I loved Morrowind, and I exploited the crap out of it, stopping at about level 150 because I got tired of being pointlessly powerful. When I bought Oblivion, I really liked it. But the more I played it, it seemed like they tried too hard to make it bigger than Morrowind and it ended up being less enjoyable. I probably only have 20-30 hours on Oblivion.
As for sword games, a favorite of mine will always be Champions of Norrath. It's one of the only reasons my PS2 is still hooked up.
I'm looking forward to the new motion capture technologies used in the Wii, PS3 and XBOX360. So far, the PS3's looks the best, and if they release a great sword game, I'll probably end up buying it just for that (and maybe to download Ragdoll Kung Fu). Same thing for the Wii, though I think the XBOX and PS3 would be better platforms on the sole basis that they have more capabilities, I think the "fun factor" is higher in the Wii.

An entire Empire within 10 square miles that possesses two whole crop fields I'm of the school of thought that BethSoft can't level design :S Also, if you haven't played, Nox is a fun old game. The only RPG Westwood did for the PC. M.

Zelda, Yes. Soul Calibur II, Yes. Umm... Diablo II anyone? Also, there's probably not too many people who have played, but one of my all time favorite games, and probably one of the things I can attribute to my interest in swords is Betrayal at Krondor. Oh DOS. I miss you. (its freeware now, and if any of you are Raymond E. Feist fans, you should find it along with a DOS emulator) The sequel game was also fun for me, but less... good. I've still played through it like 30 times though.

Its not strictly about swords but there is a game by the name of "Mount&Blade" that is set in a kind of a alternate medieval land called Calradia, and I find it to be quite entertaining. anyway here is the website www.taleworlds.com/If I remember correctly if you go to downloads and download the game you can play the full game up to a certain level(character lvl 6 or 8 I think)so basically its like a demo. also this game is quite modable resulting in people coming out with mods about the hundred years war, the crusades, etc. which is nice.

D'OH! How did I forget Mount and Blade? It's a good hack n slash, but gets better with a few mods.
Kajim, I play both online and offline, as well as Diablo 1 on occasion.

Champions of Norrath was a superb game, the first one...the second one was just more of the same so I wasn't nearly as enthused as I was the first time around. I held onto that Level 50 barbarian chic for as long as I could... Baldur's Gate is another great one where you have a crapload of weapons and weapon types to choose from. I wish they made them for the next-gen systems...I'd pick one of'm up in a heartbeat.

So... can any of you please compile a list of which of the afore-mentioned games are available for the PS2? I really want a couple good new games, but I don't know which of those 35 or so games i can actually get. Thanks! -Slayer

For the PS2:
Baldur's Gate:Dark Alliance and Baldur's Gate:Dark Alliance II (set in the Forgotten Realms of D&D land) Champions of Norrath
Those two follow the same premise, but I give the edge to Norrath in terms of variety (different races/classes and genders; in BG and BG2 you have the ability to select from one of three (BG) or one of five (BG2) different characters, and each one has a different set of attributes to get acquainted with depending on what sort of player you are. Plus in Norrath there are LOTS more weapons and armor types to choose from and they get more and more cool as you level up. You start with the equivalent of leather armor and work your way up til enchanted plate....very, very cool.
Bushido Blade Onimusha
Shadow of Rome (if you've ever had any sort of gladiatorial interest, this is game you must have in your collection; its a two-fold story so you'll follow along using one of two characters that will switch up at different points in the story; the stealth parts are worth it just to get to the arena)
The Bard's Tale (less in-depth swordplay, most snarkiness and off-color comedy but still a good story) Devil May Cry (for over the top sword and gun play) Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance (more involved-gladiator stuff but less of a story than Shadow of Rome) God of War (just kick-ass style of swordplay) God of War II (even MORE) LOTR: Two Towers (you get to fight your way through the set-piece battles of the movie using any of the Fellowship) LOTR: Return of the King (more of the above but using ROTK battles - freakin AWESOME if you're a LOTR fan)
Maximo vs. Army of Zin (this seems kiddified at first until you realize it is a neat little hack and slash with some lite-RPG elements to it) Pirates of the Carribbean - if you liked the movies, you'll like the games
Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown (less sword and more strategy but an interesting game nonetheless- the segments where you storm a castle is where the sword comes into play- simplified but fun)
King Arthur (if you liked the Clive Owen movie you may like this, but the PS2 version was buggy if I recall so you might just want to pass on this)
Soulcalibur
Keep in mind, these are just the ones I have played...there are others out there, like the ninja or samurai-themed games out there but they weren't really for me so I never got into them.
I know it seems like a lot but the PS2 has the most extensive library of any extant video game system, barring the PC...just hundreds of titles to choose from. Good luck, man.

FYI the elder scrolls 2 : Daggerfall was made free to download/play by Bethesda for I think the 15th anniversary of the TES franchise. Daggerfall is a fantasy game that involves weapons, armor, magic, dungeon crawling and the like(quite reminiscent of later Might and Magic games), and is old enough that any machine now days can play it. www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htmDon't forget to download DOSbox and the installation and instruction guide(unless of course you already know how to use DOSbox or a similar program )

Agreed for the Baldurs gate games and the Lord Of The Rings ones as well as the Bard's tale. PS2 is still an excellent console.

James, I mentioned that WAY back...that is, for me, the greatest swordsman game out there...sure, its Hollywood style but you gotta admit, the death animations are as cool as they come (if a little over the top) and the main character is as badass as you can get w/out magic, or magical weapons or being superhuman. I STILL play it from time to time; just to challenge the guardsmen to see how many bodies I can rack up before they stop coming around. LOL
But Slayer asked for PS2 games and AC wasn't made for it; just as well...it wouldn't have translated well to the aging PS2 hardware- still a good little machine but it is far behind the times now. The XBOX had a lot more to offer, even tho it didn't do quite as well.
sparky...this is over the space of about 12 years or so...my wife is very understanding when it comes to game time- keeps me in the house and NOT spending money in a bar, tiddy or otherwise, you know? Plus, she gets to go shopping whenever she likes and I don't complain...cuz I get to play while mama's away!
I have 2 girls who don't live with us (they live with their ma a couple hours away) and a 50 minute commute, one way. But while you have little, little ones, my girls are 18 and 15. Kinda self sufficient at this stage of the game!

I SOOOOO want assasin's creed. I've even considered getting a used Xbox ($50) just for that purpose, but I really don't have the extra cash to spare. However, I DO know what will be at the top of my wish list for Christmas. Xbox 360, of course. For now, though, I have but a PS2 and a Wii (that I want to sell, so it doesn't count!). I LOVE my PS2, I've just played every game I have for it about 25 times over. If any of you have other recommendation or can attest to the value of a certain PS2 game, whether it's been mentioned or not, that would be great. Don't you see? It's not just that I rely on SBG for sword related stuff, I need you guys for everything. ;D Thanks! -Slayer SPELLING EDIT

I hope you get that X360 for Christmas, because then you can also get this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin%27s_Creed_III for one am anxiously awaiting this one and I'm quite sure I'm not the only one. Bet Mr. Gall gets it too...especially with the more advanced parkour mechanics (Slayer, did I tell you that free-running across rooftops is more fun than in any game I've ever played to date?); increased weapon sets (halberds, pikes and certain gunpowder type weapons will be intro'd) and now, water won't be the ultimate buzz kill like in the first AC where you automatically drowned if you even touched water. But that was a small, very small peeve for me. I gave you a pretty comprehensive list; you've played all of those?
