I don't like padded weapons. They don't react like steel.
I like wooden weapons a little bit more, and use them as the standard in my sparring because they are indeed safer than steel. I have once in my life broken a bone sparring with wooden weapons. It was a finger, as you may recall. I would consider one accident out of hundreds of sparring matches a pretty good record.
ARMA guys spar with steel and nothing protective at all - not even gloves or masks.
Guy Windsor and his students spar with steel with padded chest protectors, thick gloves, fencing masks, and cups. I recall him writing somewhere that he's yet to have an injury at his school.
So as for safety and steel - it can and has been done. I would prefer to use steel as it is the most realistic(good steel sparring swords behave EXACTLY like the real deal) and I'm not too worried about permanent injury given the level of armor Tsafa is used to(I also have some armor and padding that I'd be using). Frankly anything - waster or boffer - will compromise technique. I'm used to wood - I have enough experience with it to still use it like I would a steel sword. In other words - I'm pretty good at not doing things just because wood allows it and still trying to do things that wood has more trouble with. it's an understanding that I have with the people that I train with.
I have little experience handling padded weapons. I've used them a bit before I got wooden wasters(and didn't like them too much), but they weren't RSW padded weapons either - RSW's may just blow my mind(i'm not exactly expecting it though).
Frankly the situation of the duel hasn't even been decided. I'd prefer it be blossfechten, i.e. combatants are considered unarmored. That being said, I'm under the impression that Tsafa is used to the situation being that combatants are considered to have gambesons and mail.
All things considered, I figure the easiest way to satisfy all fronts is to have multiple duels with differing levels of armor or weapons.
To be blatantly honest - I don't think you have to go all ape-loco on someone for it to be 'full contact'. Speed is relative, and with good timing and good technique even a slow swing or strike will hit. Relying on speed only gets you so far. And if you win because you're faster, then that's not a real victory because you're not actually better than the guy you beat - just faster - and you can't keep speed your whole life. You *can* keep technique with you until your dying day. Just my .02 on the idea of 'full speed/full contact' sparring.
We will see.
Rammstein - thank you for your zealous support, but it's really not necessary. At this point in the game talk does little.
