Longsword of Danu. Typical long sword dimensions for this one. I combined moon motifs to pay ode to the Celtic Goddess Danu, and a leaf blade, which celts were known for, though not in longsword dimensions. Story: The Tuatha De Danann came to ireland in clouds in the sky some say. Others say they burned their boats on the shore when they arrived. They were the people of the Moon Goddess Danu, who led them to lands of enlightenment which was said to give them god like powers. Possessing technology that surpassed the locals, they crafted swords of superior build, with a pommel that was a homage to their guiding Goddess, Danu. The sword that their King, Nuada, possessed would glow in his hands when he pulled it from the scabbard. Their reign over Ireland continued for many years

So... I have basically zero artistic ability. In fact, all of you may become worse artists simply by looking at my drawing. But here goes... For your consideration: The Khophesser... "A kingdom to the south, ruled by a dynasty of Pharaohs stretching back millennia, is experiencing an era of peace. As such, warriors hardened by the unrelenting sun and battle have journeyed north in search of mercenary work. Their sword are the pinnacle of a design as old as warfare itself, morphed from a humble bronze scythe into a two-handed tempered steel weapon of war. Its curved blade well suited to their lightly armoured lifestyle, and their aggressive battlefield tactics. However, the laws and ways of the north have forced a change in design. The tang is sandwiched between two slabs of wood, as befits a mercenary, and a longer and asymmetrical crossguard affords the mercenaries better hand protection and options in the bind. The clamshell guard is influenced by other contemporary swords, and is plated with bronze or gold, depending on the wielder. Although rarely ornamented, the forte of the blade is marked with the number of lives it has claimed. " So yeah, it's a crudely drawn mashup of khopesh and messer. I envision it having a two-handed grip, but with scaled down proportions it could work as a one-hander. Additional details such as the tally marks and ridge can be seen once full screened and zoomed. Also, I'd like to redesign so that the point is clipped, like some falchions. The sheath would need to encase the blade, so that it needs to be unclasped and lifted out. Kind of like some Traditional Filipino Weapons' sheaths. I fully plan to refine and make adjustments, I just wanted to get the idea out.

I'll definitely try to design something. Nice contest! Just to be sure: There is no need for the 'sword-story', right? I'm not much of an artist...and even worse author ^^ Hope that does not ruin my chances I know the title says swords, but is it really limited to swords? Or other weapons would be fine too? Daggers ok??

I've got one I've wanted to do for a while: In my current D&D campaign, my Oathbreaker Paladin uses a winged greatsword adorned with a winged guard and eagle heads as the pommel. I think the design would also work well as a long sword. If people are interested, I can model this in Solidworks and provide more accurate scaling. I'm thinking the fittings could be a bronze/brass look, lightly weathered? (like the Atlantean sword, for instance.)

Well i'll start then. This is a sword design that I envision to be a light and fast one-handed cut and thrust sword that would be at home in the hands of an individual trained in the use of the saber, sidesword and even rapier. It has a single edged blade with a straight spine to aid in thrusting, and gentle increase in width at the COP for decisive cuts. A fuller helps to lighten the blade and ends just before the COP to prevent unnecessary friction in the cut. The forward swept quillons and knucklebow provide good hand protection, and encourage the use of point forward guard positions often seen in saber fencing. The grip is canted for a natural thrusting grip, and features a finger choil for the index finger, the feel of which should be reminiscent of "fingering the guard" for rapierists. It also aids in retention of the weapon during cutting motions. The sword ends off in a pommel shaped as a flattened sphere, decorated with writhen twists. Im thinking of a 35 inch blade length on this one I LIKE this design--a LOT!

I would very much like to see a good two-handed viking sword. It is a fantasy sword because, as far as we know, two-handed viking swords didn't exist. The backstory would be an alternate history where these massive swords were actually wielded by vikings in combat. This design has proven to be very popular, as can be seen by the number of beautiful examples of this sword type created by custom sword makers. Please forgive the crude drawing (I'm no artist), but this Microsoft Paint drawing captures the elements that I would like to see in this fantasy viking sword: This would be exceptionally cool as well.

Paladin Arming Sword total length: 40 in blade length: 33 in blade width at shoulder: 2 in cross section: diamond bright blue wrap with bronze fittings, milky white gemstones in top of grip Designed as a dependable arming sword for a paladin never without his shield with a wide enough blade to deliver strong cuts but a diamond cross section as to not sacrifice armor penetration. An all purpose arming sword for the never ending battle against evil.

 Demon Slayer Broadsword
total length: 36 in blade length: 25 in blade width at shoulder: 3 in Rugged BKS style wrap in blood red dyed leather and weathered finish. Bronze pommel and disk guard. Designed specifically with the demon slayer in mind. As demons rarely ever wear armor it is designed for deep brutal cuts with a broad heavy hexagonal cross section blade without armor penetration in mind. It is made to match blow for blow in an up close fight. Specialty grip lengthened for extra power in the cut or block.

 Trusty Longsword
type: XVIa overall length: 46 in blade length: 34 in blade width at shoulder: 2 in
All purpose longsword that compromises between cut and thrust to be ready for any opponent on the road. Designed for a true swordsman with scent stopper pommel and long grip to allow for proper technique. Most would need to sell their homes to afford this modest mastercraft but few would regret the decision.

Mercenaries Greatsword overall length: 60 in blade length: 45 in blade width after quillons: 1.8 in leather wrapping from guard to quillons flattened globes on guard tips similar to Ned Stark longsword guard. Bare bones and simple so it is cheap enough for a more common soldier. While not as long as some greatswords, the stout blade allows it to be a match for any opponent in the right hands. Designed not to look flashy but keep the wielder alive long enough to get paid.

So you may have seen my review of my actual real-life jian that I received recently. During the design process leading up to that, I drew up some designs. The smith stated that creating the fittings would be fairly exorbitant and not match my budget, especially since I wanted to focus more on amazing steel of the actual Damascus blade than the vanity of the fittings. That said, submitting my original designs for consideration. Please see the Tree Root Longevity Jian. My inspiration actually comes from a movie oddly enough. Donnie Yen starred in the Seven Swords. In it, he carried a jian that had a ball for the guard made out of dragons all curled around each other. It was hollow and a little bell would jingle around inside. While I'd pass on the bell, the idea of a ball seemed very unique to me as something not normally seen on a jian. Plus, it fit perfectly with the root motif I was aiming for. With that in mind, I drew up the attached. The color ones are the original fully fleshed idea. The roots make up a hollow ball; it might not come across in the drawing, but the guard would be more of a sphere, not just a flat oval. It would have to be hollow to keep weight down. I'd aim for relatively traditional jian proportions - - 39 to 40" overall length with a 32" blade length
- Balance point approximately 4" from the guard
- Overall weight without the sheath of no more than 2.3 lbs.
The other drawings are modified renditions of the guard, since a ball may not be feasible. But since this is a fantasy sword idea, I say it should be the ball-shaped guard or bust!

Ranger Arming Sword and Sword Breaker overall length: 40 in, 20 in blade length: 32 in, 14 in blade width at widest point: 2 in blade width at shoulder : 1 in, 1.8 in cord imprinted leather on each a matching set of weapons for a ranger or other fighters who primarily fight with a bow. Arming sword has a thin leaf blade with a thick center for adequate cuts and powerful thrusts, and a matching sword breaker to always gain the advantage in a fight. The sword breaker is single edged so it can still be used as a regular knife on top of having the sword breaker notches on the stronger, thicker blunt side.

Spent lunch at work doodling with paint. I'll get more up once the ideas hit me. Just to clarify Paul, do we need to have a write-up for each design?

I just thought i'd supplement my first submission with a 2 handed variant. This has much of the same properties as the first as it's designed to have massive cutting capability whilst still having swift handling properties and a deadly thrust. The general appearance has been kept similar with the one handed sword The finger choil has been removed for the 2 handed design but in keeping with the same design aesthetic, has been changed to a metal ferrule midway along the grip. I feel that a 36-38 inch blade would go well with this design. The long hilt will grant excellent leverage and help to make this sword a very nice handling weapon
