Anybody here partake? I'm not generally one for tobacco use, but years before we ever met, one of my girlfriend's long-ago friends introduced her to smoking hookah, and she'd kept it for years as an occasional treat. We've gone a handful of times to a local hookah lounge, which we like the atmosphere of quite a lot, but it's been closed since the start of the pandemic. She's been though a lot lately, stressing over this and that, and saying, often, how much she just wants to chill with a hookah and get the edge off for a bit. So, for her birthday this year, I bought her one of her very own, and have done a little reading on how to properly prepare and maintain a hookah. Unfortunately, the starter kit, tobacco, and coals I originally ordered a week prior to her birthday didn't ship out in time, so the day after, we went to a local place and picked one out. Luckily, they also carried her favorite flavor, so I bought that, too. We're currently sitting at our second at-home session, enjoying some pizza and a drink, with the first hookah we bought, since it finally showed up today. Unfortunately, I can't get the pictures small enough and my Photobucket account doesn't allow sharing, so hopefully the links work: Edit: Nope, but I downloaded the crappy tiny pictures so here goes. Tonight: Last week:

I've been considering getting one for a while. I've never tried one, but back when I used to like drinking, I could always imagine these being the perfect thing to accompany it.
I have a "water pipe" that's quite similar. Does it count? Lol

We don't talk about what you smoke. If you're interested, though, you can get started pretty cheap. We picked up the pink hookah, with two hoses, as a starter kit that came with the hookah, a pair of tongs, a reusable screen, a pack of quick-light coals, and two random boxes of flavored tobacco for $40. We paid $70 for the blue one, but it's bigger and a bit higher quality. Only one hose, though. Came with a fancy LED gizmo that goes underneath it, which is neat. Had to buy coals and tobacco separately, though. All-in for two hookah, two 1kg boxes of natural, coconut coals, two packs of quick-lights, total 350g of her favorite flavor plus two 50g packs we'll try later, plus an electric and a gas burner for the good coals, two reusable screens, plus a wind cover that came with its own bowl, and I'm forgetting more, I've spent about $250. One can get by on much less, but we got impatient and bought things we already "had" because we didn't "have" them yet. This is going to be a once, maybe twice a week treat, so what we have will last us a while and we've already gotten our money's worth versus going to the local places.

How long do the coals burn and how much shisha do you typically use a session? Tbh I completely forgot hookahs existed. I gotta get me one. My lungs have taken my livers place

How long do the coals burn and how much shisha do you typically use a session? For the bigger, blue hookah, we use two coals, which burn for at least an hour. We've yet to finish one. On the smaller, pink hookah, we only used one coal. As for how much shisha, I don't know as I don't exactly measure it out. One came with, what I assume is, a fairly standard size, Egyptian style bowl. I pack it mostly full, then fluff it a bit. Our other model features a much smaller bowl, 2/3 to 1/2 the size of the larger, and the first time I packed it a bit too full and burned the top layer. We've had three or four hour-plus sessions out of a 250g tin that doesn't look any lighter for it. Probably 5g or so each go? Maybe I'll weigh the bag later, lol.

How does it feel in the lungs? I imagine an hour of smoking to be pretty brutal on the lungs. I only smoke my "water pipe" for a minute at the longest

Gotta take it slow and appreciate the experience, also be mindful of your heat. Our second outing, on the blue one, I added a second coal after the first few minutes because the smoke was kinda weak. A few minutes later I was choking on it and had to move the coals aside for a bit. It's a tricky balance. Can't pull too hard, but you've gotta pull hard enough.
We only do it once a week so our lungs can recover a bit; sometimes we'll still taste it two days later...

I thought that hookahs were made for hashish? Boy. I need to have a talk with my sixth grade teachers about that. 😾

Djjinja: It's definitely better enjoyed socially. You can even buy river tip covers for sharing the same hose. Sparked: Well, hassish is definitely a thing and I can't say whether it was the original or not, but all of my experiences have been with flavor-coated tobacco. There are companies that even make tobacco-free and nicotine-free flavored shisha, which seems interesting, but since it's the nicotine that does what she wants we're using that in moderation for now. Oh, and I do tend to enjoy it with a beer.

Something between 1/4 to 1/3 tobacco, the rest is molasses (syrup ?) and little bit miscellaneous flavours/aromas.
In France, there are hookah bars (used to ?), so definitely a social thing too.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mu%CA%BDasselHookah has spread pretty far and wide from its Middle-Eastern origins. There are three or four cafes/lounges near me. Most seem to cater to either the "modern" or "club" aesthetic, but the one we go to, Aladdin's, feels like hanging out in some guy's living room, except you're right on one of the busiest streets in the city of Richmond, which makes Friday night hookah pretty interesting people watching.
