Will there be a drinking contest too? Or eating contest? Or distance-peeing contest? Those are all fun as well

So, Mike, will you be entertaining other guests from the forum? (can i come?)
You guys both seem to have good attitudes, It sounds like you are both going to have a blast.
I gotta say Adam gets my vote. I think tsafa is underestimating you.
I hope you are planning to post videos. ;D

Yeah I voted for Adam too. I too think that Tsafa is underestimating him.

Too bad we don't have some sort of annual SBG meet kind of a thing. Then these things could be settled there amongst lots of other sword goings on rather than a couple of guys driving cross country to meet by themselves (well, and Mike). Oh, I see we have a poll going now. I think the winner (if there is one) is going to depend a lot on what sort of bouting is being done. I don't have a preference for who I would like to see win but I suspect that it may be Tsafa rather than Adam that is being underestimated. I'll cast my vote in his direction. No offense Adam. ps. If anyone wants to duel me they're going to have to drive down to Florida and get a hotel 'cause I'm not meeting them halfway

None taken.
I was thinking about Tsafa's proposal, and I disagree with it for the following reason:
In a real duel, you don't get 20 chances. If you don't adapt to your opponent well enough in the first fight - you don't get 19 more tries to learn about your opponent.
I think for the sake of the actual duel, only the first bout should count, and I feel the weapons used should be whatever the combatants choose - that way both combatants can go with their best, rather than matching one's preferred style to another's weakness: If Tsafa wants sword and shield, fine by me. I of course prefer longsword. The only controversy I see arising is what kind of armor should be assumed. I prefer blossfechten(unarmored) but I don't think Tsafa has done as much unarmored stuff. It will have to be worked out.
Of course I'm not against multiple bouts with differing circumstances for the experience - I would love the learning opportunity. But I don't think fighting someone 100 times with 5 different combinations of weapons and armor is really 'A duel'.

I sorta thought that was what you guys were talking about . The First bout to be the duel. Then after that you take advantage of a skilled sparring partner with a substantially different training background. Either way sounds like fun.
Tsafa, I in no way meant offense in my comments.

Unarmored is fine, but not naked. Medieval people typically wore 3 layers. That means slices are largely out. We would not feel them through any protective armor anyway and could not call them. We will have to calibrate the blows before the match so we are on the same page about how hard to hit. I am sure you have a fencing mask but your will have to rig some type of behind the head protection. Something as simple as strapping a plastic salad bowl to the back of the mask would be fine. I will have an extra gorget if you don't have one. You have to decide for yourself how much hand protection you will need. I will have two pairs of guantlets, a light plastic set which I plan to use and a steel set if you want it. The steel set is 3 lbs a piece. After the initial bout I would like to go through the rest of the bouting combinations as I described in my last post. I think the statistics will be very informative and will make the long trip worthwhile.

I agree that through multiple layers, slices aren't as effective as against open skin, but the fact remains that Slicing is specifically mentioned as one of only 3 ways to wound with the sword blade in the Liechtenauer system(the other two being thrusting and cutting of course).
While there, I'd like to do some sortof test to see how effective slicing is through multiple layers.
Those terms are agreeable, Tsafa. For clarification: Combatants are considered unarmored with the exception of shields. Any weapon wherein a reasonably safe and reasonably accurate simulator can be used is allowed.

All set then, we have terms.
All we need is to get the combatants to Texas. Lets set Aug 12 as the expected day of arrival.

Why don't you two just drop your drawers and see who has the biggest semprini already? This sounds like it will be interesting, wish I could be in on something like this, although I wonder how chinese sabre combat would work with a straight sword against WMA, hmmm.

If you come, I will fight with you. I'll use every fighting form I know and we can see how it turns out. It would give me a chance to learn something about chinese saber.
