An oooold but always funny question again: - Civilisation breakdown. - You already have your survival pack with knives, machete or axe, bow, gun (but not much ammo). - You can carry only another ca. 3-4 lb weight. - Which sword would you choose (and why)? My choice: Hanwei Tactical Katana A light TH kat (or messer), durable sandwich handle, easy to maintain, not too long, not too short, a weapon for the less skilled, I think.

Probably a gunto...say a 26 1/4 to 1/2 inch blade, slightly robust, heavy blade. WWII gunto furniture would be more damage resistant than a more tradition laquered wood saya. RinC (plus a spring steel machete, etc)

My choice: Hanwei Tactical Katana A light TH kat (or messer), durable sandwich handle, easy to maintain, not too long, not too short, a weapon for the less skilled, I think. :) Let's clarify... 1. For survival (actual survival) food, water, and purification tabs need to be in that bag (or the equivalent) because you can go weeks without substantial amounts of food but only days without water. 2. Let's assume your limiting to a 25lb pack. Unless your military most civilians can't move long distance with much more. 3. You can throw out an ax, hatchet or machete because most of what you would use them for you can do with a good knife and know how. Taping my Kabar to my pack straps was a good move. 4. A gun is heavy as is ammo, but a gun is the best deterrent and self defense tool. It can be in invaluable source of Getting food, but also keeping it. So I have 100 rounds in my go bag aside from the mag in my gun and the spare. Separate guns and ammo are in two separate bags. 5. I am assuming the worst which is moving out of a populated area after scavenging food at less likely looted stores. That being said a short waki size sword is the best bet when concerning indoors and out... Close quarters and distance. I have a custom version of a Wakizashi made for Kodachi Goshindo used for our Okuden Kata. Here is one owned by Tanabe Kaicho that was given to my Sensei that I had restored. 8in Tsuka from Fuchi to Kashira 20in blade. So it's overall length is about most blades Nagasa. Can work with one hand or two hand grips in a pinch. Can clear a tight apartment or be used in open ground. If your good enough there is no disadvantage if someone has a longer weapon. My version I am waiting for from Nihonzashi uses a Raptor Waki and had a navy Suede wrap, but similar specks. I would bring it for the simple fact that it's sharp (Nihonzashi is sharpening the blade), can last 500-1000 cuts before needing a resharpen, and does not run out of bullets. Attachments:

Yes, I considered the Hanwei Tac Wak (more a ko katana - hello howler! ( drink)) , but I don't have one and the Tac Kat isn't much longer.

Personally, I'm not very fond of the sword as an end-of-the-world weapon, being far more partial to a spear for versatility, simplicity, and relative lack of maintenance, but since it's only intended to be a sidearm, I'd pick the Hanwei Oxtail Dao: It's lightweight at under 2lbs, so it's not going to get in the way much; it's got 25" of blade, which I think is just about perfect for a so-called apocalyptic sword; the brass fittings won't rust, so it's pretty much maintenance free as long as you keep the blade rust and nick free; the hilt is long enough that I could squeeze two hands on it if necessary. I wouldn't mind having a full on bronze sword like the ones Neil Burridge makes, but that'd mean sacrificing too much blade length and I wouldn't fancy dealing with nicks in the edge after every strike against steel. I'm also of a mind with Richard for substituting the axe, hatchet, and machete for a good Kabar, but I'd also swap the bow for a quality, heavy-banded slingshot: it's much lighter and more compact (most can fit in your pants pocket) and it can fire just about anything you can fit in the pouch, whereas a bow is limited by draw weight and draw length the type of arrows it can reliably fire. Those two things would lighten your load considerably, making room for a good tarp, plenty of paracord, some emergency blankets, and spare clothes. Probably even extra ammunition for your gun (which should, ideally, be a lightweight rifle chambered 5.56, since it's more or less the lightest caliber you could reliably hunt medium-sized game with).

Zombie Tools Wak (Zakasushi). Multi use in my opinion and can be sharpened with a normal file. Would not worry about it much as it is constructed to take a beating. Handle could be used for blunt force trauma or even a hammer...lol Could puncture or cut without a problem. If I was living in semi or long-term place and had to locally fight, would pick something else.

i really want to say my Dragonspear, but its 4 lbs on its own so its probably not practical, i would go with my LD elven sword, feels the best to me, if i had to go more realistic i would go with my VA Monarch, but damn if theres a civilization breakdown u can be sure i'll be that one guy trying to save all my swords with like 6 sword bags over my shoulder getting murdered to be cannibalized or some bs like that lol

Need to define the scenario a little better:
If I'm at home and am not being forced out, I'd arm the neighbors and start a Watch. If I'm at home and forced to leave, I have two daughters (1 autistic) and my wife, I'd arm them with lighter weight swords. If I was by myself, the odds are I wouldn't be home and would have to utilize whats in the car so no sword or firearms.

Any "you're forced to leave your home and carry your own things including a sword" situation, like riots, zombies, broken down water/food supply, congested roads. If you are a perfect homesteader please imagine you'd be not! It's all about the one sword.

I would love to say a Bastard or Longsword, because of my experience with them, but after a while your arm is going to fail. I think a Gladius or something similar would be good, or maybe a long seax.

... only the long seaxes. Since you have already tools like knife, axe or machete, the fighting sword should be a bit longer and faster I think.

No one wants to lug around a giant war sword? C'mon!!!
J/K. Weight is a big concern so something multi-use. Sharpened trenching tool (shovel + axe ++). Or some kind of tactical machete.
You will want a longer but not too long blade that can be used as a weapon as well as everyday tool.
