Grip band on my new Dragon King Modern Katana. I wanted the nice two menuki still being visible, but also a softer thicker grip. I gave it some kind of hour glass shape with a little bulb in the middle. I used a not textured band which I ordered accidentally.

Windlass Signature Series Persian Saber/Scimitar. Original weight just 730 g, but nevertheless too blade heavy and the grip too small for my hands. First I wrapped 4 thin lead strips around, then 2 grip bands. Now 843 g. I know it looks terrible but it's a much better sword now, better mass distribution and better to handle.

I don't like the tennis tape that much. I love how hockey tape feels and works, but that's absolutely useless as grip tape since it oozes glue everywhere, then I tried self adhering bandages and found them to feel really nice (you can get them everywhere now). They are pretty grippy but also soft and fabric-y. They do hold to the base material without glue just friction (especially if you put on a foundation of self fusing silicone tape) and although I sew the ends you don't necessarily need to (at least the first time, if it comes lose it won't hold again). You need two layers, one will rub through after enough use (like 3-4 hours of cleaving tree branches with the CS machete), two or more layers will entangle and toughen up a bit and create a felt-like material. Even though it isn't as durable as tennis tape (guessing here, no idea how that tennis tape would have survived it) I like how it feels. Leather is still best but this is easy, fast and thin, it won't change the general dimensions of the grip, but still smooth over sharp corners like wire wrap without being soft like tennis tape. The Hanwei/Tinker arming sword will get a leather wrap ofer the new core I made, also will make a new pommel or at least better looking weights (have all the parts but I don't want to try something I might mess up right now). And the Bastardsword iss the only sword I have where I like the tennis racket grip tape - the thing is I didn't do that wrap and can't reproduce it Not that I have tried too many times though
Before and after a "lazy afternoon" of angering the Ents. Looks rough but still comfortable - maybe even more now, softer and less rubbery.
Just something to try if you don't like the texture of tennis tape.
