hahaha funny stuff.
I have a similar story. The thing is, I just couldn't bring myself to tell the guy he bought a piece of crap for $799+tax (Atlanta Cutlery store in the mall - guy told him it's the Corvette of katanas-440 SS FTW). It was awkward not knowing how to respond when he asked excitedly: "so watcha think?"
and start swinging the *** around the room...
Told him I only know euros lol.

Worst blade I've ever owned is a Musashi tanto. The Habaki came loose so damn fast... I rolled the edge on a water bottle cap!!! Seriously?!?!?! A water bottle cap!!!

Back when I thought that the 50 dollar swords I bought from the guy at the fair, were "decent" swords that just needed an edge. I bought this one sword and treated it like gold for the longest of time, until last fall I bought my first REAL "battle ready" sword from DSA. I then stopped caring about those swords I bought over the years and even the one I treated like gold, I took apart and discovered the horrible truth. Its a POS! Here's what it looks like now!

That sucks about the tanto, I was cutting some bottles with my musashi bamboo yesterday and missed my cut, and smash the bottle cap hard, it was a nice clean cut with no damage to the blade lol.

Heh, I have one of those cheap ninja abominations as well. I think I spent $5 on it from a friend to try to break it, having snapped another friend's one( it broke just above the weld, where it looked like it had been hacksawed.) never did get mine to break. Worst "real" one I have is a bastard sword, it weighs some where between 6-10 lbs as best I can figure. The tang is welded about 3/4 down. And I have no idea what it is made from, the scratched off india stamp on the blade would sugest stainless, the black rusty spots say otherwise. No edge, which is good, else I would probably be missing an arm, but it is rather sturdy, as I have hit trees as hard as I could with it.Also have a low end masahiro, blade is fine, but the wrap on the grip came loose and the pommel *was* held on with hot glue.Nicked the blade trying to cut a turkey in half the other day.(had been in my freezer for like 3 years, and yes I let it thaw first.)

Worst one was a sword I bought off a guy on EBay. The guy kept telling me how great the katana was. Had bad pictures and could not make out the details. Low price - so I paid like 25 bucks. When it arrived, it was a stainless steel crap katana. Guy shipped it in a box with no padding or anything. Opened the box and walked over to the dumpster and got rid of it. Some German probably has it displayed at his house.

Probably the sword I'm most disappointed with, though, is my older model William Marshall from Hanwei. Overweight, hollow pommel, poor balance, just a bear to handle. Manageable once the trick is found, but a sore arm is to be expected later. I just simply can't understand that!!! That's probably one of the BEST swords I've ever had... It's excellently balanced, and does NOT feel heavy at all (well, maybe when swung a several times). Its cutting and thrusting abilities are awesome as well. Well, that's just my opinion, but I seriously like this one a lot!!! ;D I think Random had one of the first-gen Marshalls that came out; I believe they have since fixed the hollow pommel thing. As for balance and whatnot, only time'll tell- but if you love it, that's all that really matters. -Paladin

I've handled a couple of SLOs, but the worst sword I've ever owned is Adam Hsu jian. That sword is a pound lighter than typical cutting sword and feels more like a toy. It may be a suitable sword for beginning practice but the blade is so light it does not even feel like the real thing. Wooden beater is cheaper IMO. Even my cheaper $30 SLO jian (has carbon steel) feels more like a sword than that. Luckily at that time I bought it from KoA, so I immediately returned it once I handle with it. The sad thing about that sword is that it is advertised as "battle ready" which is far from the truth. More like 'wushu ready' (sad state of Chinese Martial arts ) In life threatening situation, I rather trust my life with a cheap edc knife rather than that wushu jian.

Hi all. I'm new here and out of appreciation for the reviews Paul did on youtube I decided to reinvigorate my interest in swords the history behind them.
I got a kick out of this thread and noticed no one as of last night had mentioned owning any of the "Toledo" offerings that have been around forever. The first SLO I owned was a Toledo Tizona del Cid. I was about 10 and pestered my dad and mom relentlessly until it happened. Man but I thought I was a walking world of hurt with that wall hanger POS. Welded rat tail tang. Crap blade likely made out of the fenders of old Citroen cars. Plastic grip. Knowing the heritage of the namesake of the Toledo swords they should really be ashamed. To their credit the current website says nothing about them being functional. It should disclaim function for the letter opener version as well however. I was given one of those as well. A manila envelope eventually defeated that.
The Cid disappeared during one of my many moves as did a Charles V also from Toledo. I don't miss either one.
Love the site, guys. I'm going to learn a lot.

Hmmm...worst sword ever?
Ah yes, that would be Anthros- sword of Earth. I don't even think it was that, but rather a knock off. Ugh! Thing had adjustable quillians. Little hinges on both sides of the guard. After that was a craptacular knock off of Glamdring. Nasty!

This is the first set I ever owned (mentioned it several pages back) budk.com/Swords/3-Piece-Red-Samurai-Sword-SetOr at least it's very similar to it. At the time, I knew -squat- about swords other than what end I wanted to be on. I believed very rightly all the samurai myths, save I never believed the whole "Cut through anything" katana myth. Physics do not work that way. I still remember the cheap chemical fibre ito, the non-existant same (I think it was just cloth under there), and the cloth encased saya. I remember it had very bad looking "shark teeth" looking hamon, and a blade packed in some kind of grease that smelled a lot like BBQ. Not kidding - even after I got rid of those things it still smelled like it down in my room for some time. Now the one I linked might not be exactly right, as it is listed as a "high carbon steel" and mine were 100% stainless. It even came sharp; I destroyed them by taking them to this old tree in the back yard, cutting limbs off and stuff. I think I was in middle school. Crap as it was, I loved it; it got me slowly "into" swords, though after they fell apart I got out of them until about high school. I'm weird like that. Oh, those were the days M.

The worst sword I ever had was a Kill Bill Replica Katana. The grip came loose after few weeks. Well, tried to fix it and it held for another two days. I tried some test-cutting with it and slipped, after that I noticed the first chips. That bothered me. Now I'd say the heat treatmetn or edge geometry was crap. But back then I didn't know that, fortunately there was a guy who bought it from me so I didn't have to throw it away. Well, after that I came to SBG and my first swords were a DSA Medieval Knight (whichs grip unfortunately cracked while sparring) and a VA Longsword.

Worst sword ever...
The Kokoro Ichi, project sword done by Brian Dreier.
In the beginning, the sword was inspiring. I used to look at it as a symbol that the little people, when in large numbers, can accomplish big things, with little effort.
Now,
It only reminds me of just how rotten we humans can be to one another. In the end, we can never truly trust anything... Not even our own judgment.

That whole project, which started out so inspiring, has been a epic let-down.

The worst functional sword I own would be my Musashi Kenshin Sakabato (The old ones with the leather handles and no fuller/bohi?). The leather wrap, though nice looking is lose and held on by glue. Funny, for how crappy it is, it actually has some really nice ray skin on it.
Other than that, probably my Ritter Steel "Celtic Norse" Sword. I actually like it. It was a gift for my 18th Birthday, but it simply isn't sharp or terribly well balanced. I've also owned a few rat tail tangs, and I still have most of them. One's a wall hanger, the rest sit in a closet.

I forgot to mention this... The first carbon steel sword i bought.... the Ultraviolet sword... Weights a ton, has a plastic pommel ( think about balance here ) and an handle wrapped in cheap synthetic leatherette, burnt marks on the blade and got chipped from barely touching the corner of a stainless steel table... Engravings are really cool.

Worst sword would have to be when a long time ago when I was 10 I hounded my parents non stop for a sword finally I got a replica of the harrypotter sword and after about 2 weeks I finally got it and I remember being disappointed mostly because the sword flexed and I thought swords were susposed to be rigid like a pocket knife or file but I still think it flexed too much it would bend to whatever side I was holding it on. Knife on the other hand would probably have to be a gerber assisted opening I sliced a water bottle with it and it wouldn't even close afterwords

Oh, lord, the horror of it all! My life was full of crapola swords....indian sabres with lion head pommels and blades of tin, a toledo broadsword that my brother bought for me in Spain when I was like 10 that broke in three pieces the first time I cut a cardboard box with it, the United Stainless Steel Katana that I used as a brushcutter in AK for years.... But the worst, by far, "battle ready" sword I've ever owned was from a semi reputable maker: CAS Iberia. It was their "Barbarian Sword," a rough knock off of the Conan Atlantean...Gods but that thing SUCKED! About eight or nine pounds, heavy brass cross with a hollow pommel and, honest to god I'm not kidding, a pressboard grip with thin leather washers disguising it. It balanced like a plow and was about as easy to swing. The secondary bevel along the edge was so abrupt it was more like a shelf. And I, young semprini that I was thought it was the coolest thing ever. Thought I was Hot Stuff.... (shudder)
