Someone should do a good looking Sword of Shannara. The one on the cover of the book is rediculous.

Remember the Sword of Shannara looked like junk. The "gold" on it was paint that was peeling off. It wasn't really a very good sword, in and of itself. It was its power that made it so dangerous. Still would if it existed today.

I've been in a Harry Potter mood for a while, so I took a shot at the Sword of Gryffindor: (Full size for better detail.) I wanted to keep the fraternity-type look and it has essentially the same size and proportions as the movie sword, so it's still a pretty small sword. This made sense to me because 1) goblins made it, 2) wizards generally aren't very brawny and 3) it can apparently be used by any worthy Gryffindor regardless of age, meaning its wielder may be as young as 11. Still, I like to think I made it slightly more serious looking. I based the hilt design on this silver-inlaid sword found in a Finnish grave, estimated to be from ca 1200:

Anders, that picture is insane.. I thought Saracen/Islamic inlay blades were the tops in that style of inlay... Holy schnikes.

Damn, I just read through this thread and what a great amount of fun designs. I mean really, you guys have made me drool almost as much as if I were in house full of tequila and a certain ethnicity of professional ladies. Almost.
One post in particular caught my eye....
Mok, what design engine are you using for your designs now? I'd like to a least tinker with the idea and see what I can come with from a functional aspect. I could draw it out, which is how I would normally do it, but the designs you fellas have done are awesome and I'd like to give it a go.

Overall Length: 51" Blade Length: 38" Blade Width: 2 3/4" @ base; 2 1/16" @ profile taper (3 5/8" from tip) Grip Length: 9 7/8" Guard Width: 4" Pommel Length: 2 1/4" (2 1/8" wide) So, for whatever reason, I decided to do a semi-realistic Buster Sword the other day. It didn't come out like I'd hoped, but maybe someone will like it. If you're interested in it beyond the specs, you can, of course, find it posted in my design thread; frankly, though, there's nothing more said there that's worth bothering over.

Looks a lot like a longer, slimmer Stigand, don't it? Or Lance's Deva Slayer!

I actually just took the blade from Stigandr and slimmed it down quite a bit, so that's not too far fetched. But you're right, it does resemble Lance's Deva Slayer somewhat, which is weird, because I don't think I've actually looked at that sword in a good 6-7 months. Especially since I actually just picked the grip color at random; the original Buster Sword's grip is red, but since I'd already done two red gripped swords in the past week, I just grabbed something I'd never used. Odd how that happened.

This was probably one of the best reads I've had on here in a while. I'll try my hand at re-doing Dar's scimitar from the beastmaster flick in the 80's. I'll try to find a copy to watch again, and i'll post up some pics of my scimitar redesign, as well as the axe thing that the Jun leader used. In the meantime, there are still a few that i'm surprised haven't been mentioned yet. Keep em comin guys, this really was entertaining to read through.

There was talk somewhere at some point about people's conception of Lord of the Rings before the movies came along, and several posters noted that they had imagined Sting as a literal knife, single edged and all. And I've been thinking of seaxes lately, so hey! Rosewood burl handle and scabbard, with gilded bolsters and peen block, and three gold spacers amid with two iron ones in the middle of the grip. It's not a historical seax in anything but overall proportions and the blade shape, but I felt it needed some Elven flare to better fit with Peter Lyon's gorgeous designs for the films, hence the additional hardware and shaped grip. The blade is 40cm long, 4cm wide and 8mm thick. The handle is 20cm long, enough for two hands if need be. I think it's just about the right size to be a large war knife for an elf, a mere pen knife for the trolls and a short sword for a hobbit. Oh, and of course it has that inlay or engraving on the blade, specifically the simpler form as seen in The Hobbit. PS. Oh yeah, the new forums don't yet play well with large pictures. Right-click and "View Image" (or whatever your browser calls it) to see the full pictures.

I'm gonna necro this thread to show off a thing I did recently. Y'all remember I redesigned the horrible sword from the (then) new Conan film, upthread? Well, I was never entirely happy with it, I thought it should have some more flair and bear more resemblance to the real movie version. I just didn't have much of an idea of how to go about it. But now I do! So here you go, the Conan 3D sword re-redesigned. :) This time I tried to incorporate most of the design elements from the movie version, just in more elegant and proportionate forms. The blade is still a very broad, lenticular cutting blade with a long fuller and flares out even further near the hilt, but the lines are far subtler than the awkward looking waisted leaf shape from the movie. The guard is asymmetric hexagonal in cross-section, approximately similar to the movie version, but significantly slimmer and less blocky and tapers in both height and thickness towards the sharply curved ends; it also features a triangular leather "rain guard" with riveted metal decorations instead of that unsightly lump of metal. The grip is oval in cross-section and somewhat barrel shaped rather than round and straight, with four metal spacers as a nod to the movie version's stacked wood-and-bronze thingie. The cocked hat pommel eschews the sculpted detail of the movie prop but retains the overall shape, and I'm honestly really happy with its lines and proportions. Aside from the blade, guard and rivets, all the metal components are gilt (bronze or iron, whichever makes for better handling). In the movie he runs around with the bare sword tucked under his belt, but that just looks silly and not a little dangerous, both to the sword and its bearer - not to mention everyone and everything around him - so I threw in a scabbard and suspension system as well. The kinda sorta Cronk Moar style baldric is dyed differently than the grip and scabbard because I wanted to add a bit of color to the package and in the books Conan always seemed to like scarlet. The sword is 110cm long overall, with a blade 85cm long and 7.2cm wide at the guard, tapering down to 4cm at the point where the edges start to curve in towards the, well, point. The guard is 20.2cm long, tapering from 2cm high at the middle (hidden by the rain guard) to 0.8cm before the peaked finials, and half by coincidence the grip ended up the exact same length. The pommel is 8cm wide and 4.8cm tall. And for reference, here's the original:

That's freaking gorgeous, Mikko. It really looks like what that sword should have been, but then we'd be tearing our hair out over how such a beautiful sword could be in such a terrible movie.
For the record, though, I actually really liked your first attempt, too; it had the sort of fantasy viking flair that's really always been present in Conan, at least the movies.

Thank you! And yeah, you're not wrong... but of course there's room for many, MANY weapons and styles in the Hyborian Age - the stories draw historical inspiration from everything from Bronze Age Mesopotamia through Medieval France and the Golden Age of Piracy to the Wild West. This might be a modern Aquilonian blade rather than one from Cimmeria or ancient Valusia. (Just for some fanboy nitpicking: Jody Samson's beloved sword in CtB was not Atlantean, even assuming the corpse on the throne was King Kull - Howard's Atlanteans were a late stone age culture and simply didn't make such weapons .)

I forgot to mention that I really love the little details in the rain chape. I'm pretty sure I know how you did it, but it's still impressive, for all the little finagling I'm sure you had to do to get it looking so good.
I'm also really digging that baldric; if it weren't for the fact that I rarely design suspension systems for the majority of my swords, I'd definitely want to take a crack at rendering something like that. Once again, the little details just really make it pop, particularly the rings on the baldric, which, frankly, have me a bit stumped.

One popular suggestion for a redesign has been Dar's sword from Beastmaster, made by Vic Anselmo. For the longest time I just couldn't think of how to make it better, but here's a shot - not necessarily an improvement, but in any case a slightly different take. I keep hearing this sword described as a mix between a katana and a scimitar, but honestly it doesn't look very much like either, to me - actual scimitars look nothing like the classical Hollywood depiction, which is in fact indirectly based on European falchions and messers. So I semi-arbitrarily decided to aim for a more explicit fusion of messer and katana features for my version. The blade profile is very similar to the original, although I did even out the curve and (negative) taper a little to better suit my taste. There's also a similar partial back edge, but it extends about half again further up the blade than on the original. The blade is wedge-shaped in cross-section, with slightly convex flats and two fullers along the back, the broader one (8mm) terminating right before the false edge and the narrower one (4mm) reaching almost all the way to the clipped point; I was going for a sort of modified moroha kissaki zukuri impression with the combination of fullers and false edge. There's a habaki-like collar, both to include more explicitly Japanese features and as a nod to the short ricasso on the original. The guard takes some influences from Japanese tsuba as well as European saber guards, but plays fairly fast and loose with both. It's sandwiched between iron spacers, like seppa but riveted through the guard because this is a permanent assembly and I wouldn't want them to get loose. The hilt is otherwise almost pure messer, although the bolster and pommel cap of course bear obvious similarity in form and function to fuchi and kashira, and the rivets affixing the grip to the tang could be likened to the mekugi if one were feeling generous. I actually though of expanding one rivet plate on each side of the grip into a mini-sculpture, like menuki, but couldn't think of a suitable motif so left that out; if I were to ever have this made for real I'd absolutely want to include that feature. The tang is covered like on the Albion Knecht because it's more like the original, plus when I tried it with an exposed tang it just looked too much like a kitchen knife to me. I kept the measurements almost exactly the same, with very slight tweaks here and there: 108cm overall with an 82cm blade (80cm if you leave out the collar), 8mm thick and 4cm wide at the base and about 5cm at its widest right where the clipped point begins.
