While it may not be a classic, it is a fantasy sword. Going through some of Type Moon's Fate series made me think of one standout weapon in it. For an anime/visual novel sword that isn't a katana, it doesn't look THAT terrible, and with a bit of a rework it could be made into a more useful design, mostly in the handle. So here's Excalibur, from the Fate/ series. Except there's one problem. It's kept invisible most of the time. The viewer gets very short glimpses of it and when they do it has it's own problems. like the fact that the animators for it decided to make it look like a lightsaber. And the shots are either too far away, or too close to get a decent view of it But I found some official art for it, that actually looks like a sword. So I got to work. I kept the blade as it is, since it looked alright to me. Reminds me of a type XII or type XIII. All the work was on the handle. I cut the guard down by a lot while keeping the dark blue inlay. Gave the handle a better transition into the guard (didn't like the steep angle it had) and added two small risers at the top and bottem of the handle, and one in the center. Gave it an actual pommel instead of the gold cap it has, and threw on one of the blue sections at the base of the blade on it because I thought it would look nice. (don't look at the pommel too closely, I'm no good at this) Not that great compared to the other stuff on the thread, but I think it looks ok. Maybe someone else could do a better job at it

That's a pretty decent redesign, Vinland. I did a version myself some time ago, which you can see here, but I've never been overly fond of how the hilt came out since it didn't come out quite the way I'd planned. If I ever decide to take another crack at it, I may borrow some cues from your take, if that's fine with you. For what it's worth, though, the reason Excalibur glows like a lightsaber in the anime is because it's a holy sword that draws on the will and dreams of all warriors past, present, and future; it's also kept wrapped under Invisible Air most of the time because Excalibur, as Saber's Noble Phantasm, is a massive clue as to her true identity as King Arthur. Since a Servant's identity reveals all their strengths and weaknesses to their opponents, that's not exactly something you want to go bandying about and it took all of about a 10 second glimpse of its golden radiance for Lancer of Fate/Zero to figure out who he was fighting, so keeping it invisible is basically imperative for Saber. Especially since she doesn't have Avalon, its sheath, which renders her essentially immortal (remember, in Arthurian myth, it was the theft of Excalibur's sheath by Mordred that lead to Arthur's death, since as long as he had the sheath, he would not shed a drop of blood).

always wanted to see a proper copy of drizzt's scimitars from the dark elf books ones that match the original descriptions not the junk licensed copy's of them icing death " ...uncovering a gem-encrusted sword pommel, its black adamantite hilt masterfully sculpted into the likeness of the toothed maw of a hunting cat. " , twinkle " Twinkle had a star-cut azure sapphire on its pommel and when it detected danger nearby it softly glowed blue." cant see either of them in these talk about ripe for redesign hell these aren't even a scimitar shaped blade

And there is the problem, -
Twinkle "It was forged in the magic of the powers that all the surface elves hold dear," said Malchor. "Of the stars and the moon and the mysteries of their souls. You deserve it, Drizzt Do'Urden, and it will serve you well." ” — R.A. Salvatore, The Halfling's Gem
Twinkle was Drizzt Do'Urden's left-handed defensive scimitar forged by the elves of old -
This then should be an Elven blade
Icingdeath ...uncovering a gem-encrusted sword pommel, its black adamantite hilt masterfully sculpted into the likeness of the toothed maw of a hunting cat. ” — R.A. Salvatore, The Crystal Shard
The hilt of this scimitar was black adamantite and the blade was made of silver with a diamond edge. Its handle was shaped like the head of a hunting cat
So in my humble opinion Twinkle needs to be shorter than Icingdeath - as much as manufacturers would like to churn out identical blades that is then not true to the story

When Salvatore says "hilt", what does he actually mean - the guard or the pommel?
PS. Oh wait, I'll just assume he means the guard since he makes separate mention of the pommel.
PPS. No wait, that sentence makes no damn sense at all! A gem-encrusted pommel... the hilt of which is shaped like the "maw" of a large cat? What? It's been a long time since I read these books and I've only read them in Finnish, but seeing this bit of original English I think either Salvatore doesn't have a clue what any of those words actually mean, or his editor was simply asleep on the job.

I know about all the details of the weapon, I've read most of the stuff type moon has released, at least the stuff that has gotten an english translation. I just wanted my post to stay a bit more on topic and not fill it with paragraphs of explanations. Go ahead and use anything from my redesign that you like. Looking at yours makes me want to spend some more time on the pommel and add some more detail to it instead of just putting one blue diamond in the middle.

So, Icingdeath. From The Crystal Shard: My take is an actual scimitar, with a long, slender blade in the Persian style and a black all-metal hilt (adamantite is a sort of harder and stronger super-steel in D&D) inset with ten gemstones of various cuts and ending in a pommel in the shape of a great cat's head, inspired by several similarly themed swords once belonging to Tipu Sultan, "Tiger of Mysore".

That is truly a re-design if ever there was one! As much as this is more in keeping with a traditional scimitar, I have to say that it does nothing for me as an elf blade. Islamic/asian blades just put me off for some reason. I do like what you've done with the hilt and grip on this one, I forgot about the hunting cat aspect as described. The worst part for me, is that with this being such an iconic sword, it has somehow engraved itself into my head with images of the windlass pieces. I've thought more than once that my windlass raptor would make a nice start to a drizzt project blade, but that would obviously lead to having to get another sword to represent twinkle.

Different people, different tastes - personally, I just adore Persian shamshir, with their slender, sinuous lines and the characteristic, surprisingly complex curvature... I mean, if any sword can be called "sexy", these would be it for me. Of course, another failing of the Windlass replicas (and even the vast majority of official art!) is that Icingdeath and Twinkle are NOT supposed to be a matched pair but actually quite different swords, in form as well as function. Which might make your project that much easier - even in the fiction, Drizzt only gets Twinkle a good while later on, so going ahead with just Icingdeath for now would be totally canon!

Hadhafang was always my least favorite sword design from the LOTR movies. There's just something about it that looks... awkward, to me, something discordant about the shapes and proportions. It looks alright in motion and from a distance, but up close it just bothers me. I can see what they were going for, a sort of thorny branch kind of impression, but it just seems to me like they left the design a couple of rounds of revision short of finished, you know? Now, I'm not sure what the source for this is, but The One Wiki says it was inspired by cavalry sabers, shashka and that sort of things, so I thought - why not make that more obvious? Make it a proper cavalry saber. Give it some oomph - some more reach for mounted work, and some real dedicated cutting power to make it worthy of its name: "Throng-Cleaver". And so I did. Mine is an even 100cm long overall, with an 82cm blade just about two inches longer than the official prop. I spent quite a bit of time getting the curve right, closely inspired by stuff like the 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Saber and especially the Indo-Persian swords that one took clues from. It turns out to have quite the interesting optical effect - the blade starts out 4cm wide at the shoulders and actually tapers steadily down to 2.7cm before the point, but at least to my eye, even knowing that full well, it almost looks as if it gets wider towards the point... There's a narrow fuller, 8mm wide, that gradually fades out as the blade grows thinner, finally disappearing just about two thirds down the blade, just past the most pronounced curvature. The hilt is mostly wood, capped with simple steel plates at the guard and pommel. The grip area is bordered by roped gold bands and features floral inlays in gold and silver. The inscription inlaid in gold along the fuller reads, starting from the hilt, + AEN + ESTAR + HADHAFANG + I + CHATHOL + HEN + THAND + AROD + DAN + I + THANG + AN + I + ARWEN +, much like the movie prop, meaning "This blade is called Hadhafang, a noble defense against the enemy throng for a noble lady" (I guess they just had to drop in that Elvish pun on Arwen's name). It's written in Cirth on my version because while the Tengwar do look really cool they were specifically meant to be written with quills and brushes, damnit, and the Cirth were designed to be engraved. (And while we're at it, my version was NOT made for Idril, Princess of Gondolin! There were plenty of kingdoms other than Gondolin, and swordsmiths elsewhere and at other times! Stop trying to make Middle-Earth seem so damn small, for Eru's sake! Hell, I'm gonna say it was made for Tauriel in the great halls of Mirkwood when Thranduil took her in, just to keep everything contained within the movie canon. )

I had to actually sign in to make a comment on this. I don't think there has ever been a sword that I have seen in all of my collecting that speaks to me as much as that Icingdeath and now hadhafang. You do fantastic redesigns and original pieces.
