1 - R.Daneel Olivaw. Robot created by Isaac Asimov who appears in both his Robot and Foundation series. I love him for his role in the foundation series, but I can't really say anything as it spoils the his role in the Robot series. (Yes that's right, I am making sure I don't spoil a series published in the 50s. Go read some Asimov damit!)
2 - Delita Hyral. Counterpart to the main character of Final Fantasy Tactics. You play Ramza, youngest son of the most prestigious knightly family. He is your commoner best fried Delita is only accepted into the academy because of the last wish of your dying father. S*** goes down and after a massive civil war that has every single person on the continent scheming their own plans for advancement. He ends up becoming the king of it all by extreme Machiavellian manipulation, beating out all the church & most powerful nobles in the land. (And much like everyone else in FFT his story doesn't have a happy ending) To this day FF geeks continue to debate whether he was a tragic hero who prevented the country from destroying itself or a maniacal villian who got his just deserts for his selfish ambition. (I obviously think hero)
1 & 2 I am quite sure of their ranking, after that it just kind of goes into characters I really like.
3 - Zero Omega. A robot from the Mega Man series, of the ass kicking variety. Though they changed his sprite/art style to look like a girl when he got his own series he is still the archetype I envision when I think of kick ass action hero.

Hmm. That's a difficult question; I've seen and read so many series with enjoyable characters that it's difficult trying to pick just 2 or 3. In no particular order I'd pick...
Yoshina Ageha of Psyren (Manga): A 'professional' trouble buster (and high-school student) who'll take on any problem for 10,000¥ (currently 130.58$), be it finding lost cats & wallets or even beating up stalker ex-boyfriends. After finding out an estranged childhood friend is involved in what is believed to be a criminal organization responsible for the disappearance of hundreds and says "save me" right before disappearing into thin air, he takes it upon him to honor that request, no matter who or what might be involved.
Kelsier of Mistborn (Novel): A professional thief of great renown with the ambition to overthrow an empire in a combination plot of revenge, grand theft, and to realize a woman's dreams; the man's not entirely sane and fears enclosed spaces after spending everyday forced to crawl through narrow chasms to dig for gems with his bare hands just to survive. Nonetheless, he's a man with a clear and unbending vision with great skills only topped by his hatred of nobility; of his several (and very visible) shortcomings, it's one he doesn't necessarily consider a shortcoming and not without precedence.
Vin of Mistborn (Novel): A young woman who's experienced numerous beatings at the hands of her now missing brother, as well as the thieving crew she works with in order to survive, she's timid so as not to draw attention to herself, a lesson literally beaten into her by her brother, she nevertheless begins drawing attention by meddling with something she found natural to her, something she could always do, but didn't realize was something feared and whispered about. This leads to her being picked up and trained by Kelsier, which slowly breaks her out of her shell as she immerses herself fully in anything that interests her, leading to her becoming even more skilled than him.
Kaladin of The Way of Kings (Novel): A once great warrior of the short spear forced into becoming a slave after the incident that solidified his hatred of Light Eyes (nobility; he himself is a Dark Eyes, or a peasant) and forced into a hellish camp of hard labor as a bridgerunner, a member of a crew forced to haul a massive bridge across ground that has been spiderwebbed by deep chasms where vicious beasts dwell for the army to cross. As if that weren't bad enough, during the final sprint of their run, they often face hails of arrows from enemy soldiers. Despite that, he refuses to give up until he's beat down, briefly becoming little more than a drone without thought (he gets better).
Azoth/Kylar Stark of The Night Angel Trilogy (Novel): A little gutter rat with no parents who hates his life of being a Little (someone under 15) that is constantly tormented by Rat, a Big (someone over 15), who is also a malicious, psychopathic rapist that controls those in the guild with an iron fist (and other means). One day, while crawling under the floor of a bar for dropped coins to pay his dues (fees to essentially be allowed to keep living), he comes across Durzo Blint, the most feared wetboy in the nation, who threatens to kill him if he breaths a word of what happened (he'd just killed 4-5 men in quick succession after they failed to ambush him). Understandably, little Azoth idolizes Durzo for his strength, so he attempts to apprentice to the man. Durzo doesn't take apprentices, but after a little convincing, tells him that he'll take him if he kills Rat in 1 week. Mind, it's not as simple as all that, but he does it and becomes his apprentice under the name of Kylar Stern, a (fake) Baron, constantly living under the maxims that "Life is worthless; when we take life, we're not taking anything of worth." (It's a rather bleak novel.)
Honorable mentions: Heero Yuy of Gundam Wing & Setsuna F. Seiei of Gundam 00 (Anime): I mention these two together because they're rather similar; both are child soldiers trained to a very high level of skill, both are portrayed as being emotionless through the events that created them, but both are generally very kindhearted. Both go by code names. Both pilot giant mechs (Wing Gundam by Heero and Gundam Exia by Setsuna) with the ultimate goal of ending war, but both are considered terrorists (which they are, though not of the indiscriminate civilian killing kind). Both are also considered saviors of sorts by the end of their respective series, Setsuna a little more so since he undergoes rapid evolution, whereas Heero is a little more grounded, being considered such for his extraordinary deeds (Gundam Wing is also a little more grounded than most Gundam series).

1) The Dwarf (Tyrion or TyWin...?) Lannister in Game of Thrones. A very likeable and complex character, with an engaging backstory. He is the character I cared the most about in those books (which is weird to say, but still I think it shows the strenght of Martin's writing).
2) Harry Potter (gasp !). A conventionnal hero, but one with flaws and good values. Harry is loyal, altruist and courageous, but he can also show lots of rancor and be occasionnaly short-tempered. Although he isn't the most complex character around, I think he is one of the most well-known fantasy hero and it is good to see a popular fantasy hero that has good values, IMHO.
3) Colonel Pryce, in the Call of Duty : Modern Warfare serie. THe guy has little-to-no character development, but is pure suave british ass-kickin' all the time.
I'd give a dishonorable mention to Bella of the Twilight serie, for beeing such an empty, selfish, dependant, joyless, obsessive, disloyal, void, weak, sexist, psychologically-unappealing, one-dimensional, poor-excuse of a character that should make any moderate feminist want to unscrew Stephenie Meyer head's off ... Actually Feminists heavily criticised Meyer's books, hey I didn't know I had something in common with Feminists ....

Itto Ogami/Daigoro Ogami. Zatoichi. Conan. Eva Unit. 1 Roah. Kenshiro. Max Rockatanski. Jack Burton. Egg Shen. Snake Plissken. Tetsuo Shima. Pinhead. Harry D'Amour. Jubei Kibagami.
I don't know if you can use an object, but the Monster Truck from Rolling Vengeance is way up there.
There's more, but I figured this was probably enough for now.

Too many to count but heres the list in decending order
1. Guts from the anime Berserk, hes a huge musclebound sarcastic badass who killed 100 men in a row BY himself with his ginormous 2 handed sword, AND managed to escape Hell after killing a shitload of demons. Kinda reminds me of....myself <__<.....>___>....
2. Hajime Saitou, Anti hero from the Kenshin anime, hes cold, callous, ruthless, and loves nothing better than to achieve true justice, The death of all who are corrupt. AKU SOKU ZAN.
3. Conan the Barbarian, Needs no explanation except that i am NOT talking about Jason Momoa Conan hahhahhahahha
4. Alucard, From the Hellsing series, ultimate badass vampire, who can be blown into nothing but a puddle of blood and still respawn, his power appears to be infinite, and he carries two Hellsing Arms 454 Casull 1911, Longslides.
5. Teresa, from the Claymore series, shes a major badass with a sword and ranked #1 in her order. at 10% power she hands anyones ass to them on a silver platter

I always liked Raistlin Majere for his incredible drive to always get what he wanted no matter the cost (ok, he was an evil bastard towards the end but still) and Tasslehoff Burrfoot for always maintaining a ridiculously positive outlook no matter how bad the situation seemed to be.
just a couple favorites from the Dragonlance Chronicles for now
