I'm not sure if this even fits the definition of sword, but here it is: The design logic behind this sword was to have the ideal sidearm for a man in armour to fight another similarly armoured warrior. The blade is a thick diamond section which has no edge but is wickedly pointed for slipping between the gaps of armour, through the links of chain and chillingly, through the visor of a helm. The crossguard is shaped as a warhammer for executing the mordschlag against an armoured foe. The grip is wire wrapped to help prevent damage to the hilt during such maneuvers and has brass ferrules for some visual appeal. The spiked pommel makes for a formidable close range option. A blade length of 34 to 36 inches would be ideal for such a weapon. This weapon was inspired by the axe/sword depicted in fiore dei liberi's treatise, fior di battaglia. Perhaps interestingly, the weapon in the treatise is more fantastical than the one pictured here! As for a backstory, i believe this wicked beast would be a good weapon in the hands of armoured bodyguards to a figure of some import. Or perhaps the sidearm of the big bad's right hand man

the feathered serpent what i think the Myan/Aztec empire could have come up with had they progressed beyond stone weapons meant to represent the god Quetzalcoatl, with the kris blade representing the serpent in flight accompanying story: whilst the lesser jaguar warriors wield metal or obsidian studded Macuahuitl those of the elite jaguar guard are presented with winged serpents the deadliest blade in our culture the long blade (long sword) with its serpent skin blade (dragon scale Damascus) is capable of delivering death to even the most resiliently armored warrior, its golden serpent wings (brass) are capable of ensnaring and breaking a lesser warriors blade whilst the golden serpent head provides the balance to the lashing tail allowing a skilled warrior to use it in a single hand or both hands to deliver crushing blows to their foes and delivering them up to Xolotl as gifts from his twin brother Quetzalcoatl the winged serpent additional note: handle wrap is snake scaled leather

Taken from: A History of the Atlan Continent, the Smallest of the Eight Continents Laying off the Northwest coast lies The Ice Isles, home to the fierce Icemen. The Icemen are seafarers and raidersof the West Coast of Atlan. Traveling in their Dragon Ships they plied the trade of piracy and pillaging for a thousand years. They were the monsters to every child's nightmare. They raided from Northland to Zumbra, terrorizing not only the coast but all the Kingdoms of the Inner Sea as well. Then 200 years ago, the seven Kingdoms of the Inner Sea banded together forming a trade and protection agreement called the "Iron Pact". According to the "pact" each nation was to contribute men arms and ships. They would then continue to maintain this fighting force of "Iron Men" to ensure the Icemen troubled them no longer. After 5 years of warfare the Icemen abandoned their raids on the Inner Sea Kingdoms allowing for great prosperity for all as the kingdoms. Now having a taste of the benefits of working together they continued to do so. Occasionally lone or small groups of raiding Icemen have sailed into or attempted to sail into the Inner Sea but all these raids were repulsed quickly. The opening to the Inner Sea commonly called the "Mouth" is comprised of two pennisulas 100' above the sealevel the north one heading toward the south and the southern one headed to the north. Between the two is only approximately 1000' to allow entry into the Inner Sea. Due to the narrow strait and protection on all sides all types of ships can be found on the Inner Sea that couldn't survive the open waters of the Outer Sea. On the southern peninsula 80 years ago a large statue to the then King of Luthia was erected in such a fashion that the right arm was actually a trebuchet and could throws stones or other missiles upon undesirable ships attempting to enter the Mouth. Due to a design flaw the arm would actually only throw a little over 1/2 the width of the Mouth. During a minor conflict Luthia hurled garbage and sludge from their sewers at a ship of Rusaka (The Kingdom the held the northern peninsula). Only a small amount of the sludge struck the Rusaka ship and their disagreement was resolved less than a year later. This act had two lasting effects, the first that slang terms were added to the common tongue to describe people from Luthia. The most polite term was "monkeys" while "shite flingers" was used in less cordial circumstances. The second lasting effect was that Kingdom of Ruska built its' own statue facing south. This statue was in the shape of a sailor with his pants down. It was contrived in such a fashion that a reservoir of oil was inside the statue that could be forced out under pressure and be lite on fire. This defense also would only be good for slightly over 1/2 the distance of the "Mouth" but between the two it worked as quite a deterrent to raiders. Luthia now also had a slang term for their northern rivals, "pissers". The next excerpt is from: The Kingdoms of the Inner Sea Ruska is the Kingdom to the north just as you enter the "Mouth" . It's symbol is a Seawolf, a wolves head on a fish's body. Ruska is known for it's production and exporting of cattle, grain and a fine dark ale. Ruska also hosts the Merc Guild a placement service for sailors and soldiers looking for work. Due to the large number of unemployed sailors and soldiers the wearing of swords is confined only to the Ruska Guard while in the city. Ankalin famed for it's forest is the premier supplier of lumber and ships for the entire Inner Sea. Ankalin is the only Kingdom to have two major cities on the Coast of the Inner Sea, Bries and Nibus. The Forest River is actually a series of channels and locks used to float raw materials or goods down to the city of Bries. The river is off limits to northbound traffic and anyone headed north needs to take one of the Forest Roads which run parrallel to the Forest River. The individual lumberers hammer spikes into the logs with their personal sigil attached. The logs are collected sorted by size weight and wood type in Bries and payment is credited to the lumberers accounts. The sigil spikes are returned to the lumbermen by the "Woodsmen" a group a armed men paid to travel the Forest Roads repairing damage to the roads, channels and locks and looking for lumber poachers. The practice of removing sigil spikes and replacing with your own is currently very limited. Lumber poachers are shot on sight. The Woodsmen use a variety of swords, axes and bows. Arbor is a country rich in farmlands that produces much of the regions milk, cheese, fresh water fish and the best wines. Arbor is also known for producing some of the best fighting men. Several hundred years ago a Captain founded the famous Mercenary group, The Raptors. After several years of success he decided to create a sword that would be an identifying mark for his men and he came up with the "Bird of Prey" a single hand version and a longsword version were soon synonymous with the group. Eventually a shortsword/dagger version was added to the mix. Fifty years later the Raptors were killed to a man during the infamous "Deathwind Ambush" but the populartiy of the design never faded and became a symbol of pride for the Arboreans. Sandstrom has the only major road to the markets in the east, due to a mountain range, the "Great White Range". A narrow cleft in the range allows for a roadway for caravans traveling east or west. Silk, better spices and "exotic items of all kinds" travel to Sandstroms' docks and marketplaces. The wealthy of Sandstrom carry a particular type of small sword a "Rasper" named after its' designer but is more commonly referred to as a "Bugger". Yethan is the most famous country for steel in the known world. Yethan's mines produce the purest iron available anywhere, coupled with their strict regulations for the introduction of carbon and other secret ingredients when forging, they produce the finest swords in the world. In order to maintain their monopoly it is illegal to sell or trade steel bars or ingots. Smiths are allowed free design reign and can and will produce any sword imagined, for a price. Poor smiths have recently come across a loophole in the law. They can produce very crude weapons and sell them to foreign smiths, who buy them for the sole purpose of melting them down to forge their own swords out this superior steel. Yethan is also known for their shellfish and pearls. Zenthia produces some of the finest draft and riding horses. It also produces fruits grains and some lesser quality spices and wines. A historical note is that Zenthia was the first of the Inner Kingdoms to outlaw slavery. Within 50 years all the other kingdoms followed suite. Luthia raises some of it's own horses but mostly purchases its' stock from Zenthia. They are known for having trained the finest warhorses in the world. Not so well known is their very active acceptance of smugglers in the Port and Capitol City of Tashmia. A Typical Longsword of the Icemen:

Serpents Flamberge overall length: 45 in blade length: 33 in width at shoulder: 2.5 in Deep green wrap with brass fittings A flamberge sized for one or two handed use with an extended grip. Forged in secret for the Knight of serpents. Many have met their end on the battlefield assuming the sword is nothing more than a ornamental piece of art for a eccentric knight, but you must never forget the true power of a sword is in the ability of the wielder.

Bandits Reverse Falchion
overall length: 32 in blade length: 24 in width at shoulder: 2 in weathered finish blade blackened fittings this sword was clearly once a grand and proud war sword of a noble knight years ago. Now it is weathered and broken. A bandit who scavenged it after a large battle has made use of it by grinding the broken blade into a vicious reverse edged falchion. While it still maintains some of its former stature and elegance it is a constant reminder of the vicious cycle of time to its wielders victims
Love this one!

Ivan the Terrible had a secret order known as the Oprichniki that was responsible for suppressing groups that opposed him. They rode black horses and their garments which appeared black were actually stained a dark red by the blood of those they had slain. Within this order one man stood at minimum a meter taller than any man he met. Local story tellers had begun referring to him as Zver and often spoke of the enormous sword, Ubiytsa vskeh (slayer of all) that he wielded effortlessly. The most popular tale told of him was when he was ambushed while serving as personal guard to Ivan himself. Set upon by 60 men and with only 20 in the personal guard several turned to flee only to be immediately cut down. Zver calmly dismounted and shoved his way to the front of the small line that had formed in front of Ivan. He gave a quick smile then charged the group of 30 that stood in front of him. With his initial charge he speared three clean through with a thrust, withdrawing the sword with one hand he swung to his right decapitating two more. He released a might roar that echoed through the woods around them. Many were too in awe of his shear size or scared stiff to do anything but die where they stood. Ubiytsa vskeh sliced cleanly through armor and body parts alike. An enormous pile of bodies formed around Zver and when the fight was over he stood in a pool of blood that completely covered his boots. He reached down and cupped the blood in his hands as if he were washing with water than rubbed it on to the handle of the mighty Ubiytsa vskeh. This was a ritual he performed at the end of every battle in order to keep the handle of his sword a deep crimson. Ubiytsa vskeh:Blade length - 38 inches (96.5 cm) Blade width at base - 4 in (10.2 cm) Blade width after base - 2.5 in (6.4 cm) Deep fuller that runs 90% of blade length. Grip length - 14 inches (35.6cm) Grip material - Leather (if blood of those that oppose you is unavailable oxblood can be used as a substitute) Steel hexagon halfway through grip to help pull POB back towards grip. ![]() this is my dream sword thats been in my mind for awhile now Features 42" overall with a 32 " blade rigid blade for piercing armor bronze fittings with a dark patina flattened scent stopper pommel guard is 7 " and a half wide waisted grip covered with Earth green leather Backstory... An age ago the race of man ventured into the area which is now known as Stormwater. The lands there were rich and fertile from the many rivers that were fed from the glaciers and snowy peaks to the north. The crops they planted exploded with life like they had never seen before but little did they know that the land was a winter home of the giants. The giant-kin stood twice the height of the tallest of men and were quick to anger and when they returned were not welcoming to the new comers. Most often these disputes resulted in slaughter at the giants hand. Word of the giant attacks spread and it was agreed that the settlers would retreat and take refuge on the island within the loch to the south. For it was well known that giants did not like water and would not cross a body of water that their feet could not reach the bottom. The fact that the dense structure of their bodies did not allow for the abilty to swim or even keep themselves afloat made them suspicious of water. And so the men were safe on that island but it quickly became cramped and the food stores were dwindling. A group was sent north to negotiate with the giants for farm land and in return would aid the giants. At first the talks seemed to be pointless and the giants were becoming more and more hostile to the intruders. Then a giant named Krowg stepped forward and stood between the two races. He urged both sides to sit and listen to the other and there the seeds of peace were sown. Man and giant shared the lands and there grew a respect between them. The men taught the giant-kin agricultural knowledge and the giants returned this gift with the ways they knew as well as the game they hunted and oxen they were a shepherds too. Over the next years most giants would leave the land of stormwater and dwell beyond the west pass and there they built a town for their own kind and it was unanimously decided that Krowg would be their chief. He was respected on both sides ,even the nearby kings of men would seek his council. For four generations of men ,both races prospered and were at peace until the day that the king died. Now, among the giants they were those who preferred the old ways and those who felt it was wrong to turn away from their culture. And on the day of Krowgs death the talk of a revolt spread like fire. Wicked kings of other nearby realms heard of this and sought to use it use it to their advantage, promising the giants that they could have the whole of Stormwater to themselves again if they would ally with them to fight their enemies. The Giants agreed to this and allied to the fell men. And so began the war of giants. It was a short brutal war that nearly erased all of giant kind.Towns and villages of men were leveled ,and if any giant stood against the force their families were killed. Giant warfare under the command of the evil men was truly horrific. The smiths had forged great glaives and axes for them to weld in battle, blades that would cleave man and steed in half with a stroke. The followers of Krowg were not so grand in arms, many of them welded clubs and used atlatls to launch massive spears toward their enemies but they had the larger force and in time they would prove victorious. When it became clearer that the revolting giants could not win they abandoned the kings of men to flee far away. The war had ended and very few giant-kin returned to Stormwater. The majority of the followers of Krowg went to live in the south ,far away from where so much blood was spilled. Due to the decline of the giants force the northern mountains and forrest became more dangerous. The were-wolves and great ice serpents feared the giants but now since they were so few in number their fear began to wane and they began to creep ever southwards following the river lands into the village and farms. That was when the river-guard was formed, whose purpose it was to protect the territories from the wolves and serpents. They were a militia gathered from all the villages and towns in the realm, made up of farmers and craftsmen of all kinds. The ones who had knowledge of fighting and warfare taught the others. Axes were hafted and swords were forged. The first task was to build an outpost at the edge of the forrest which the were-wolves crept from. When the outpost was finished and fortified the guard then set to chop and burn down every tree within a certain radius of the fort so the ones on guard could watch the forrests edge from their towers and from then on the forrest was called " the moon woods",for they had created a large crescent shape on the forests edge. Fitting for those who dwelled there. The next task of the river guard was to protect the northern pass, this was the chief location of the ice serpents, a magical and ancient enemy that crawled into the green-lands on occasion and they were the utter most threat to the lands to the south. It was during this time, these early years of the river-guard that a sword came into their service. Some claim it was a gift from the gods.Other stories claimed that a smith of men forged it ,never the less this sword was said to be swift as hail fall and when it was swung in battle the blade crashed like thunder and flashed like the lightning of a summer storm. The wolves of the moon woods as well as the ice serpents came to fear it as much as they did the grand giants of old.Always passed down from the Chief of the River-guard to the next. The once bright bronze fittings have aged to a dark patina, the blade however is as sharp as the day it was born .When the sword passes to a new welder the words are spoken Born of ore. Raised in war. Lord of storms. In battle i sing. Swift death i bring. The serpents bane." To this day the serpents bane and the guard is all that protects the innocents from the dangers of the foul creatures beyond their border. Among those that are protected is the last family of giants left in the realm , simple farmers and herders of oxen that are said to be the direct bloodline to Krowg.

I wanted to set all my sword designs in the same fantasy world so, here goes, sorry for some double posting... THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR THE LIGHT 1) Serpent Sword Fantasy backstory: Only the greatest warriors from an age lost to time wielded this blade as reward for their service to the King of The Light, slaying the nightmarish creatures of the past. After many battles paid for in blood, one great warrior cut the wicked tongue of the Serpent and encased it within his sword (the Damascus waves). However that was then and this is now… Specs: 24 inch blade, 39 inches overall Notes: Irish ring pommel construction, cord wrapped hilt like the Hanwei Chinese Warlord Dadao, guard is writhen and protects hand (there are 4, yet 2d image shown is 2), blade has a Damascus wavy middle line like the “snake in the blade” of Viking swords, inspired by Japanese yari 2) Light’s Song Fantasy backstory: The sword of the King, infused with the blood of the slain Wicked from a war that ruptured the world into 2: The Light & The Wicked. The Light fight for hope, for justice and to see the sun rise another day, forever clashing metal with The Wicked, who revel in the thought that the world will be consumed by Jormungandr, the World Serpent and that darkness once again reigns supreme. Specs: 36 inch blade, 47 inches overall Notes: Peened pommel, red is a fuller, yellow extension is additional material strengthening base of the blade, leather cord two coloured grip, sun engraving on the pommel 3) Dragonknight’s Sword Fantasy Backstory: Before the Serpent devoured the forces of good, Dragons roamed this world, and with them, their riders in shining armour. The heavy reinforced ends of their huge swords were specially designed for chopping the colossal coiling necks they encountered in the sky. Specs: 35 inch blade, 50 inches overall Notes: Spacer on the hilt, inspired by naginata 4) Hydra’s Tail Fantasy Backstory: If the Dragonknights thought it was their duty to sever the necks of the Serpent, The Light are now adamant that the Hydra’s Tail sword has God-given ability to cut The Wicked down until they fall or run with their tails between their legs. Specs: 26 inch blade, 31 inches overall Notes: red coloured titanium ball that stops hand moving back and provides enough weight to balance sword, the concept was a heavy duty fantasy pirate cutlass haha 5) Sword of The Light Fantasy Backstory: “A sword forged from light as seen from the bright wavy hamon on this blade.” (no depicted in the pic above) Specs: 29 inch blade, 37 inches overall Notes: guard envelops hand, curved chinese dao/katana type blade 6) Dawnbringer Fantasy Backstory: The ritual sword of the King of The Light. Named “Dawnbringer” for its ability to vanquish evil and restore light (good/truth) once again. Specs: 33 inch blade, 44 inches overall 7) Sword in Stasis Fantasy Backstory: “Stasis” meaning stillness or equilibrium is exactly what The Light stand for. The most common sword used by the soldier of The Light against their eternal battle with The Wicked. Specs: 32 inch blade, 39 inches overall Notes: either side of the sword can be used, upward curving handle provides a firm grip that pushes through with slicing or gives space for recoil when hacking, spiked pommel is deadly BELOW ARE THE SWORDS OF THE WICKED:

THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR THE WICKED 1) Jormungandr Fantasy backstory: These legendary swords are said to echo the sting of Jormungandr. Only 100 of them were forged in the unearthly fires of the Serpent’s belly, weapons for The Wicked that even The Light will perish against. Specs: 25 inch blade, 32 inches overall Notes: S-shaped guard, peened pommel, lahot style blade in falchion clothing 2) Vehement Blade Fantasy backstory: The obsidian shard that forms the pommel of this sword is said to darken as the day when the The Light and The Wicked clash nears. The poisoned tip of this metal ensures lethality in every strike. Yet, there can only be one victor… Specs: 17 inch blade, 23 inches overall Notes: Obsidian black hexagonal pommel, wooden hilt with carved blocks for fingers to slot in for extra grip, iron ringed tsuba, spear-like blade, green reinforced tip 3) Trident Ninjato Fantasy Backstory: The sword that aided the Serpent in devouring the Dragons, trident design on this sword was to emphasise its ability to pierce through the thick scale and skin under a dragon’s chin. Specs: 30 inch blade, 41 inches overall Notes: Red rayskin panels, decided to ditch the rounded kissaki blade shape of a typical katanas for the one shown above because it looks more menacing 4) Dragon’s Breath Fantasy Backstory: Mystic fire has given the blade its colours. Once the prideful sword of the Dragonknight King, in the hands of the Wicked it is now a taunting memory of defeat. Specs: 28 inch blade, 40 inches overall Notes: Red coloured Damascus blade, brass pommel and guard, wooden grip, integrated and pinned tang, inspired by Viking Seax 5) Sword of The Wicked Fantasy Background: “The cloudy line hamon represents the darkness that shrouds the wielder of this blade.” (as seen in this blade) Specs: 29 inches, 37 inch overall Notes: The anti-version of the Sword of The Light. Grosse Messer type construction and blade. 6) Duskcaller Fantasy Backstory: The ceremonial sword of The Wicked when they offer sacrifices to Jormungandr. Named “Duskcaller” for its ability to strike down foes so that they never see light again. Specs: 33 inch blade, 44 inches overall 7) Sword of Scrol Fantasy Backstory: Scrol, the assassin. A name ushered only by the bravest of The Light and the darkest of The Wicked. Just speak his name and hush shall fall upon your foes. Specs: 19 inch blade, 27 inches overall AND THAT IS THE WORLD OF THE LIGHT & THE WICKED. THANKS FOR LOOKING

I would very much like to see a good two-handed viking sword. It is a fantasy sword because, as far as we know, two-handed viking swords didn't exist. This design has proven to be very popular, as can be seen by the number of beautiful examples of this sword type created by custom sword makers. Please forgive the crude drawing (I'm no artist), but this Microsoft Paint drawing captures the elements that I would like to see in this fantasy viking sword:
I took a photo of a normal viking sword blade and stretched it to the proportions of a two-handed sword. The blade length could be around 36 - 38 inches. I would personally like to see the grip length be around 9 inches. I have seen other designs for this type of sword where the grip was 10 or even 12 inches, which is a bit too long in my opinion. So, with a 36 to 38 inch blade, I would think the overall length of the sword would be somewhere between 48 to 50 inches. Perhaps we could call it a viking greatsword. I left the guard and pommel unadorned, which would look good in my opinion, or it could be further improved by adding engraving similar to period viking swords such as this dragon design from a sword found in Suontaka, Finland: The backstory for this fantasy viking sword could center around Surtr, a fire giant from Norse mythology who leads his kin into battle against the Aesir and Vanir gods during Ragnarok, the cyclical destruction of the cosmos. His particular destiny is to kill the god Freyr and to be slain by him in turn. He arrives from Muspelheim, the extreme southern region of heat and fire, bearing his weapon of choice of a burning sword, with which the world is razed before it sinks into the sea. Here is an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry for Surtr: "Surtr is mentioned twice in the poem Völuspá, where a völva divulges information to the god Odin. The völva says that, during Ragnarök, Surtr will come from the south with flames, carrying a very bright sword:
Old Norse:
Sutr ferr sunnan
með sviga lævi:
skinn af sverði
sól valtiva.
English:
Surtr moves from the south
with the scathe of branches:
there shines from his sword
the sun of Gods of the Slain.
Following this, the völva says that "stone peaks clash", "troll wives take to the road", "warriors tread the path from Hel", and the heavens "break apart". The next stanza relates that Odin is to be killed by the wolf Fenrir, and that Surtr will go to battle against "Beli's bane", a kenning for the god Freyr, who slew the giant Beli. No further detail is given about the fight between Surtr and Freyr in the poem. In the stanzas that follow, a number of gods and their opponents are described as doing battle at Ragnarök, and that the world will be consumed in flames, yet afterward a new world rises from the sea, fertile and teeming with life, and the surviving gods will meet again."
This huge viking sword could be a representation of the flaming sword of Surtr. The guard and pommel could be engraved with a dragon design as shown in the photo above, possibly also incorporating flames, as this is a typical representation of Ragnarok. So here is this sword again with a more red grip color and a metal spacer. ( I think it would look good with or without the metal spacer). We could call it the "Sword of Surtr". Or perhaps the "Flame of Surtr". From the proportions shown in these drawings, the base of the blade would be 2.75 inches wide. With a wide fuller extending nearly the length of the blade, this type X blade would be very impressive! And here is the "Flame of Surtr" with a bronze hilt that is engraved with the design from the original period viking sword: I could see myself buying something like this.

AMENTIAM Larachia was a small country, and often raided. Desperate to safeguard his people, King Sarchan commissioned a magic sword. The mage who delivered it said the sword's name was Amentiam, and warned the king to only use it in times of dire need.
When Larachia was invaded again, King Sarchan led his army into battle, but his army was outmached, and soon began to be overrun. King Sarchan drew Amentiam and spurred his horse into the fray. He was a terrifying sight to behold, moving with a speed and ferocity for beyond that of normal men, and the sword seem to guide him to his next enemy. The invading forces quailed and broke under his onslaught, and the cheering Larachians chased them from the field. Nobody noticed the glint in their king's eye as he sheathed his still bloody sword. Two weeks later, a peasant petitioned the king for lower taxes on the harvest. King Sarchan listened to his plea without a word, then suddenly he stood, drawing Amentiam, and thrust the sword through the peasant's heart. This time the king did not sheathe the sword, but laid it across his knees as he sat back on his throne. There were no more petitions that day. An aura of fear settled on the castle over the following days, and whispers began flitting across the castle, whispers of a demon sword and a mad king. One week after the peasant's murder, a duke confronted the king, who moved with terrible speed and beheaded the duke. This time, however, the king did not stop. The castle halls became bathed in blood as the mad king continued his rampage. That night, insane laughter could be heard echoing through the castle. The next morning the king brought his slaughter to the city. King Sarchan's frenzy continued for several days, but afterword travellers would say that they could still hear the screams echoing from the dead city as they told stories of a mad king and his dread sword. Centuries later, an archeologist dug in the dirt of some forgotten city in a small country. He sighed, wishing he was out looking for the ruins of Carthage or Troy, not stuck here- his thoughts were interrupted when he saw a strange handle protruding from the ground. He grasped it, and pulled._

Hello, newcomer here. Here are my entries. The lore is a bit long but I hope they're worth a read. I think you need to click on the image to see all the details, i really have no idea how to create these details or color them in Photoshop. P.S. I emailed the first sword (Juyo) to Paul because my account took 2 days to be authorized by the forum staff so if he's reading this he doesn't have to submit it on my behalf. P.P.S. My English isn't perfect as its my second language and i'm still learning. #1 Juyo - the Versatile Easy to wield, difficult to master, comfortable both in the hands of an amateur and in the hands of a master, and applicable to most if not all martial arts. These were the challenges given to the mage-smiths of the Aleutian Empire by its greatest swordsman and duelist, Mura the Swordsage. The challenge itself had another purpose; The Empire needed a signature weapon that could be used by all martial arts from the many provinces it had conquered. Hundreds of smiths proposed their design and thousands of blades were tested and found wanting. Still none had succeeded. Until finally one blade was chosen from a source no one had expected- a woman- and she wasn’t even a mage-smith nor was she a martial artist. Shaira the Traveller had met warriors from dozens of different cultures and perhaps hundreds of different martial arts in her journey. Though by no means a master in any form of martial arts, she had witnessed a common thread amongst these martial arts and had designed a blade in her spare time. This blade was later forged by an apprentice mage-smith instead of a master and submitted to the contest, never once expected to win. After the announcement, Shaira only requested 3 things as a reward; Citizenship in the Empire, Royalty from any swords produced and Mura’s hand in marriage. All three were granted. The sword was later given a name that could be easily pronounced in all languages; Juyo. (it is pronounced Iu-yōu in some dialects) Juyo entered the halls of legend a year and a day after it was forged. The Aleutian Empire was facing its first and thus far deadliest rebellion in its long history. The resource-rich island nations to the southeast declared sovereignty and called themselves the Kingdom of Colamandala. The rebels managed to push back the Aleutian forces and conquered three quarters of the southeastern islands and was in the process of besieging the fortress and trade city of Avolire. After months of war without progress, Colamandala had successfully gathered international support for its declaration of independence. However, the Aleutian Emperor would not displace his empire’s borders so easily. He proposed a treaty by duel of each nation’s best warriors. If Colamandala wins, they will have the entire island chain. If Aleutia wins, Colamandala only gets the three quarters they had successfully ‘retaken’ and has to pay for 70% all damages caused by the war. Swordsage Mura who wielded the Juyo battled the Colamandalan Kingdom’s champion Akassir who wielded a curved double-edged blade called the Castir in a duel beneath the city walls that lasted 16 hours. After the final hour, the exhausted Akassir dropped his blade and lost the duel. Though the duel ended without blood being spilt (a miracle in its own right) Akassir vowed to defeat Mura and to perfect his own swordsmanship before their fated rematch. The same Juyo blade that had carved a mark in history is currently in possession of the Deathless Witch, Akira Kosakami. How she had obtained it – and the fate of Mura himself – is a question only the gods and Akira herself could answer… Juyo weighs under 2 kilograms, fully fitted. The first Juyo that was forged had a 14-inch long handle with a 31-inch-long differentially hardened blade. The handle only had rayskin without a handle wrap. This was because the mage-smith who forged it forgot to buy the handle-wrap. The mass-produced Juyo blades will often copy the dimensions of the original or is altered according to the customer’s preference. The mass production version’s blade isn’t differentially hardened unless the customer wishes it to be (and pays extra). The sheath could either be wooden or leather, its blade design made both materials possible. The shape of the blade and generous length of the handle allowed numerous ways of holding it. In other words, applicable to all martial arts. It could be used for stabbing, slashing and chopping with equal ease and even a total amateur could wield the blade with some degree of success. Any owner of the blade can opt to switch its default cross-guard for a circular guard (ala Katana) or even a small (Jian-style) hand-guard with ease. The sketch above was drawn by an amateur and its handle size is not according to scale (I drew it).The Juyo blade drawn above is the one Mura used to defeat Akassir and is drawn with Akira’s permission. A foot soldier’s blade would have a thicker cross-guard made of iron and less ornate. An officer’s Juyo would have fittings made of brass or silver according to rank. A ceremonial Juyo would have fittings made of gold and would have many ornate engravings on the fittings and the blade. Pictures of Juyo swords with circular or square-shaped hand guards also exist. These are usually privately owned and modified according to the owner’s preference. Total length: around 47 inches variable (with sheath) Blade length: 31 inches Handle length: 14 inches P.S. Handle is wrapped in rayskin without cord. #2 Castir - The Beheader The desert regions further to the west of the Aleutian Empire and beyond the Aru Sea were the homelands of the Escian People. Unusual for a desert, these lands were fertile and rich with minerals, ripe for mining. By all rights, the Escians should have become a prosperous country, but that dream was long shattered by the Agrabinta Empire. The Agrabintas ruled over the Escians for over 300 years, imposing heavy tax and unreasonable laws upon its people, all in the name of mercantilism. Rebellions broke out frequently, sometimes decades apart. However, there was one common element shared in each rebellion; The Castir. The first Castir blades were invented before Escia had a name, when the deserts were still young and smaller than it is today. These early Castir blades were most often used on horseback, making full use of its long blade, curvature, and twin edges. These blades were worn on the waist with the outer curve facing downward. The edge facing the inner curvature is only sharpened around ¾ of the blade’s length (designer’s note: unokubi-zukuri katana style. Though similar to a real-life katana, the Castir was never meant for quick-drawing). This extra edge, which would not normally be sharpened in any other curved swords, is used to execute enemies of the Escians by slitting their throats while the edge facing outwards is used to behead. The Castir quickly became known as a brutal executioner’s weapon, thus earning its moniker, the Beheader. Early Castirs were made from folded steel and although examples of differentially hardened Castirs exist, they are rare and have only been in the ownership of wealthy or important individuals. One such individual is Akira Kosakami, who owns one of the earliest Castirs ever forged, made of folded steel using techniques both mundane and magical that is now lost to time. This blade is enhanced by some of the most powerful archmages in the world for a single purpose; to kill Akira. Suffice to say, that attempt had failed and the blade became a part of her collection. Modern day Castirs are forged using modern methods and materials without regard for tradition. So long as it looks and functions like a Castir, it’s a Castir. The Castir didn’t evolve much in its centuries of combat life. It is a perfect blade for use by the Escians thanks to their relatively level terrain and to make full use of their expertise in horseback warfare. The Castir also finds itself amongst foot soldiers just as often as cavalrymen, though the Castirs made for footsoldiers are often slightly shorter and thicker to make them easier to wield and tougher. An effective slashing and chopping weapon, Castirs reigned supreme in a time when iron and chainmail armor were relatively rare. Even when iron armor were more common Castirs simply became thicker and wider. Its wielders would slice at an armored opponent’s joints between the plates, where chainmail offers limited defense. A Castir was used by the Colamandalan blademaster Akassir during the Siege of Avolire. Akassir wielded his Castir against the legendary Swordsage Mura in their famous duel. Though Akassir lost, the defeat was not attributed to the blade, rather to the skill and stamina of their wielders. Mura’s victory was the result of his experience, not the quality of the blades. The presence of Castirs amongst the Colamandalan ranks suggest that Escia is actively involved in their rebellion against the Aleutians. The Castir pictured above is one of many swords owned by Akassir. He had requested the sword and fittings built according to his skills and preferences. It is 40 inches long. While sheathed, its length is 44 inches. The handle’s length is 12 inches while the blade from tip to base is 28 inches long. The blade weighs just over 1kg, fully fitted. The handle is wooden and wrapped in cord, sometimes also with rayskin. This particular blade had no rayskin on its handle nor was it differentially hardened. A Castir’s sheath is most often made of leather or wood, though leather sheaths are more common because it is cheaper to produce. Total length: around 44 inches variable (with sheath) 40 inches without sheath Blade length: 28 inches Handle length: 12 inches A more ornate Castir, this one is one of the earliest ever forged: Thanks for reading, I hope to come out with more blades and upload every week or so.
