I am fresh to the world of swords. I have spent years training with other weapons and realized that the sword should never have left the modern battlefield. I have done some research and came up with these three swords for my first sword.
Gen 2's Roman Wasp Waisted Gladius-5160 Sring steel-$199 Cheness Cutlery Tenchi Wakizashi(bo-hi)-9260 Spring steel-$179 SBG Entry Level Custom Wakizashi(bo-hi)-T-10-$299
As you can see I am a short sword man. I'm only 5'6" so I work within my physical limitations. I have a love for the gladius style blade but wished it came with a blood groove. If you have any advise I would be greatful to hear it.
Oh, does anyone know were I can get a sword coated in the same stuff they coat tactical knives with?
Thank you for reading.

You could always split the diff and go with an SBG custom ko-katana, that way you combine the best of both worlds and it is has all the elements of a full sized sword for a shorter person

So that's what a ko-katana is...just a shorter sword?

A ko-katana has the same size blade as a wakizashi but the handle size of a full size katana.

basically although in the more technical sense a ko-katana blade runs somewhere between 22-25 inches, whereas a wakizashi is not as long as that, even if it is an O-wakizashi.

Got it. Baraka seems to want something even shorter tho...he mentioned the G2 Gladius which tops out at what, maybe 20" in blade length? That's pretty standard for most waki too, right?

I'm 5'2" and fence with swords that are in the 40" range. No problems there!

Personally, I would go with the Gladius but that's only because I'm not a big fan of Japanese swords.

Re: Cheness-- I've had no problems with Cheness' blades. I recommend the 9260 spring steel line, especially for someone starting out. If blade length is an issue, possibly consider their 9260 Oniyuri: shorter blade than their average katana, and a longer tsuka (handle) to allow for different types of grip. (I've written a review of the Oniyuri in the SBG reviews section; PM me if you want more info.)
Re: SBG-- However, having a custom SBG blade is cool: I have one of SBG's katana, and I can't complain. If Paul offers it, consider a ko-katana: Short blade, regular katana tsuka. The best of both worlds, plus with the colors and fittings *you* want.
I haven't used a gladius; I can't give an opinion on any, and unfortunately I don't have any info on tactical knife coating.

well if you love the Gladius and can afford to add $60 on top of your highest priced option you listed already then you should get the Valiant Armory Signature Line Actium. it has two fullers on each side of the blade (they realy are not blood grooves) and should be an excellent piece. here's a website with great pictures: www.christianfletcher.com/Christian_Fletcher/Actium.html

Even though I'm 5' 7", I prefer 27" to 28" blades, and I work well with them. I don't do so well with shorter blades.
Anyway, were it me, I'd go with either the SBG custom or the Valiant Gladius that Tom K. Mentioned. My reasons are that I love being able to have creative control over the blades I use, and Valiant has good quality blades. Just my $0.02.

Go with this. But, if it is a wakizashi you really want, you can get one a lot cheaper than Cheness or SBG "custom" models. Offering a choice of colors and so forth is all well and good but I don't personally care for any of them so I'd rather save by getting a cheaper blade that's par or better with the aforementioned and use the savings to spruce it up to my own liking, but that's just me. Then again, the only wakizashis I have are an antique and a Rawblade... (18" and 21" respectively if it matters; tsuka to be determined ) My next blades down are knives, and they top out at 14" or so. (get the actium) And don't worry about any sort of coating; if it's too shiny, hit it with sandpaper for a more satin finish; if you're worried about rust, coat it with oil. If you figure a black-or-whatever coating on a blade looks super wicked awesome...to each their own.

I'm sure the Actium is a great sword but unfortunately it's not really historical accurate. Two fullers and the blade shape isn't really a mainz or a fulham... so, Deebeka is probably better for historical accuracy. BUT, as a cutting sword I'm pretty sure the Actium is the best production gladius available.

Not difficult at all, iiibarakaiii. Of the three, I'd take the gladius. I have one and it's a good blade. Only drawback is the round grip, common in gladii that I've seen, makes it prone to turn in the hand during the cut.

Roun grips are historically accurate, so not much you can do. I would take the Actium over it though, because the two little fullers are not really that much of a problem and it looks as if overall it is a Mainz pattern gladius, which is what I prefer btw and is the best cutting quality gladius for it prize range anyway...

An interesting point about the handle and cutting is that the gladius is not foremost a cutting blade, anyway. It's a stabber. Twist the handle all you want while stabbing, open up the wound a bit more.
Hook a finger the right way on the "guard" and you're peachy for cutting.
As to historical accuracy...didn't see that in his conditions for purchase, and it's debatable from the beginning. He merely mentioned a "love for the gladius design" and a wish to find such with a "blood groove" which we all know is actually called a fuller in common western terminology and has nothing to do with blood. The Actium is this, in a very pretty package.
Of course, the Gen2s are good, too. I imagine they've improved since the last time I had a look at them.
Depeeka, of course, is a no-go.

Curse you TOM! I've been trying not to look at awesome swords that would tempt me into buying one.
But as far as my 2/100th of a dollar goes, here's my vote:
1st: VA Gladius 2nd: Gen2 Wasp 3rd: SBG Waka 4th: Cheness
But if you are like the rest of us, and a little strapped for cash, that might influence your decision further. Let us know which way you go so that way we can live vicariously through you!

This may not be what your looking for but it fits a few of the descriptions you mentioned........http://www.swampratknifeworks.com/
This weapon has a shorter blade and the combat knife coating you were looking for. It may not be as pleasing to the eye, but as you can see from the videos.........it certainly gets the job done.

Also remember the 10% discount you would get at Arms of Valor on the Gen 2 Wasp Waisted gladius by using the SBG code. ;D
It is a proven cutter and you can't beat it for the price.
