They are decently sharp, but they like to chop through targets rather than cut or slice. The way they are constructed makes them very durable and can take a real beating. They are however a bit on the heavy and clunky side, so they are more brutal choppers than fast elegant slicers.
I have handled 4 Zt blades so far ( apokatana, the duce, mack daddy-o, ferrous wolf)
The plus side of any swords with tactical construction is the durability and not having to worry about hilt parts coming loose overtime. the down side is that many of the swords are heavier than their historical counterparts.

The Apokatana would be my first choice from their line up, what can you say specifically about that particular piece?

from what I remember it had a thicker wider blade than a traditional katana, felt more ridged, and was felt about a pound or two heavier than my other traditional katana. I liked it, but I like heavier blades, also the handle near the bottom kinda fanned out a bit, curved and got a little thicker while most katana do the opposite and have a straight handle.
overall at just about $400 I think it is great for a full length tactical katana-ish sword.

Thx for the feedback. Guess now I have to decide what's in my best interests, a Ronin Pro-Katana or the Apokatana.

As an owner of about 14 ZT blades. I can assure you the apokatana is a great choice. Aesthetically and functionally it's not a "traditional" katana. But it is a legendary sword on it's own. Having the entire Daisho set with the tainto included, I can say it is somewhat better than most katana, wakizashi sets. Not sure if you have any ZT blades, but in terms of ergonomics and design... Nothing compares in my opinion. I have been a ZT wielder for such a long time, and even the so called "best" swords still.... Do not compare. Yes, the apokatana is a bit thick and heavy... But when you unbox it and feel it in your hand. It wont even matter. ZT blades are something else. Another kind of entity, if you will.

Pretty much what I was hoping to hear. At 6-2, 225 pounds I prefer a little heavier blade than normal. I currently don't own any blades but knives, but I have a friend who has a couple of the European style heavier swords. They felt good in my hand.

Ok... I see that you like the Zombie Tools... obviously, you own pretty much the whole line up. I was impressed with them enough to want at least two... the D-Captain and the Spit. However... I take issue with this statement... What ' so called "best" swords' have you handled to compare? Just as a measure... I have owned over 10 Albions, over 25 Atrims, 5 Tinkers, 10 Odinblades, 5 A&A Swords, 15 Valiant Armory, 10 Generation 2, 5 DSA, 10 Oni Forge/Kensei, 3 Dynasty Forge, 5 Kris Cutlery, I don't know how many Windlass and Hanwei, and a whole lot of Custom swords also. I've handled a whole bunch of swords beyond the ones I've owned as well. I recently had the chance to handle and cut with a few Zombie Tools... the D-Captain, Vakra, and Hellion. I was impressed with the quality of construction... the durable feel of the swords... and the D-Captain was much more 'handy' then I expected and I was impressed overall. That said... saying that the 'best' swords do not compare to the Zombie Tools is stretching it WAY beyond the realm of believability to me. They are well made here in America by passionate guys and I dig their aesthetic and and 'vibe'... but in terms of handling and blade performance they do not hold a candle to the higher end quality swords I've owned. Not even close. I'd be grateful if you would elaborate on why you make that statement and what it means to you.

That's great that you have owned and wielded so many swords. To answer your question: Of course there are better swords and knives than ZT could ever make. There is always going to be something better than the next item and so on and so forth. But to each their own. I personally think they are towards the top because they have got so much "personality." Their blades are just... Me. They suit my standards and I love the way they feel. Perhaps other blades can out "cut" ZT and what have you, but I've wielded many swords of the highest quality and still go back to Zombie Tools. Don't know why, call me crazy hahaha. Maybe I am a ZT fan boy. But through many tests and owning so many, I trust them with my life. I understand your statement as well when you say, "they do not hold a candle to the higher end quality swords"... Perhaps they don't, but then again you are probably more experienced with the know hows, construction and aesthetics of such swords. I put a lot of emphasis on martial arts and sticking with a company I can trust. Traditional and higher end swords are obviously amazing. But to reiterate... ZT is just me. The feel of the handles, the look, and the vibe. Out of all the aspects that pertain to swords, I've always wanted something that stood out in many forms. I think ZT is perfect for me.

I knew I should have bought the Phalanx. Hopefully I'll like one of the other new models better than this one. (Sorry - it just doesn't do it for me)

OOOOOO I like this way better than the phalanx sword. I would of liked a knuckle guard on it though....But that's just me. I wonder what other blade they are coming out with?

No, I agree, would have loved a Zombie Tools version of a Tsuba on this one.

Yeah and if he does sell it it goes to me!
What I'd like to see is a ZT take on the Gladius--that could be amazing.
