That one is pretty pricy... but if she digs the Irish Ring pommel style sword, I have seen that style made by MANY different manufacturers in many differernt shapes and sizes. Look around and you'll find plently with a very similar look.

That one is pretty pricy... but if she digs the Irish Ring pommel style sword, I have seen that style made by MANY different manufacturers in many differernt shapes and sizes. Look around and you'll find plently with a very similar look. I had mixed feelings when I saw her link... part of me went "woho, good sword!" while another (my wallet) went "nooo....". But I would have been willing to pay for it. She says she likes the Ritter steel one better, and is uncomfortable with the A&A price. I have looked around for other Irish ring pommel swords, and I did not find many. Of those I did found, most are longsword (too big for her). Others are... well not very pretty. None have the same blade profile. I can tell you that it's not just the pommel that does it - she didn't like the albion kern for example. Anyway, we'll see what happens. Once again thanks for the help. Ancalagon P.S. the hsu miadao confuses me - is this a historical model?

She went from not liking flared quillions to liking them? Hmm.
I have to be honest, if she is this fickle, then I would damn sure not buy her a $700 sword ($800 with a cheap sheath, which she probably would not like either, so you might get boned for a $400+ CF scabbard/belt too). I'd give her a price range (hey, its SBG - go sub-$300) and let her choose. If she did not like anything she seen, then she could buy her own.

I'm starting to get more insight in her selection process - it seems to be in part "cultural". She really likes Celtic, Irish and Scottish things... so she looks for those at first. And it's becoming obvious to me that she has been looking - a lot of my suggestions she had seen already. Conversely, she doesn't like things which reminds her of the crusade or other such things.
Odingaard, I don't know if she likes the flared quillion - she probably likes it because of it being Irish, and some other factors. She did say she didn't like it as much - maybe it's because of the flared quillions she likes it less? I don't think there is grounds for calling her fickle here...
But we'll see. I think we may lay the sword buying to the side for a while.

No offense, but every woman I have ever met has been fickle at some point. They like this, they change their mind, they like that. It's not an insult, just an observation.
Honestly, I would go for the least expensive option first and see her actual use/reaction to it. Observe how she cares, uses, and respects the sword. Does it get used daily or does it lay under the bed for months on end? Does it end up covered in rust or does it always have a nice finish.
If she continued on the cultural route, upgrade her as her intent drives her and she has demonstrated the ability to show that she is 100% sincere in the interest.
I speak from experience here. I have wasted literally thousands of dollars on swords (and firearms) for significant others over the years. In very few cases have I found that the first selection is the correct selection. However, by choosing wisely, you can dampen the effect on your wallet.

So, a final update, for now... My gf doesn't want to buy a mediocre blade, and doesn't want me to pay 700$ for something she won't use that much anyway. So I'll be buying her something else for Christmas. I know this is pretty anti-climatic, but I wanted to thank all of you for your input and to tell you how it turned out. Now, I am thinking about what I sword I will be getting for myself (because I don't own a sharp yet, only a blunt). But that's a new thread cheers, Ancalagon
