While I would still like some feedback about my little addendum above^...
I just wanted to let you guys know that I have talked to Paul about this, and we're thinking that each month the reigning cutting champs will be mentioned in the Digest. On top of that, Paul is considering possibly dishing out little prizes to the winners as well...

10 points for a ring
1 point for a chip
i think if chips are 1/10 then they should be allowed in any size

While I would still like some feedback about my little addendum above^... I just wanted to let you guys know that I have talked to Paul about this, and we're thinking that each month the reigning cutting champs will be mentioned in the Digest. On top of that, Paul is considering possibly dishing out little prizes to the winners as well... Very cool =). On the contest...I kind of agree with Marc. If you're attempting to get clean cuts on a milk jug or the like, the chips are flubs. Now, I've taken a milk jug, and attempted to whittle away at it to make it last as long as possible...with NO full rings, only chips. It's a different skill for sure. I say you have two separate counts, one for rings, one for chips...using DIFFERENT bottles. If you're cutting for rings, cut for rings, if you're intending to try for chips, cut for chips. Rings wouldn't count in an attempt for chips, or rather they would count as one chip...but chips wouldn't count in a ring cutting attempt. Takes all that mess of measuring and trying to maintain a double count and ratio for points out of it. One ring is 1 point, one chip is 1 point. What do you think? Also, what would be the standardized container? Are milk gallons the same the world over? I wouldn't think so considering we're the only ones that use gallons I think lol. Those are a nice medium one can usually get a lot of cuts out of though. 2 liter bottles might work. Just a few ideas here before you guys set any rules in stone. Cris

I see what you mean, but if going for chips only it just seems like it would be hard to keep up with them all and the potentially high number of small chips would make it hard to photograph and pick out all of them...not to mention a pain for the judge (me?) to count!
Granted and agreed, chipping away at a jug for as long as possible is indeed a skill in and of itself, but my idea was to create a single, standardized way to judge how well somebody dominates the jug--however they choose to go about reaching that common goal. IMO, having two different counting options for the same goal adds a little fun strategy to it.
I know I asked for opinions, and I don't want it to look like I am refuting them in favor of my own idea. Chipping and ringing skills are both totally valid in their own rights, regardless of how we count/discount them for the competition... I'm just trying to make a cool game out of both.
So I think I will keep refining my own idea about regulating chip size/worth in order to make both chips and rings fair point-makers during play. Again, wasn't trying to ask opinions and then not listen... just trying to make things simpler to count and keep track of, while keeping it challenging.
Cris, good point about the milk jugs. 2-liters is a much better idea, assuming they really are available worldwide! Not only that, but they are perfectly circular and do not have a handle portion to have to deal with. That could have made things a little difficult. That said, I guess 2-LITERS IT IS!
Will create the official thread shortly!

Anyone that can successfuly do multiple yokogiri on a 2 liter and get multiple onion rings is an artist.... they are too unstableand top heavy, and the plastic is a thicker gauge.... if anyone can do it they are better than me... I predict 3 rings at MOST....
A new standard cutting medium is needed IMO

Well, not sure about entering this discussion but where I come from a "chip" would be a disqualification from continuing any further. I don't cut bottles so that may mean something but a "chip" would probably equate to a "mountain cut" in JSA. Anything above would be counted but that one is certainly a flub.
Also angle comes into it. No wavering line in a horizontal, no scoops and a close to 45 dergree angle in a Kesa giri (diagonal).
Maybe chips are acceptable in some other arts.
I just say this as there are accepted rules in JSA but I also don't do video so really I shouldn't poke my nose in. I also would not enter anyway. But I in no way wish to diminish this competition by my own thoughts on scoring. That is is a "chip is a missed cut so you are out.

Chips shouldn't be a disqualification - just a different standard altogether. You also can't apply purely JSA rules to this - as I'd wager that a good portion of people who will participate will not have studied JSA at all. In fact I'd say there are a good number of participants who will not have had any formal sword training at all.
Of course - even if you don't do video you can still participate, unless you have no way of taking pictures at all (like me at the moment). In which case you'll have to wait till you get a camera (my situation - but I do intend on participating).
In any event, if you're talking about it, particularly in regard to rules and what "should be vs should not be" especially when talking about where you come from - you should participate.
I won't keep it a secret that I've always considered myself a fairly decent cutter - I know I need more work - but I'm not horrible at it. That being the case I do intend to participate... just so I can put my sword where my mouth is so to speak. Maybe you can join us in putting our swords where our mouths are.

I just put my sword were my mouth is and I can say it's not a good idea. I cut myself! just kidding but I did just post a ring cutting video. I didn't do well at all. I think it would be cool to have two different catagories: gallon jugs and 2 liter bottles. 2-liters are TOUGH to get more than 1 quiet cut on.

If you "chip" you miss. But you can say that you meant it to be that way. Anyway, don't take my way as I am not in it anyway.

Yeah I was thinking that too Tom. 2 liter bottles are not exactly steady things nor are they easy to get multiple clean cuts on. I know I can do fairly well with a gallon jug. 2 liter bottles well... I think the most I can ever remember getting is 3 and that was a fluke. lol Most of the time I get 1 or less.

Oh well, I just read the rules, and have to agree with the sentiment (expressed by some here already) that chips and cuts should be different altogether. If you are going for rings, chips should not count for anything or be a penalty.
I also like the idea of including the gallon jugs somehow.

AS I emphatically stated earlier, what Tom just did is going to happen 99% of the time with 2 liters ... they are not a good onion ring medium... there's a reason the contest has been going on for years at SFI using milkjugs....
An alternative may be a 2 foot length of pool noodle ... but with 2 liters this is going to be a dull contest....

Actually, Marc used a Masahiro...which isn't actually made by Masahiro. Search Masahiro "Bamboo" to find out more. So I'm assuming British 2L Milk Bottles will suffice? Care to post a photo of one? thanks, slav

I thought the milk jugs were the better option too...I was just putting out a suggestion to keep it fair world wide. We use 1 us gallon milk jugs, which I think have a wider base than the other milk jugs around the world. That gives us a distinct advantage I think.
Anyhow, I also thought of pool noodles, but...are those things pretty standard the world over?
I'm actually looking forward to playing around with this lol.
