The title says it all. We know about people's favorite swords, but what about the worst 'combat-ready' blades out there. Tell us about the worst sword you ever owned. ;D For me it was a Deepeeka Saxon Longsword (see below). The thing weighed about 6 lbs (even though it is supposed to weigh around 3). I managed to lay an edge on it and the very first time I cut a 2L water bottle, the blade took a set. The second cut broke the grip off. After I replaced the grip a few days later, another cutting session broke the pommel free of the tang thereby making it a total loss. Worst waste of money yet. I could have gotten better performance out of a United Cutlery LoTR sword...

Worst blade I ever bought was a knife and I don't believe it was heat treated at all, the point rolled on a simple thrust and I ended up selling it to someone who wanted it for an athame, the construction was solid and the handle beautifully carved but if the blade is bad then that reflects poorly on the whole thing.

Well, since I only own one sword at this time, and it's a pretty nice one, I will have to wait a while before I can contribute.

my worst real sword is actually not bad at all and is still in use by a friend of mine. it's a bastard sword by Silver Castle. it is made of D2 steel and therefor perhaps suspetable to chromium depletion failure which may cause it to snap without warning but since it is so thick I doubt this will be much of a problem. the real reason I would call it my worst is because it is way too heavy (over 4.5 pounds) for a sword with a 27 inch blade and the grip is round. my friend loves it for its weight and looks but doesn't use it much. it's really a pretty nice looking sword.

Quite a toss-up for me. I have two katana, one "damascus" that are pretty not great, but I wouldn't call them horrible. I bought them both years ago and at the time they were a fair offer, but nowadays they don't nearly stack up. Probably the sword I'm most disappointed with, though, is my older model William Marshall from Hanwei. Overweight, hollow pommel, poor balance, just a bear to handle. Manageable once the trick is found, but a sore arm is to be expected later.

the worst sword i ever bought was a cheapo katana from SMKW. it was 20 or so years ago and i ended up giving it away. i didn't want anyone to see it in my house. as for a godawful sword, i've got a pakistan claymore hidden in the closet that somebody gave to me. the kind with the statue of liberty head pommel. if i died, i would be ashamed for the coroner to see it.

The worst sword I ever had my hands on was a Highlander sword. Fortunately I didn't pay any money for this sword. It came sharp and has a plastic Tsuka and Tsuba. I ground the edge off of it and now it hangs on a wall (he he a wall hanger) in my boys room. They think it's cool!

The worst I have owned was a Philippines made Agincourt Sword. I found it used and the price was low....Anyways, the handle had a crack so I took it apart to make a new one and found a fairly thin tang on the blade side with a large threaded section welded on....The worst part though was a very deep grind mark into the base of the thin tang....I never did any cutting with it. The blade seemed un-tempered and bent when I did a flex test on it....Good thing I didn't pay much for it at least.

AAahhhhhh yeah me too, first ever blade I got was the Deepeeka Saxon and I antiqued the crap out of it the other month so I might have it as a silly display sword as a personal lesson on "No matter how legit you think something is you could be wrong"

BudK Not the Bud K Atlantean sword! Oh, that is awesome! Bud K products always seem to turn up in the hands of teenage boys and hanging over redneck mantles across America. There is nothing like a Civil War saber and Highlander katana crossed with a Rebel flag backdrop mounted over a transparent pirate skull blacklight on top of a remote control whoopie cushion for a living room center piece! I loved their catalogues back in the day. Ah, those were the days....definately brings back some memories.

Funnily enough, BudK got me "into" swords. When I wised up and discovered stainless wasn't good for swords ( ), I began to do some serious research. In fact, as a general thing, it got me into history and now I'm slowly studying to become a history teacher. Funny how that works. Real-sword wise, the worst I've ever owned was the Windlass "Classic Medieval Sword". The quillions were too wide (as seen in another thread), and it was quite tip-heavy. M.

Years ago, when I didn't know anything about swords, I bought a POS cavalry saber at a garage sale. I patiently sharpened it up, then one day took it with me when I went hunting with friends. At one point, my friends asked me to cut something with my sword, so I found a rotten tree that was barely standing, and proceeded to whack away I had everybody impressed as the tree broke and the friends not knowing better thought I was actually cutting down an 8 inch tree with my cavalry saber. Finally, the inevitable bad cut with the angle of the blade wrong, and the sword nearly wrapped around the tree, and everybody was laughing I was able to straighten the blade out again, then I hocked it at a pawn shop for a couple of bucks more than I paid for it I don't like cavalry sabers to this day, horrible balance, like swinging a sofa, and the grip and basket are too small for my hands, and the basket chafes some skin off of my hands When I got my WWII Japanese Officers Katana, I could not believe the difference in the handling, and I now had a good sword. I am surprised how many people still like cavalry sabers, and maybe its just because they have never handled a Katana or a good Euro sword

The most godawful 'battle ready' sword I ever owned was the Windlass Crecy war sword. Oh, it looks pretty enough- but the locket for the scabbard didn't quite fit on the scabbard so there's about an inch from the lip of the locket to the neck of the scabbard (which is leather over wood core, but fits like it was made for a larger sword). The guard must not have been a good fit initially so someone cut it to accept the wider sword blade- I suspect the guard itself might be hollow, it has an awful 'cast' look to it. The pommel screws off to reveal a hidden nut used to tighten the handle assembly. I did take it apart and it is as underwhelming in its component pieces as it is fully assembled.
With a PoB of 7.75" out, it is 45" of straight CRAP. I never bothered sharpening it as I bought it secondhand from a guy who was dealing in Windlass/MRL and DSA seconds...that's what I get. Like I'm fond of saying, you get what you pay for. I think I paid $100 including shipping and I feel I was robbed.

Haha, the worst I ever owned was a well-intentioned gift from my stepdad. It's actually a three sword set. The blades are potmetal, not even stainless, and have nearly 1/8" worth of 'edge' on them. There was no attempt to get geometry correct; they look like big butter knives. There's no habaki, the tsuba are gold-plated plastic, they had chains instead of sageo and were covered in...from plastic kashira to the end of the saya...faux pink snakeskin. Yep, you read that right. They are of course rat tail and the saya and tsuka are plastic as well. Though the thought does count, they are really quite hideous. They have been relegated to the farthest corner of my closet. While it was a nice sentiment...I just can't bring to stick them on my sword rack along with my Nihonto, Bugei, et al. The worst part? My fiance received the same set in green cloth instead of the faux snakeskin for Christmas from my mother. So now there's six of those things sitting in the back of our closet.
Oh well. It's the thought that counts.

LOL @ Midori
Brought to mind the 'Crusader Sword' my parents got me last Christmas. It is a wallhanger, no mistaking it, with a plastic feeling guard and pommel and a heavy, heavy blade. I wonder if it even HAS a tang but you know what? I like it better than that Crecy I have...and since my folks got it for me and have NO CLUE about swords, like you say- it is the thought that counts.
Nope, that Crecy is still the worst...because I had expectations of it that it could not meet. Hey, do you remember the QVC commercials selling those red, straight bladed katana for like $19.99? I have one- but it was the first SLO I'd ever bought and I didn't know any better. I think the Crecy smarts because I DO know better, but still trying to catch a deal and I got burned.
Such is life.

The only thing good about relatives buying swords for people like us is that that way they can't know what ridiculous amounts of money real swords can cost. And maybe that makes them thing we're more normal, in a way, instead of thinking us so strange. Maybe... ;D

A buddy of mine bought me a 'rapier' as a birthday gift once. I've seen others like it online for about $50. I thanked her, said I would find a use for it, and stuck it in the closet. I haven't spoken to her in about four years; I'm pretty sure she forgot about it. I know I did until this topic came up . If anyone wants to buy a 'rapier', never used, for $30 (covers the cost of shipping), contact me . --Edward
