it CAN weaken it. and as for the short spears. great idea, but id want a sword as a backup.

Pretty much. And like you say, a spear can also be a formidable weapon on 1 vs. 1.
Now, if it HAD to be a sword like object, it would probably be something like a D guard bowie. With OP's limitations, I'd ask the machinists to simply make it out of one piece, including the D shaped guard. A bit more complicated, but it provides for better hand protection.

Well, I went a step fancier, though nothing you wouldn't find on simple military knives. I doodled around in Inkscape for about twenty minutes to produce this. Overall length 34.5 inches, with a 12 inch hilt on a 22.5 inch blade. The guard is a simple oval plate friction fit to the tang, the grips a sheath of hard molded rubber fixed with screws with a metal band in the middle for some extra strength and tactile feedback (and because it looks good), and the pommel a solid piece of steel suitable for smashing stuff screwed onto the end of the tang. The scabbard is a simple wooden box with sheet metal bands and chape featuring a total of six suspension rings. All the fittings are blackened steel. The blade has a full length Scandinavian ground main cutting edge and an American style "tanto" point with a somewhat steeper bevel for strength (who knows what you might end up trying to pry with it). A 12-inch section of the back is sharpened with a fairly obtuse edge for heavier tasks like splitting wood. The notch near the shoulder is caught by a simple retention spring in the scabbard. The center of balance should be at around five inches from the guard. A total of 13 individual components, not counting whatever suspension system you'd decide to use with it.

Damnit, I knew I forgot something! Well, just drill some holes in the blade and you can slot in your own.
More seriously, it's a mix of features from some Tibetan and Chinese swords, Kizlyar daggers and survival knives and Ka-Bar tactical "tanto", combined with the proportions of a Thai dha and a scabbard inspired by the Hanwei "Banshee".

These are all really poor materia selections for the scenario given.

Hey, can't blame me; I'm not a Final Fantasy fan. I'm just running with the joke.

OK, if we're going that route... Five feet overall length, full slab tang construction - as in, the blade fills the entire profile of the sword. The hilt is simply two hilt-shaped slabs of sheet metal sandwiched around the "tang" with four rivets, the grips bound with cord. Three connected slots; the choice of materia is left as an exercise for the reader.

Mok,
Your first design looks like a philipino Golok in many ways. I like it!

Huh. So it does, yeah. Blind random chance, as that was one of the few things I was not actually thinking about when I came up with the thing... Anyway, here's an alternate blade form, a spear-pointed blade with a false edge and a short saw-toothed section, in the style of some pioneer bayonets: Damnit, I so gotta get someone to make these... The initial line could also include a third model with a clipped point, kinda like a huge bowie knife or broken-back seax, for those who prefer their weapons extra pointy. Anybody interested in financing this?
