I had to put this in general, so that everyone will see it. After this the design submissions and poll threads will be moved to the special projects section. But for now we need an indication of numbers.
"Will you buy a SBG special Fantasy sword".
Obviously this will be conditional on your love for the final winning design WHEN it is done - that will be sorted out in good time. As I said for now we really need expressions of interest to see if this is viable. Once the design has been voted on and won, and pricing is approved, and if you then commit to it; it will be made in a timely fashion. Quite likely by BKS at this stage.
When all is said and done and orders are placed, once you're in, you're in, no backng out, but the swords will be done in a timely mannor if BKS are managing this. Pricing can be expected to be between $350 and $450usd.
To be clear: This sword will be a simple hilted (not complex hilted, but the shape can be very artistic), cruciform design, double edged, bastard sword.
It will be 42" overall. It will have a 31" blade. It will have a 7.5" grip. Period.
If there are sufficient numbers (around 25/30) there will be a design submission thread to follow. For designs to be considered they must meet those simple criterior. Blade types, grip wraps, guard, and pommel types will be open to the imagination.
*NOTE* Design Submission thread is OPEN: /index.cgi?action=display&board=projects&thread=12200&page=1
Voting will follow after that.
Note - if the people wont pay over $350usd we might have to be looking at a sword with no fullering, shorter blade, no scabbard, no grip risers. That will be confirmed by Matt in the future. Actually Matt can help paint a better picture than I can as to whats possible at what price, and what numbers would be needed.
*NOTE : Your vote can be retracted if you opt out*

This sounds good to me, but I don't have the money and I don't know if I can find a job soon, but if I get a job soon I will seriously consider it. As it is, too much is uncertain about my financial future for me to be able to say anything either way. I am looking forwards to seeing some design submissions though.

I would be interested,
In the spirit of keeping (whatever the final design is) affordable, i voted for the [no higher than $350] option.
But, should the consensus be in favor of a higher priced design then i will beg & borrow to match that price tag.

As much as I would love it, no. I would rather have my own custom as in my current finances buying a sword is really a 'special affair'.
Thanks, -Tajima

I voted no higher than $350 to keep the project more accessible for the group and keep within the spirit of this forum .............. if a wonderful design at a higher cost comes out of this and the number of SBGer's is sufficient to justify the project I can easily be persuaded to spend more for a worthy blade.

Count me in.
I was interested in this project back when it first started and am glad to see it amongst the living again. I'm not oozing money from every orifice, but I'd be willing to spend a little bit more if it means getting a truly superior sword.

I voted no higher than $350... because I feel that with the buying power of a project we should be able to get some damn nice swords for $350...
Hell the first project i recall here was the AT1315 for $300.

Brendan, will the sword be similar to this: Simple hilted, cruciform design, double edged, bastard sword - 42" overall - 31" blade - 7.5" grip - dude is holding it. Either way, you have my support.

Phillip, I didn't mean simple in shape like that, unless thats what you want? By 'simple' I meant simple construction - cruciform guard - Not a basket hilt or complex guard, ring guard etc. The shape can be very artistic I'm sure. Basically I'm sure almost every that I've ever made would qualify. Minus unnecessary spacers and rings etc. Sam - I suggested VA in the OP. Sonny has offered to help. I just think it has to be sourced offshore to meet the pricepoint. And I support their new work. Do you have any other suggestions? We tossed it around as to BB, BKS, and I pitching in but we are too expensive to feed

I went with the $350 cap just to keep it in reach of more people. I too think Sean would make an excellent team lead on this. he's reliable, semi-smart ( ) and knows this forum and it's people. I would prefer a fantasy sword mainly because I would like it to be original and not just another type XII or XVIII. But I also want it to be simple and not gaudy. So fantasy but could have been real is the way I'd go. Make a good SBG sword and I'm in. P.S. I would not object to a sword similar to Madmartigan's. It may be simple but...it's Madmartigan!!

Sure Chris - without getting into a debate about Historic vs Fantasy. We're not talking Kit Rae. We're talking artistic interpretations using historic principles. Like Fable Blades Not Gaudy. But lets allow everyone to be creative with designs. We can open for design submissions in a few days. Once the designs are in and if they meet the criteria we can vote on them. Once one is chosen, we'll do a new poll and see how many confirmed orders we will get. THEN we can know if this thing will fly.

BKS already stated they would jump in and VA too. I guess we should settle first on a model before choosing a maker, maybe the one we would like will not fit the maker we will choose. And since it will be hard enough to choose something we will all like lets focus on what we want before we choose who will do it. I voted 450 US, but i would prefer keeping it lower for sure, but i want this to happen I vote fantasy with an exotic ricasso, leaf blade etc. members could chime in with their own designs. ( and yes... no kit Rae lookalike ) Hand n half or two handed... but all this will be part of another poll i guess. And yes, if Sean is up to it he has my vote for the project leader !

It will be a hand and a half with basic specs as per the OP. That has already been voted on, so we'll keep it as simple as possible and reduce the variables. For sure BKS would be welcome if they can do a sharp sword for $350 ish. But it would have to be a fully functional diamond profile, not a hex, and maybe even fullered. We'll know more when the design is chosen. Chinese can get more bang for the buck, though obviously a BKS would be preferable if it's possible, or even an odin or a fable? But I promise right now theres no way I'm making them for that price. Anyone want a full custom we can talk

I also voted for the $350 price point but if a nice scabbard would come with it $450 would be OK. I agree with Chris, I also want it to be simple and not gaudy. I'm not much of a fable/fantasy fan, but many do look real nice. Also, if it is made too fancy it would drive the cost up of production because the parts would have to be separately engineered and because of the limited quantity, would not be very economical to produce. Another thing we need to realize is last years $300 sword is $330 today, so next year .............?

Changed to $450. Might as well go all the way.

Chinese can get more bang for the buck, .... At the cost of other critical elements though. If I were to be buying one of the swords (theoretically), I would want a few design changes in Valiant's chinese forges' construction methods, As well as an outline of they're practices.
