Okay so I got a couple of ronin euro swords today in the mail. First the sword porn I suppose and I will post a quick first impression on them.
So on the two handed saber (that is not a krieg), the pommel is HUGE. But since I normally hold disk pommels in the lower hand, it fits me just fine. People who like normal scent stopper pommels however will probably HATE these things as they feel almost like disk pommels due to the size and I hold them similar to how I hold disk pommels (that is with the bottom two or three fingers open and pulling down with my top fingers until it holds snuggly in place). The crossguard is also really thick and the whole thing is pretty heavy in hand at a stand still. However the heavy pommel and crossguard makes it feel better once you start to actually move the sword and swing the sword one handed is actually pretty easy. About what I expected from the stats and pictures presented. All in all, it's not my preferred style of sword, but it feels good in motion so I am pleased with how it moved. Mine balances at around 4 inches above the guard so it is balanced around where I am happy. The harmonics on the sword however is an issue. The super heavy fittings throws things off...badly. There is a node right where your top hand usually is so hitting anything hard I suspect will be unpleasant. And the CoP at like 15 inches out. If the blade wasn't so damn beastly, this sword would be quite unpleasant to cut with...but against light targets, the blade presence just hides all these defects. I suspect this would stop being the case against heavier targets...which I haven't had a chance to try. The scabbard is serviceable...but that belt is not only ugly and anachronistic...it just doesn't work. It's a waste of leather. The fittings had some scuff marks from a pretty course polishing wheel...but at this price range...not that surprising. Everything was nice and solid. The plastic on the handle had some dye on it so I was worried that the dye would run...but it hasn't yet. Time will tell on that. It is a bit worrisome that they would put plastic wrap on wet dye if the dye does hold however.
The type XVIa on the other hand has much more reasonable fittings. They look nice and the small disk pommel feels better to me than the scent stopper of the saber. This one balanced 4.5 inches or so out and has a CoP around 22 inches out. The vibration node on this sword is significantly better with a vibration node right at the bottom of the cross. It doesn't cut nearly as well as the saber does however...even when you hit this thing at the CoP. The sword handles surprisingly close to my Albion Crecy actually and as such, I'm in love with how this sword handles as that Albion is my favorite sword by far. This could be my second. The plastic over this sword also had some dye on it...but nothing ran in first handling. Once again, somewhat worrisome if they are placing plastic on wet dye. However on neither sword is the smudge marks or missing area of dye. The "belt" that this one comes with is even more of a waste of leather than the saber...but a smidge bit less anachronistic. This one has a wood core scabbard which does hold the sword very snuggly. It is pretty simple, but it works well and this scabbard I actually like. The fittings are all nice and tight. The finish on this one had even more polishing scuffs than the saber and the inside of the wheel pommel wasn't even touched it seems. Once again, to be expected at this price range.
