Thanks, the shark skin looks nice but more importantly, wears like iron. The belt and magazine pouch in the photo are twenty years old and still look new. Money well spent.

I assume you mean a Sig Sauer 229? What do you think of the .357sig round...? Any real advantages over a .40sw? It costs so much more and is harder to find... can't figure a use for it.

When both the .40S&W and the .357SIG were created there may have been some validity in the concept. However, there have been huge advances in ammunition design over the last decade, both in bullet design and propellants. All of the common service calibers are performing at about the same rate these days. Any difference is largely an academic exercise. They all seem to be succeeding, and failing, at about the same rate. Choosing a weapon you can control and shoot proficiently is far more important than bore size. For most people, a pistol chambered in 9mm that fits their hand well is probably the best choice.

Thanks! My Hi Power serves as a back up, in case both of my usual 1911s are down for maintenance. It's just a bit small for my big hands otherwise it might be higher on the list.

no I did mean a sig 239 look it up.I like the 357sig I wanted a hard hitter in a small package and that's what I got.most of the time I carry my delta I'm big fan of the 10mm to.I reload for range time and save the factory stuff for the street.I like some of the different cal that are out there. to each his own.I also now and then for open carry tote my S&W model 58 loaded with silver tips a true classic.crazywolf

10mm is lovely, wish it were a more available round - I don't think i've ever had the chance to shoot one. Might pick up a rock island or glock 20/29 for woodlands hiking.
pat, I have large hands myself but the browning just feels so good in hand. I love the 1911s but the round count always nagged at me a bit. The slim mags do carry a lot nicer though. I tried the 1911s in 9mm...just horrible  don't even know who thought that would be a good idea.

The first 9mm 1911 was the Colt Commander. After WWII the US started thinking about going to a 9mm handgun, as a way to standardize with the rest of the newly formed NATO. The Commander was the result and 9mm was its original chambering. The Govt. eventually passed on the concept as thousands of .45 cal. 1911s were in inventory, so Colt released it onto the commercial market. The only 1911s chambered in 9mm that I've seen run reliably only do so with ball ammo. If someone tells you theirs is good to go, they're probably a competition shooter who uses nothing but round nose ammo. Hollow points are very tricky given the overall length of the round, or lack thereof depending upon your point of view. I've never seen one run with any consistency with HP ammo.

Ah, never seen that one before... single stack mini pistol. Must be fairly rare... none of the gun stores around here have ever had one.

Interesting. I think something similar went on with the hi powers. The majority only feed ball ammo since there's a bulge in the feed ramp. The late model brownings are "modern" ramped and can handle the hollows and +p rounds.
Of note though, my cwp instructor just had to shoot the browning... and used his own +p ammo. Jammed exactly the same way consistently 80% of the time. Not sure if it was the recoil spring? but it fed the fmjs smooth as butter - Bought a new mecgar magazine that is supposed to feed at a higher angle so I'll go try out some hornady hps to see how it runs. I'm not going to buy +p rounds just to test them out :x
Hey wolf, I'm down in florida but will be rotating near ebensburg come june. would love to hit the range with you some time.

not military. Doing my med school rotations at the hospitals. I've got the 4" S&W500 - gotta start reloadin for the darn thing. (I swear i'm not compensating  ) I haven't even shot this one yet since the closest outdoor is 90 mins away. Bummer that you're so far away though - if I swing by that way I'll definitely drop you a line

The humped feed ramp was changed on the HP around 1980. It's been my experience the HP is one of the most reliable pistols extant. You may have need of a new recoil spring, or a new magazine. If your instructors rounds were handloads than all bets are off. An 18.5 pound recoil spring is best if +P rounds are to be used.

based on my serial#, it was made in 1990 and is a markIII variant.
It look like it fed well just stuck 2mm out of the chamber each time. I was thinking it was possible he hand loaded as well and was just off a bit  or else has been carrying around the same exact rounds for years while seating the bullets deeper and deeper. Of course if he double checks his loads with a glock factory barrel...
yup wolf, I sure love shooting larger calibers - but I prefer 9mm for SD. Shot a couple deagles (44 and 50ae) over the holidays. Very impressed, but man are they ugly.
anyone carry a double action only? my mk25 is dak only and absurdly reliable but i can't live without a safely

I have a Sig Sauer p226 MK25 as well, but mine is the traditional DA/SA... I love it. I also have a couple Sig P250's... I don't carry them often but I have before... they are DAO and no safety. they are not my favorite... prefer striker fired or SA but they have a very smooth DA pull. The only weapons I have that have a safety are my RI 1911 and my M&P Shield. I neither like nor dislike a safety... but the only time I would carry with one engaged would be if I carried my 1911 (which I never do) cocked and locked. I have never used the safety on my Shield, which is what I carry 90% of the time.

For the last seven years I was saddled with a Sig P226 DAK in .40 S&W. The DAK trigger made precise shooting more work than it should have been. Consequently, I was happy when we transitioned to a Glock 22.
