Its late October. In the middle of the night, a noise wakes you up. You leave your bedroom and walk to your den/family living/TV room. You see nothing. You hear nothing. Then you turn toward the kitchen and see this: He is tall and big. He is wearing a mask, coveralls and work boots. He is holding the largest knife from your kitchen! He sees you and starts walking toward you! Behind you are the bedrooms of your family. It's up to you to stop him. No time to access any guns or dial 911. Time only to grab the weapon standing in the corner of the family room and defend yourself and your family. If you could have any sword or machete or edged weapon at that moment, which one and why?You may wish to play Halloween theme music below unless you are too scared.

Yes. Something with weight, two hand use and very sharp. I would choose my custom made "cleaver" katana. It has a wide (just under 2 inches), long (with 36 inches can still swing in house maybe), weighted, razor sharp blade with a two hand grip. Why? So I could keep his long arms with long knife, out of reach and be able to cut through thick coverall material. I may only get in one good swing, but I know if I swing it hard enough, he's going to lose something he needs to continue the attack....I hope.LOL!

A long blade might be problematic to swing indoor and I wouldnt trust thrusting in this situation. I'd also want a tough hard scabbard for parrying in the offhand. It's hard to decide between my Tac Kat (reach), my Banshee (long handle can give aditional reach too) and my Maintz gladius. All three might hew through arms, but the gladius has two edges and the tip is murderous. So I think I'd take the gladius.

Andi - Good point. Yes the blade length in the house concerns me. But, if I swing more horizontal and less vertical, I would have enough room in the larger space of the den for full power swings?
Love Roman swords. But, do you really feel confident taking on a Michael Myers type with a 20 inch blade and a single hand grip?

All in all, yes! The Gen2 Maintz blade is 21" long, has real cutting power and I think it could be more usefull in close distance. Tbh it was my first sword at all and I bought it with home defense in mind.

Cool. If your confident with it, more power to you. For me, I am only 6 foot tall (okay really 5 ft, 11 and 3/4 inches tall). So I am concerned about their arm reach while holding a 12 inch blade knife. I also want a blade heavy and sharp enough to cut through thick clothing and do enough damage to stop a large intruder.

I'm 194 cm, 6 ft ? inch, and have long arms. The Maintz isn't a historical repro but a powerfull short sword (and not really short).

Here is a pic of my Cold Steel gladius machete next to my two katanas. Got it for same reason as you, but not as confident with it as you are.LOL!

Markus - Actual your last response is the kind I was hoping to see! I was hoping for comments, explanations and friendly debate of, what would be an effective, edged weapon for in home defense, against a worse case intruder. Responses like yours and Andi's can only help us all.

Any weapon that I choose would have its cons as well as pros. My first thought would be spear, but I don’t feel comfortable with that without a knife of sorts. My war ax would also suffice. If I had my rathers, it would be my 26” bladed arming sword w/shield which may not be an option with your scenario, but on the other hand if I was concerned enough to investigate I wouldn’t be empty handed. My oxtail sword at about the same size as my arming sword would be a good candidate as its sharp as a razor, will give point, fast, and is short enough to be used in a confined area.
I know this is not what you are looking for but a flashlight, the more powerful the better. That will go a long ways tilting the odds in my favour. Put the beam in my adversary's eyes and with any of the above weapons save the spear it will be no contest. I keep one as such next to my bed.

May it be a supernatural creature or a psycho on adrenaline rush I wouldn't trust in fencing or wounding but in disarming, literally, rendering his (its?) hands or arms useless. Dual shorter hewing weapons with some weight behind the blade. I'd like to have 2 Maintz with bowlguards, muahaha - I'd be Mikey's nightmare... (See myself in the trial for slaughtering a good friend for a mistaken halloween joke) . . . (Edit: Note to myself: Try to avoid binge watching Ash vs. Evil Dead in the future!)

Trying to stop a charging boar with the spear would be a nice thing of gambling (another thing is spearing a hog that’s trapped by a pack of dogs) :) In the videos I’ve seen of boar hunting with spear the pig is doing his best to get away, not charging, and there is usually someone in the crowd with a firearm. However, if I was hunting pigs with a spear and got charged I would use the spear like pike, planting the butt in the ground under my foot.

I'm with Andi on this one, I'd grab my Mainz Gladius. Two reasons... One, the hallways in my house are very narrow and the gladius is the perfect length for those close quarters. Two, it's on the top of my rack, so it's the quickest to get to.

All my stuff is packed away, and my most accessible weapons are my Ronin Dojo Pro, due to just being in a sword box, and my Cold Steel Ti-Lite. So I suppose I would have to make due with my Dojo Pro, as my family would think it was psychotic if they even knew I had swords and such.
But if I had time to duct tape my bayonet to the end of a wooden broom, I would go with that maybe.
Not that a simple stab would do much. The guy seems pretty solid, so I don't think I could take him with any weapon I got

Echoing Pgandy, I would opt for my Hanwei oxtail.
Very fast, very sharp, with solid reliable construction and tough well-tempered steel. Traditional techniques include numerous applications at punching/grappling (and kitchen knife) range that would be appropriate in a confined space against a larger more powerful adversary.
As a bonus, it isn't very rare or expensive, so I could probably afford to replace it once it's seized by the police as evidence.

So, when I was a little kid and saw these types of movies for the first time(and believed that running into a Jason/Michael character was indeed a possibility) I dwelled on how to beat them. Since they keep coming back regardless of how many times you killed them, I found the best answer to be to dismember them, place the separate pieces into concrete and dispose of them far apart from the others(bury, drop in ocean, etc.) I figured that this should stop them, if not forever, then at least for the length of my lifetime. Another option I thought completely viable at the time was to be turned into the Terminator.
As to what I'd use(that is currently at my disposal and does not include being turned into the Terminator) would be one of my katanas. It's what I know how to use best, and the blades on my katanas are sharper than my Euros.
Terminator, though. Just sayin'.

So far.....
Markus - Cold Steel Viking Hand Axe with 30 inch handle. Blade - Custom large katana - changed to Dojo Pro O-katana Andi - Gen 2 Maintz Gladius (Roman Sword) Freq - "Jason" Machete Pgandy - Hanwei Oxtail Dao sword LeMal - Cold Steel Boar Spear Exeter - Maintz Gladius (Roman Sword) Djin - Ronin Katana Dojo Pro katana Pellius - Hanwei Oxtail Dao sword Adrian - katana
After review of everyone's answers so far, I am thinking I would choose something with a shorter blade and long handle. Maybe a standard blade length (27" to 29") katana such a Dojo Pro or Hanwei Wind and Thunder or Cheness Goza Cutter. Maybe an even short blade (24") but with a long handle like a ko katana or Chinese War Sword?

Sitting in the corner on my family room is a SKS rifle that uses 30rd Ak mags. Beside me is a Glock 17L. I would have to leave the room to get a sword or ax. In my house a gun is always near by.
