Imagine all your guns are in the attic. What edged weapon would you choose to go up against Michael Myers?

I've got a fern hook sitting around, I'd probably go that. The handle is long enough and has enough mass to hurt by itself, the blade is sharpened on both edges so plenty of options there. Has the added advantage that the hooked blade would fit right in with this situation...

Don't have an attic or basement.

I'm 6'5" myself, and not easily intimidated. It would honestly be Mr. Meyers' mistake to show up uninvited to my home. I live in Texas, and we have some pretty generous castle doctrine going on here.
I know I can't be the only one here who hasn't secretly wished for an opportunity to see exactly how good an analog for the human body tatami mats really are <wink>.
Because I am trying to be a good example for my children, I would give him an opportunity to surrender and wait for the police, but said surrender better be swift and unconditional. Fortunately for me, I have a rather open floor plan and vaulted ceilings. So, pretty much anything goes.
Which implement I would use is a tough decision. It would be hard to explain why I needed to hack this guy apart with a half-dozen different implements (the castle doctrine laws aren't quite that lenient). At this moment I would choose the opportunity to blood my Doge. I good sword deserves a good story.

Since my bedroom basically opens into my kitchen, I'd just jerk my old faithful Hanwei Cawood Viking off the wall and fillet the hell outta Mr. Hockey-face. ......Chris

Got out my Viking sword with 27 inch blade....no way would I go up against Michael Myers with a single handed sword or a sword with a short blade.....no way. My den has tall ceilings and is rather large, so my custom large katana would work in that room. It would also have the long "cleaver" blade cutting effect I would want. But it would be slow for follow up swings (5.8 pounds). Therefore, I am changing my choice to my Dojo Pro O-katana. It's blade is 33 inches long, which would keep Michaels arm reach plus foot long blade away and thicker than normal blade would add weight to the cut. But the sword is only 2.8 pounds, so follow-up swings would be faster. It has a 2 hand tsuka, so I could use both arms to power swing for the fences with that all important first strike. I would send it to Lone Wolf Forge to make it crazy razor sharp. Dojo Pro O-katana - top sword. Custom Large Katana - bottom sword.

In reality, it would be dependent to where I am. Next to bed is a KC tanto, in the kitchen a heavy vintage cleaver, next to couch my odachi (not ideal but better than no sword), above my tv storm bringer copy.
Now if I have to build an house defense sword, with crazy killer with little regards to his own safety in mind, it would be a kissaki moro ha zukuri (think of katana with false edge) with a 22 in blade. 9260 TH with a good spring temper, 9 inch handle with a steel kabutogane (old style pommel). Powerful enough to take out a limb but light enough to be used one handed (so I can pick up my bowl of extra spicy food of the day and throw that at his face). Fasle edge will be 8in long to make disarming hard and to make a last ditch recovery cut faster if I miss.

Oh oh oh I forgot! I own a vintage daidao! It is no where as big as the modern ones commonly found. 20 inch blade, 8in handle excluding the ring pommel. Can be used one or two handed, tip heavy but no overly so, the blade is softer than a katana but will hold the edge well enough for several good cut and won't snap as easy. And it looks mean as hell. All I need to do is to put on my USSR Afghan war hat/face mask and say "but I am your father luke"

In absolute hand to hand combat with a bigger and tougher opponent (who's also a murdering psychopath), I would have to summon every ounce of my training and will to take him down before he reaches my family. So I would use the weapon I know best; the weapon I've used the most; the weapon that I can quickly thrust under that mask: Yep, a banana.

Andi - Good point. Yes the blade length in the house concerns me. But, if I swing more horizontal and less vertical, I would have enough room in the larger space of the den for full power swings? Love Roman swords. But, do you really feel confident taking on a Michael Myers type with a 20 inch blade and a single hand grip? Chenese Ko Katana specialized cutter. Wider, heavier Waki length blade and two handed grip. Condor Dadao is powerful chopper, as well. If in hallway, would love Boar spear, Billhook , halberd, but they would have to already be in the hallway and you would need space behind you to pull the pole arms back (choke up) if needed.

CS Assegai short shaft spear. Can be used one or two handed, hard to grab, lots of leverage and control with two hands.

No, you put the banana skin on the floor and when Michael sees it and makes a sidestep the piano comes from above (after cutting the rope)

So no firearms, but traps are ok? Sharpened bamboo covered by a mat? Ninja assassin VS Michael???
I know the story is I need to protect my family.... I am single living on my own, if my GF is at the apartment, I won't have to get a sword, all I need to do is say the magic words "Dear, that tall weird dude just stepped on your iPad!", she will kill him

In this scenario I would actually prefer a blunt weapon. Something about the size, or a little bit shorter, than a baseball bat. Something like a mace, warhammer or a gunstock war club. If I am fighting for my life something like edge alignment may not be something I would be proficient at. But if it must be a bladed I would want my khukuri. Right now that would be a Chiruwa Ang Khola, but in the near future I plan to buy a long and slender Sirupati khukuri for the longer reach and lower weight.

Your pretty much describing the (now discontinued) Cold Steel Sword Breaker (Check it out on YouTube). For blades, a two handed dadao type chopper would give you easy alignment and hit decisively while not being so unwieldy in confined spaces.

Thought about everyone's choices (from an axe to a banana! ) and reasons, much more. To take on a huge insane intruder with heavy clothing and a butcher knife, indoors, I need a short heavy cleaver blade and a long handle. Therefore, I can change the length of the weapon reach from longer to shorter or vice versa, depending on striking space, by just changing my one or two hand grip. I have changed my final choice to the following: Zombie Tools, "Mack Daddy-O" 24 inch blade, 18 inch handle, total length 42 inches, 4 lbs 10 oz, mega full tang, 5160 spring steel. (Discontinued but will be on my search list now) See link below, of 2 year old Mack Daddy-O Review by another forum member (he has other sword videos and a very nice sword collection) P.S. Zombie Tools finally put a katana type handle on their Apokatana. Looks good.

Yup, your describing the design profile (short, heavy cleaver blade with long handle) pretty accurately. The specific example your showing ("Mack Daddy-O") may be a bit heavy for some at near 4 3/4lbs, at least in the ability to employ in follow up strikes and defensive maneuvers. Clearly, what that thing hits...it DESTROYS! For ease of purchase, price consideration, and being a wee bit lighter (speed, maneuverability), look at the Condor Dadao, some of the CS offerings in machete and sword (War sword), as well as similar to handed cleaver beasts.

If I hadn't sold it, my Kris Cutlery Korean Sword V. Super sharp, nice heft and a beautiful cutting profile. I have sold it though.
So if pick my Prussian M1873 Artillery Sabre. 29 inch blade, heavy balance, would wreck someone's day. I think I'd go for his hands or just beat the knife itself, rather than try to strike the body. Try to attack the wrists and neck maybe?
