Am I missing something? What's a hand-held ballista? Isn't that just a crossbow that wasn't meant to be a crossbow? Speaking of projectile weapons that could be made in this scenario though, Joerg from the Slingshot Channel has all kinds of ideas. His slingshots can shoot anything, and include inspired designs from crossbows to gattling guns.

hand held balistas can be found during the Italian renaissance, it's diffrent from a crossbow it how it gets its power which is torshion rather than spring. this alows power to be ajusted & alows more power in a smaller package. If you watch the video(s) we never had it any where near for power because when we made it, it was for a grade in class and it we did not want any serious injury to occure as we were fireing it on school grounds. the closest we ever put it to full power was aroung 75% which we don't have a video of but we put a pencil through a cardboard box and embeded it in to plywood about 1cm. in the videos it was around 25% to 35% power. and as for Joerg he would be an awsome person to be stuck with in that scenario, absolutly love his stuff. An i sopose if your stuck with a hold bunch of Irshmen sling shots would be realy effective. my Aunt's side of the family is Irish and they can hit a dime with one close to 50yards.

Ballistas would be very badly suited to this scenario, I should think. They take a lot of engineering, a lot of maintenance and a ready supply of spare parts, they're bulky to transport and slow to use. Historically they were mostly used in siege warfare, for obvious reasons.

Ah I get it! Very cool... How long does it take to load and fire?
Yeah, the only problem with slingshots would be finding or making all the rubber. All the rest is easy to construct. Of course, if you had Joerg there with you I'm sure you'd have enough rubber... lol.

It was not dificult to load at the power setting we had it at. less than a min. we tried to load and fire it under full torshion.... well we could not budge the string, deffinatly would need some sort of windlass or spaner for that.
around 2shots every 13 seconds if you focus and don't stumble.
