Hello agian Thanks Sam, appriciate the kind words. Ok, thought I put this up yesterday, but cant seem to find it here or any other thread I've posted to so.... Get ready for a color contrast on this one. It goes to a Oni thru hardened blade that is out for some work ... so for now just the tsuka. I just love the menuki used on this one. Bee's or wasps I'm not sure, but either way, there just cool. And the album s80.photobucket.com/albums/j162/HardKnox_01/Oni%20Forge%20TH%20WIP/Take care, Skip

I like the fittings quite a bit. I wouldn't have chosen the orange myself lol...but there's no denying the quality of the wrap, and altogether I think it actually looks nice.

Hey Guys, It is a very bold tsuka. Turned out well, but I'm not sure that orange is for me. I can't wait to finish the mount ( no hints :-) ) as once its completed, the orange will work well with the rest. Suffice it to say, the blade will match the ito ;-) Unique to a degree I have the KC tsuka about half wraped and I cant wait to show the Hira in its new shoes :-) Again, no hints, but its theme fits this Big Hira very well. Ricky did the sword community a favor by having these 3 swords made and then allowing them out to find new homes. I know all 3 owners are pretty darn proud of having one. Worked on a customers habaki for a couple hours with the smith, then came home and roughed out a silver seppa, got the wrap well underway for the KC, then spent a couple good hours talking with Cris :-) Good talk Cris !!! I'll have a few pictures of one of the habaki I'm making, a few seppa and the KC next week. Till then....Here's a shot of my bodger bench. Used as a third hand when wraping a tsuka. :-) Unless your real good with your feet, born with a third hand, or just a miracle worker, you have to have something This works very well fo me :-) Thanks again for looking and the kind words all. This stuff is so much fun :-) Skip

Ok Skip...that bench is just flat cool lol. I can already think of about 10 uses for it lol...and if I could only mount a hammer...
Seriously though...awesome work. The guys who frequent this section are definitely saving that picture lol.
As for our chat...yeah it was great =). I can't wait to get started on that project we talked about lol.
Oh and by the way!! I remembered what you were going to send. I'll shoot it over in reply to your PM.
Top notch work as always man.

Hey Again, That lil' bench makes such a big differance for me. I'd be lost with out it now lol I made a set of seppa as I mentioned in copper. Very basic. Clean smooth edges, no ridges or patterns. This is just how I prefer a seppa most of the time. Also working on a set of silver seppa to match a tanto fuchi kashira set also is solid silver. These are going to be thicker than average at about 1.5mm with well rounded edges. Still very rough, but this is a "project" kind of thread Oh, and I have 2 habaki underway. Here's a shot of #1 #2 doesnt have the notch cut yet to meet the mune machi. KC is sooo close lol I should have pictures up very soon. James Raw Coming Soon !!! Thanks again for looking. Take care, Skip

Very impressive things in this thread, and imo beautiful orange ito color.
I must ask skipgardner: have you dyed it yourself or is that ito possible to buy somewhere in that color?

Oh, and I have 2 habaki underway. Here's a shot of #1 #2 doesnt have the notch cut yet to meet the mune machi. Hey bud =). One thing that may help you out a little bit...not to mention save you some copper lol, is to 'preforge' a bit of angle into the billet so to speak. The way you're doing it now works...but unless you're sacrificing all that copper to the gods of stock removal for a reason lol...it could be done a tiny bit more efficiently =). If you do it right, you only need a little over half the width of copper to start with. So for a 1" habaki, 3/4" wide stock would work perfectly. Particularly in the thickness you have it there (which looks to be about 3/16" or larger?). For myself, I've been looking at less 'long' habaki, and more into shorter designs. I've also got some other cool ideas in the works...which you'll see if this blade survives heat treat this evening =). Call it...'traditionally inspired' as we talked about on the phone lol =). Cris

Hey Cris,
I agree completely :-) Call that a rough draft, as its now toast lol was coming along ok, but in reality, had a weakness caused by me. Exactly what your saying is what I should have done. By not doing so, the copper was too soft, I got to thin, and developed a small crack. So I broke it in half lol
The second is coming along much better. The copper stock is still the same, but I hammered it much better this time working the thickness down at a taper on each side. Did this prior to making the 90. Then the "U" shape and used steel the same thickness of the blade to sqaure out the u shape It is now pretty hard as it has been worked well, but thinner and tappered.
Notch is cut, and I've begun shaping. I'll throw up some pictures soon, no time for camera today. I've saved the broken habaki of course.
Thanks Cris. Everything you said was pretty much echoed by the smith I am working with as well. Lessoned learned :-) Take care,
Skip

I rephrase my questiont then; anyone who knows or think they know are welcome to answer:
Are there anyone who knows if this ito with that orange color is "home dyed"? Or if it is sold somewhere in that color?

K, a quick look over at Fred Lohman's site and Shadowofleaves shows that they both sell ito in an Orange color. I have no idea if it is the same as the one Skip used, but Fred Lohman will sell you a sample pack of his silk for $10, so you can see for yourself (in person) the exact color. Maybe Shadow of leaves will do the same? Fred LohmanShadow of Leaves

Thanks dj! It´s funny, I´ve searched several times on Shadows of leaves after ito but never found any ito at all on that site, before now. Like the side don´t load up completely or something. I probably can´t read, or search, or both;)

Hello All, K I'm sorry didnt see your post Yes, the ito comes from Fred Lohman www.Japanese-Sword.com I have never tried dying ito before, theres allready so many colors to choose from :-) Again, missed your post Sorry, Thanks for answering him DJ :-) Dont ever hesitate to rattle my cage folks if I miss a post Kind of brings up a question tho Other forums I belong to send me email notification when I get pms or there are posts to threads I've allready posted in.... Can we do that here...? Some sort of setting maybe I am missing...? Ok, I'd like to throw up a couple of pictures. This is actually habaki #3 For a client mount I'm doing. I did a great deal of the work myself as I was being "trained" :-) I'll be doing more to it I hope See the brass habaki (all production) I've done a bit of file work and what not. The copper one is still a bit bulky for the mount so will get slimmer before its actually done. Maybe shortened a bit as well down to about an inch or so. Anyways, habaki #2 is on hold as I'm to busy to finish it right now :-) Its for my own blade so .... it can wait. I will say this. I really enjoy making these. I look forward to many habaki in my future :-) I hope to make a silver one soon. The one on the right is the one being replaced mine is the fat one :-) Another shot And the Brass ones I'll update again when the new copper habaki is completely finished. Fits the blade very well. It will be done and posted soon :-) Making the saya now so need it done. More to come.... Thanks for looking, Skip
