Who knows, possibly both, but at this price if the heat treat is good I'd say its a pretty good deal for a JKOO quality sword.
Too bad we don't see the kissaki.
And 'high carbon steel' means its probably 1045.

$55 shipping. I'm wondering if I should buy one just because.

Nevermind, just purchased one. Like I need another sword. I'll let you guys know what's what when it arrives.
Stupid sword sale. Supposedly they are only making 15 for their 15th anniversary and each one will be marked accordingly. Maybe i've bought a collector item, or maybe it's mall ninja blade. Who knows. I ordered the bo-hi because I don't have one like that already, so whatever. Worse case it will make good beater.

I sent a message suggesting the steel used be listed. My guess, knowing Van Yang, would be 1095 or T10...if for no other reason that he could guess people would be pissed if 1045 ("low carbon" steel) was used when the site specifically says "high carbon steel"...which to me, is 1095 or T10. Also they have made their less expensive stuff out of the better steels.
And yes, shipping is extra. I ordered a deep discount sanmai...blade for $99 back about end of April I think...and then asked for a bunch of various furniture options which ran it to about $200 and change with shipping included.
(I did not need another sword, but could not resist the deep discounted price...)

All but one of their offerings is T-10. I would assume that their anniversary edition would be at least that.
But it doesn't matter now, I ordered one. I'm interested in seeing what serial number I get.

Its tempting, but I don't need another katana. What I do like is that there are actual close-up pictures of some of their koshirae. Not an expert on materials or anything, but those tonbo koshirae look pretty good. I have a katana from them that should hopefully be finished some time this month. Got some vague looking dragon koshirae on them. Wonder if some of the dragon pictures on these $99 are the same that will come on mine?
Interesting saya options. Colorful! No black same options, though. Oh well. I hope the 15 people who buy these get something really nice and enjoyable!

Wow, 1095 carbon steel, hishigami, cast brass fitting and is that a rayskin wrap saya - for $99? It costs me $30-50 for Hishigami at every forge I know. Brass parts run at about $30-50. Rayskin wrap saya, same ballpark. 1095 blade, hard to say - but the parts alone are worth several times the asking price so this is definitely one heck of a deal. There is no way they are making money on this..
Just amazed. You all know what I think about companies like this, but this is such low risk if even half of it was what it seems you can't go wrong..

Usually this are rejected customer orders (due to not meeting the asked for custom options) or orders where the customer jumped off for some cause; from our experience you cant go too wrong with such a offer. We did careful approach to cutting with them anyway to see if there is something wrong. Edit: this seems special. We jumped on it.

From my point of view, a company that has a special edition to celebrate an important event will not use rejects. Traditionally, the items are made in one batch, and hand selected and reviewed by management to ensure they meet the very highest standards. The company never makes money from these things, but instead they use them for advertising.
I've never dealt with JKOO, so I won't know what to compare the sword with. Hopefully it's something really special, if not, it will make a very nice beater none the less. Either way, I'm one of the 15.

Well, jumped the gun and ordered one. Haven't bought any Japanese style weapon for a year now (still waiting for my SBG custom, I'm not the only one), and was considering getting a katana for our son's BD next January, it may be that one if I like it enough.
I am not a fan of JKOO habaki fitting and tsuka so far tbh, but it's fixable. And like Paul said, even if half of the fittings are crap except for the blade its still worth it if one don't mind some hand work.

I’d like one. I haven’t bought a sword this year. It’s tempting but I’ll stay put due to the virus and what I will have to go through in order to receive it. There have been several tempting offers but due to circumstances I’ve passed on all.

So it looks like 3 of the 15 are going to forum members. It will be interesting to see what we get. I wonder if we will all get #1? If so, then we know that the "limited run of 15" is a crock of s*it. Or, they might be really spectacular. We will have to start a special thread to compare what we get- that should be fun! We can then all call ourselves Borg names based of our swords: One of Fifteen, Six of Fifteen, etc.
Or thinking more on it, the swords will already be "named" by their numbers. When somebody asks about the sword in the collection, you can reply, "yes, that one. It's called "X of 15""
I'm almost willing to spend the $150 just for the excitement of the anticipation. Still, the blade looks really nice in the photos. I've always maintained the position that it's better to have a good blade with bad fittings rather than the other way around. You can always change the fittings later on, but there is nothing you can do about a bad blade.
And so the wait begins...

Most sites I looked up say high carbon steel starts with at least 0,6 % carbon, with 0,45 - 0,55 % carbon they call it medium carbon steel.

Heh, just received a mail from Mr. Kane: 'Thanks for your order. But I'm sorry to tell we can't ship sword to Canada at present because of COVID-19. the SF express only ship to USA at present. EMS and DHL still not available. I'm not sure when we can ship sword again. so I would like refunds to you. or I will keep this sword for you 2 months if we can ship it that time.'
I answered to keep the order active, time will tell.
