Hey Again,
Sam, I just noticed your post above as well.... ok need to figure out the email notificaction thing. Yeah, that bench comes in very handy. Works well for when I'm sanding on a saya as well, but mainly my tying bench :-)
Ah the habaki. Thanks again for the nice words guys. Yep, the machi gane does indeed create the double lines as we were saying when we spoke. It actually hung out of the seam about an 1/8th of an inch when soldered, then got filed/ground down to reveal that cool double line. I am so pleased with how well it fits the blade. Like a glove I tell ya :-) I'm eager to make another as soon as I can thats for sure. I have a few candidates of my own that will benefit with new habaki and seppa, but I'm even more eager to start making them for others :-)
Ok, the email notification thingy lol I see only a bookmark option below and it is checked and allways is, but that doesnt do it. The other is for disabling smiley's heaven forbid :-) So.... Any other ideas? Do you get email notifications when posts or pms are made?
Ok, thanks again Take care,
Skip

Skip,
Your work continues to wow and amaze.... the tsuka-maki work goes without saying.... you've displayed your proficency with that for a while now...
I was not yet over my surprise with your wood working skills, when you began to throw habaki making into the mix.....
Wow..
The craftmanship on the habaki is simply stunning....
I am , for the most part , speechless.....
Your work exceeds that of most that have been in the business for years.....
WOW

Hello Folks,
Thank you all very much for the kind words. Very much appriciated indeed. :-)
Habaki and seppa are actually very fun to make. Just completed a set of silver seppa and am waiting to get them ( and sword ) shipped out soon... I'll get a couple pictures later this week before shipping.
Ichiban, I am not positive, but think maybe it came from Japan as the fuchi/kashira originally planned for the mount came from there. Not sure tho but will ask the owner... Very nice tsuba tho either way :-)
Again, thank you all for the kind words. If I didnt allready love doing this so much, I'd probably keep doing it just for the complimants ;-) JK But I really do love this work. Nothing liking making something with your bare hands... Take care all. Back with more soon,
Skip
P.S. Might be yours....? Need something done...? :-)

Hello Slavia,
:-) Well, yes and no :-) Am I taking on work, yes. Am I able to spend all the time I wish doing sword work... No not just yet :-)
I am one who doest ussually care to "air my laundry" in public places and I try to keep the personal stuff to a minimum. That being said, its only fare to try to give an explaination that doesnt beg for more info.... Hope the following will suffice...
With the health of a family member failing, I have responsibilities that require time spent out of the shop very often. I do my best to make up for this lost time on evenings and weekends, but I'm a very happily married man with two children at home. For me, Family and Friends are the true rich's in life and my priorities are focused there.
So, to answer your question.... Yes I am working on swords, but for now my time is about equally split between that and Family :-)
Take Care,
Skip

For me, Family and Friends are the true rich's in life and my priorities are focused there. Sounds to me like your priorities are right where they should be... Should I ever be so lucky as to have a blade mounted by you at some point, I'll treasure it all the more knowing that you love the craft and the work enough that it commands any of your time, when you have such other compelling considerations.

I have been following your work for sometime now Skip. The tsukamaki is coming along quite well, you are quickly moving your way right up the ladder. The habaki is also very good looking. I do have a question though. Was it the customers request to have the edges rounded off or was that just your method?
Best wishes for you and the family and I look forward to working with you in the future.

Hey Folks,
Shadow, thank you very much :-) I look forward to hopefully doing some work for you someday as well.
Marabunta :-) Thank you as well :-) I look forward to future projects as well. The habaki .... The rounded edges are indeed my method, but did please the owner. There are so many ways to "finish" a habaki, or seppa. In this case the high polish and rounded edges "fit" . One thing to note however is that allthough the edges may appear rounded, this is partailly a visual effect of the high polish. When felt in hand, the edges feel farely "sharp". Done in a less polished manner, the edges would for sure appear much sharper and not rounded at all... Does that make sense ?
Thanks again folks for the good will :-) Take care,
Skip
