I haven't handled the enlisted version of the 1896, but the officers is disappointing. The blade is consistent with the 1882, but the balance on the 96 is downright "Germanic". Too forward for a french pallasch. Hilt is very fancy, but barely adequate for protection of the hand. Not an improvement over the 1882.

 sorry about my warped sense of humor, but this is the first thing I thought of when I saw you had all that in your bedroom:

Actually, I believe Dave told me recently (while I was pawing his collection) that he has accumulated it in just the last few years. So for those discouraged by this veritable armoury of weapons and feeling like it is out of reach, you too could have a similar hoarde with just a little more addiction, obsession, and investment!

Incredible collection. I particularly like the Roman armor display. My compliments on not just the exquisite collection but the extremely tasteful and well thought display.
One question though?
How long does it take to dust all of that? ;-)

Glad you enjoyed the visit.
Dusting isn't too bad, but inspections and cleanings is about as bad as the good ole days when I owned A Vette, a TransAM and a Bronco...

Sword collection has been updated.
A 24 sword turnover in my collection doesn't seem to have the same aggregate effect as it would for a "normal" person; but it was still a lot. Sold off 11 and gained 13. Not what I intended.
Sell off wasn't really an effort to adjust the collection. Got broadsided with some major dental that required some cash. Turned out the dental office miscalculated my initial payment, grossly, I could have kept my swords and still paid them. Kinda pissed about that.
Consoled with some new Atrims, some really great French Cav stuff, Austrians, and a few buys aimed at the still half written attempt at a pipeback article.
2012 will be much quieter. Seriously. I mean it. There's no more room. "SIR. STEP AWAY FROM THE EBAY BUTTON"....

You can always move the books and use the space for more swords :-)

Frankly, if push came to shove, the swords would all be gone before a book got sold. There's a reason I'm a four eyed warrior...

Because you have four eyes and lots of swords? I kid, I kid. The vastness and variety of your collection never ceases to amaze, Dave.

I know I once said that in the past but that is one big evolving arsenal you got there Dave! Mind shedding some light on the Windlass 1793 Spanish sword and especially that 1890-95 Derue french sword?

Windlass re-released the Carlos III broadsword under the name "Spanish Bilbao" two years ago. I have been mesmerized by this sword for some reason and would love to own one. But the two examples I've seen sell for 2800 and 4500 respectively. The sword was anacronistic when issued to the Spainish cavalry and proved useless against the Napoleonic onslaught. The Windlass is a shadow of the original, sporting only a 33 inch diamond blade instead of th 36 inch hex blade of the real one. The real disappointment of this issue was a flawed production casting of the bell guard that resulted in misaligned matching to the hilt innards and a clanging rattle of the hilt to the blade. I put a leather bung between the blade and guard that did a pretty good job of deadenning the rattle. Satisfied me enough to keep the sword. But the run was declared a failure by Windass and was pull off the market after less than two years. The Derue was an experimental "T" shaped super fine bladed rapier for cavalry use. Everybody liked the hilt. Nobody like the uselessly thin skewer of a blade. It died and was replaced by the 1896 issue ( which was also a failure by the way). The 1854 heavy and the 1822 light were the two iconic swords of choice of the French Cavalry. The Derue hilt survived in service in the Chilean export which you and I have, and the Dutch Cavalry Sabers of the same period.

Dave, You just need to build revolving book racks on the wall so you can swivel them to display swords or books. There's your room!
Loving the new pieces sir. You have some damned fine tastes.

Thank you Dave, it is what I wanted to know. It is a shame that both swords, despite their beauty, were such a waste...

Been doing some "leveling". Traded off some things and filled the "spare" display with an intermediate assortment of 17-18th ish items.
The VA Templar and Gen2 Cursader have "come home".
Got CS and Windlass smallswords to anchor a "smallsword discussion piece".
Got another CS Shamshir. I keep recommending this to folks so I had to get one back.
My modern saber stuff I haven't sorted out yet.

Oh my. . . Holy . . . I'm floored. This collection is above reproach. I was also very happy to see a Moonbrand in there.
