Hello I met my gf in a "chivalrous sword handling class" almost a year ago. We are still dating (moving in together soon) and I have been thinking of buying her a steel blade. Problem is, she's very peculiar about what she likes. She doesn't like heavy sword as they hurt her wrist. She prefers single handed sword, as she has no interest in wielding one two handed. She doesn't like viking swords. And it should be something able to cut a pumpkin. I've made a few suggestions, all turned down so far. However, today she sent me this link: www.medieval-swords.info/swords/celtic-norse-sword.htmI thought it looked a bit... rough, but I stared reading about this manufacturer (including here - huzza for search feature). However, what I read wasn't very promising: they are apparently quite heavy. So... I thought that maybe if I asked you fine folks, one or more of you could suggest a sword with a very similar look, but lighter and better quality? thanks a million! Ancalagon

Well I wouldn't go for a ritter steel if you are looking for a light sword, how much are you looking to spend?

I second that, the other one is very crude!!!! And you can have the palmel engraved on the windlass with the triskel by some one and have her hart........SanMarc.

You could buy the Windlass XIV - which by the way would be an awesome choice - through DBK Custom swords and have the pommel inset with a decor piece : www.dbkcustomswords.com/pommeldecor.htmlI'd suggest piece "L" to imitate the same style as the Ritter. You could even have Brian make up a timber grip; or finish the standard timber grip in a nice stain.

I don't want to butt heads here but 2lbs 10 ounces could be pretty heavy for a one hander intended to be used by a female for cutting, depending on her level of strength/technique. Can you give some examples of what she would call a heavy sword?

Thank you for the suggestion - the customization is a nice angle that I haven't thought of... I will try to find a review of this sword on here, but while we are at it, anyone knows how it handles? (edit: vyapada, you aren't "butting heads", in fact I was wondering about what you were thinking...)
I spoke to her again this morning and found out my understanding of her preference was a bit off. She doesn't like viking swords because the quillions are too short, but also the handle - she likes to have a bit of extra room for a second hand if need be.

ok so a bastard sword of some description, a short handled bastard sword. Maybe go custom and talk to Matt Stagmer he can probably do exactly what you want. What sort of swordsmanship does she do that she needs the quillions?

Hey Brian... Have you ever hand the chance to handle that sword? It dosn't say who the manufacture is, but the discription is suggestive of Gen2... however, the sword is VERY light for one of their blades. At that size and weight, I would think it would be a VERY quick sword... however, I wonder if the cross is removeable/replaceable from the pommel, as it's not my thing.

That is the gen 2 joan of arc sword and I think that you are right in your assumption as to the quickness of the blade in the hand, 1.5 lbs is unheard of!

I've been looking for a Euro one handed sword... and with the wieght that light on a Gen2 blade, now I'm very currious. I'm hopping someone has had a chance to handle it tho... but if not, maybe I'll grow some balls and pick it up, give it a review here. I'm VERY currious. ![:P](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Congrats Ancalagon! I am curious too. I am thinking a lighter weight western sword would be best for me too (especially one handed), and all the ones I have seen are well well over 2 lbs. This is the first one I have heard about that is under 2 ![8-)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) Thanks Brian. Anyone know of any other lighter weight swords?

Depends what you are after Deb, windlass offer some beautiful short swords that are good weight. Although a slightly heavier sword is good if you are just starting out for condition the muscles properly. The three I would love to try are the italian short sword which is just a classy looking blade. The other two I'd love to try is the sword of troy and the swiss baselard.

My fiancee a few years ago settled on this... www.reliks.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=2257We had a very similar argument over what she desired cosmetically and what was best for the practicing of her novice swordsmanship skills. It's light, yet afforded a solid two-handed grip for her small hands. She was slightly indifferent at first, but came to absolutely love it. Put it into a CF Ranger belt for her and she will fall in love with it. The Sword of Auray was given a 5 out of 5 rating during its review here: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/auray.htmlSoH has a few of these left here, store.swordsofhonor.com/swordofauray.html for a fairly good price. You might find it cheaper elsewhere though.

Hello
First of all, I want to thank all of you, you folks rock!
Second, I will apologize for the slightly misleading info I gave, it seems I was wrong about the handle length at first. She doesn't want a bastard sword as in "a true hand and a half/longsword", but rather as in a single handed sword with a bit of extra room.
She has done sword handling with a wooden waster for about a year and a half now, and find her wrist sometimes get sore after practice. She has a "wrist intensive" job, so she fears that a steel blade could make things worse if it's heavy.
On to the suggestions:
The hanwei marshal sword I have seen and handled, as one of my teachers has it. I found it to be a bit point heavy - not surprising, as the PoB is 8 inches. This gives it blade presence and makes it a good cutter, but it's not a good candidate. Furthermore, my gf saw it and thought it was ugly - sorry.
The joan of arc sword is incredibly light - if it wasn't gen 2 or another maker of some repute making it, I would have dismissed it. It certainly seems to fit the right criterias as to size etc. However, it has a cross on the pommel which is a big, big no-no. I would have to contact Gen 2 and see if it's possible to get a plain one instead. And I don't know if she would like it even without that. Still, suggestion passed on.
The sword of auray is another very interesting suggestion that I have passed on. We'll see if she likes it.
Once again, thank you all, and if you have other suggestions, keep them coming!
