a very serious opponent. His attacks on the camera show quick, strong and aggressive attacks. He does not swing back to create openings so you are going to have to create the openings.
Do you have any video of your opponent fighting or practicing?

Why the hell does he keep on calling you Lanflaer?

Lanflaer is a misunderstanding. due to the terrible font used on youtube he thought the I of "Ianflaer" was an l (lowercase)
I will be using Sword and shield (24" center-punch round)
He will be using Kendo with single katana so far as I know.
I have never seen him fight nor he me.
he has several years of kendo training and experience
yes, I consider him a very serious, very worthy opponent that could certainly defeat me if I don't take him seriously and fight well (and maybe even then)
Just for the record I LOVE this video. he was actually hitting his privacy fence and not the camera that was being held by his wife. he's got a brave wife!

Tom, you have to win for us You know what to do. The Katana does not have much of a range advantage on you. That means he can't get to your legs unless you just hover in his range. Stay out of range, fake an attempt or two to cross into his range. When you decide to cross... get in fast... and get your shield on his hilt. Stay on it. If your shield is on his hilt, he can't swing his sword. Go back and forth with off-sides and wraps until you hit him. Keep you shield flat in front of you and the sword horizontal over the shield as you make the leap forward. As a kendo fighter he will not be experienced in high horizontal shots. He will make diagonal cuts that can't hit if you keep you guard as you move in. He is very use to making thrusts to the throat. He only need adjust that a little bit to thrust your face, so watch your range and come in fast to minimize his ability to snipe at you.

Watch the overhead cut and watch the first flicking cut to the hands or wrist.

Good luck Ian...and remember if you lose, you outta the family . Actually shields are VERY annoying if you using JSA strikes for the most part as they negate like 80% of what we do in most of the traditional JSA...I say most because shin-kendo does some very odd things that isn't very traditional...then again it's never claims to be such. So if he does that style, you maybe in a bit of a pickle. Otherwise, the biggest threat will be the stab. A shinai can stab at surprisingly fast speed...and it is a bit of a cheat since I find shinai's can stab faster then real swords can by a noticable amount. So what's the weapon selection? You use rattan and he uses shinai? If you have some money, get some barely 1 1/4 inch rattan and make a bastard sword with a 36 inch blade and make it hilt heavy. That should reduce his range advantage to pretty much nil hehe . Assuming you are familar with fighting with longer blades.

for a kendoka your friend is extremely slow in his strikes so you should use this to your advantage, his speed is slower than most SCA fighters, so if you are familiar with SCA the fight will be almost a lazy affair as your friend seems to focus on power rather than speed.

Let's hope he atacks like the kendokas do, with a kiai and running towards you. Then drop to one knee and let him walk in to your sword. (That worked for me once ;D) If not..... good luck

I have full faith in our Chief to win the day... I'd LOVE to be there, in fact, I would drive up there to witness this without reservation... ...except I belive Tom said it was THIS weekand? I have the In-laws visiting this weekand. All the MORE reason to drive up there and watch... ;D However... if I do that, it will be the couch for me for some time to come... and my bed is REALLY comffy and my wife very snuggly. I have offered to be Tom's second... so if he requires such, then I am duty bound to go, am I not? I'm sure my wife will understand... ...right?

Thanks for the support and tactical advice guys. "I have full faith in our Chief to win the day" "remember if you lose, you outta the family" "Tom, you have to win for us" "if you lose tom im going to have to call you Lanflaer for the rest of your life" (CrazyColeRogers) so ummm yeah, no pressure ;D
Fear not I will fight with all my rusted abilities
as for equipment, he will be using his shinai and wearing that set of bogu. that being the case I don't feel right hitting him with rattan (the bogu won't take it and won't protect him properly) so I made a medieval arming sword out of a shinai and closed cell foam padding. I call it the Hiroshi Hammer (icyberia's name is Hiroshi) I'll try to get a vid up in response to his today.

I mean, I hope you do well. ;D
