Well, common sense prevailed and i ordered some non-tobacco shisha instead. I'll just drink the tea I also ordered like a normal person I guess. Cross my heart!

What did you get? I'm eager to see what you make of it.

A variety pack from a brand called Tanya. Won't be here till Thursday so I'll hopefully give some feedback after work that day. With that said, I have never been a smoker outside of using my hookah once in a blue moon so take anything I say with a big grain of salt.

Oh yeah, Tanya. Our little pink hookah is a Tanya model. I don't know if I realized they did non-tobacco stuff.
Been looking around for anything else in a blue raspberry vein, because it's probably my favorite flavor for anything, but there's only one or two I'm seeing and they all have tobacco. Might just deal with it.

I'm pretty sure that the stuff I had in Turkey was always tobacco free cause I can't see my sister every smoking nicotine, but I could be wrong.

So the Hydro Herbal tobacco-free, nicotine-free shisha I bought a small pack of wasn't getting along with the pocket hookah. Figured I'd give it a shot on a better hookah. Turns out it's just not good. 50g for $3, so it was worth a shot, but I'll be trying other brands next time. Supposed to be a blue raspberry flavor. It kinda smells it, a bit, when burning...but hardly any taste to it at all aside from just kinda rancid. Oh well, live and learn. Yea blueberry - plant-is similar, smells like it but the flavour isn't too strong. It's so disappointing when you are all hyped up for it. I wonder what they use in tabacco free? I wonder if it's worst than tabacco? If it's not soaked stones or aromatised gel/jelly, it's most probably glycerin cream/paste or cellulose fibre (which should normally be the one with the most similar consistency to tobacco). Not sure about Flavour compared to tobacco-ones though.

Side-by-side of Hydro Herbal's "qing rubus" (non-tobacco, left) and Starbuzz's "Queen of Sex" (tobacco, right) for a visual comparison. Edit: I forgot my third option, Såmåwi Shishå's pink lemonade (non-tobacco, CBD-infused) Similar consistency to the Hydro Herbal (left), as seen here:

First of the latest two, an investigation into "travel hookah" options. This one was a whopping $25 and feels every bit as cheap, but I'll withhold judgement until I actually try it out. Alongside the $5 "pocket hookah" (front, center) and our DUD Prende (left) for size comparison. Seems like a neat little package, but again: it's cheap. Gonna see how it does, hopefully soon.

Well, the Tanya packs came in and I'm trying the orange. Not relay great if you ask me. It has some flavor but it seems rather weak, at least to me. Keep in mind, i rarely use this thing so low my hookah skills and limited exposure to brands could play a part in this. Spent 20 bucks for a dozen 50g packs, so not the worst purchase i made.

From what little I know, you have to fiddle with everything from the density of tobacco in the bowl (I see "fluffy pack" spoken of often), to thickness of foil and the number of holes in it, to how much heat (number and size of coals) and just kinda figure out what works best.
People also carry on about bowl type and HMD but eh...

Yeah, I put in a fair amount and used a single coal for the first run. I'll fiddle around and see if I can get some improved results over the weekend.

Another thing I constantly see is the insistence that quick-light coals are terrible and natural coconut is the way to go. I've tried both and yeah, the coconut stuff is a bit less harsh, but I don't have the patience to cook them.

Read the same but the quick light coals never caused me to much trouble and when your as casual a me, a quick light gets the job done

Agreed. 5-10 minutes on an electric burner or hit it with a lighter for 5 seconds and wait two minutes for full effect. Hmm...
I think part of my obsession stems from the excitement of the trial-and-error learning curve. It's one thing to read guides and watch videos, but one can only determine one's own "best way" by oneself.
It's also just the collector in me that wants ALL THE THINGS. So far I've got four hookahs, with one more in the mail. We have the DUD for our medium-size, single-hose model, the Tanya for a small, two-hose, the silly little pocket hookah for the quick session on-the-go, and now the Hookah 2 Go for a larger, but still more easily portable unit. I'm excited for the other one, because it's advertised as a "car hookah" that fits in a cupholder and completely encloses the coals so they don't go rolling around. Should be interesting.

Just received word that the other hookah I ordered was determined by the shipping agency to be a "restricted item" and, as such, I will not be receiving it. I did get a refund, at least, but I'm disappointed.
For anyone wondering, it was an El Badia P1. I couldn't find it at a US-based shop, so I ordered from England and paid handsomely for the currency conversion and shipping. There are similar models by other brands, one of which also seems to be UK/EU locked, but this one had the best reviews and generally the better aesthetics and more promising functionality.
Oh well, onto Plan B. First, to figure out Plan B...

I can just imagine getting pull over like once a week for having a vaguely bong shaped object in the car though. I did go ahead and use several layers of foil instead of one and I think it really help. Pretty sure the coal was burning the shisha faster than it should have since it was so close and that caused the flavor to burnout so quick.

There are similar options, some comparably priced, but I liked that one. Oh well. Trying this one out today: Little while to get going and the cap gets too hot to open the vents (whole thing is plastic, doesn't help) but overall one been at it for an hour or so and can still taste the pink lemonade.

Against my better judgement, I ordered the Boosey off Amazon. Should deliver by Wednesday; could've had it Sunday for an extra $12 but Wednesday works for me and was free.
Still down $40+ but hopefully I won't go completely broke before my next paycheck...again...
