I love the stuff. After handling it a while, the residue stops and feels like a nice fabric on the handle Friction tape does feel good. As I said two of my kukris are still wrapped in it. Rescue tape is more pliable forming to ridges and gullies better, a fact that I like. It also has no adhesive. I know what friction tape is, but clue me in on what you mean by 'rescue tape'. (?)

I don't think I've ever seen rescue tape before. Just looked it up

It is cheaper than buying a garden hose and I’ve made two repairs on my hose and it worked where nothing else has due to the pressure. I think the last repair was two years ago the first about a year before and are still holding. Getting back to wrapping grips with the stuff. The only objection I have with it on my sword grips is that it is shinny, looking like what it is-plastic. So I dust with flat black spray paint and presto. It takes to the paint well and retains the paint for a reasonable time. Page 2 of this thread shows reprofiling the gripe of my M1860 sabre which made a world of difference to handling. Below is my German Bastard Sword with the entire grip wrapped with it to show how pliable it is. There was nothing wrong with the original grip, just wrapped it for protection a few years back.

From what I've read in wikipedia rescue tape seems to be very similar to the grip band I use, probably the same basic stuff, silicone rubber. But my grip band feels rather like rubber and has some texture, and it's not shiny.

That could very well be. I’m anxious to try Grip Band. I believe at this point the biggest difference is in the thickness. Rescue tape is thin and has the advantage of following the original contours well. Whereas Band Grip is thicker and is better at building up the surface better. So far as CoF is concerned Band Grip probably has the advantage there also, but I have no problem with the rescue tape in that regards.

I guess I need to do that to my Windlass GBS also. The stitching on the grip can be a little annoying at times, unless wearing gloves. I just used it on my Hanwei LS to make the grip a bit fatter, which worked out perfectly.

I have found wrapping the grip helps hiding the felt seam making it more comfortable. I first discovered this with my Windlass XIV when I wrapped with heavy waxed linen thread designed for leather work. The tape helps too.

I may give the rescue tape a shot. I know the grip band stuff works, but now you've got me wondering about the difference in feel.

I'm experimenting now with a second wrap over a wrap I already did. It depends also on the fact that I don't like gloves. It's interesting to form different thickness and forms with or without the help of other stuff like other tape strips or the soft furniture sliders. For me thick and a bit softer grips help much to handle heavier blades. At least I know now why I like the Hanwei axe handle tsuka.

My new Windlass 1906 saber after "andinizing", sharpened the false edge at the tip area and upholstered and wrapped the grip. I used a furniture slider on the front side under middle and ring finger and a second one on the rear side just over the pommel cap. The original grip is a good one but now it's better and the saber handles better than before. And here my new kukris. Didn't feel secure with the wooden grips. Now I do! The giant kukri has a very thick grip and the wrap makes it even thicker, but I can control it better now. The grip is so big that the giant kukri looks much smaller than it is. But it's a monster, 60 cm blade and 5 lb heavy.

This is the first I have heard of the silicone-based grip band or rescue tape but the results look intriguing. Have not been too keen on other wrappings with an adhesive backing that could mess up the surface underneath.
I may just need to try this out... will probably go with the thinner rescue tape first.

My new Bat'leth had a really bad grip wrap. No problemo: I admit there's not much visual difference but the grips are tight, thicker and handier now. It weights 2,35 kg / 5 lb. and it handles better with the additional wrap (or less poor).

My new Bat'leth had a really bad grip wrap. Passed your examination for the master's certificate of the grip wrap guild! Party time!

we often use whats called "Finger-Pflaster" here in Germany; drenched in epoxy or superglue, it gives a nice solid feel, and looks somehow "old". Watch your color choice of course... Attachments:

Your materials look rather historical correct but my grip band feels so good in the hand.
