Just wanted to share with you guys one of my favorite video games (for those of you who plays) that involves swords and non-firearm weapons in general:
Soul Calibur 2 - Xbox/PS2/Gamecube - This is probably the best one in the Soul Calibur series. One of the character is Mitsurugi. You can unlock man variants of the weapon and different costumes/clothing for the characters. Mitsurugi's unlocks include different Katanas and different outfits such as Samurai armor to Yukatas...
Oblivion - This game is just humongous and has a fantasy theme to it. You can customize the heck out of your character. There are many "add-ons" and "mods" that are user/community created, so you can have any weapon you can think of.
Anyone else out there video game and have a sword-related game to recommend?

One of my favorite games as a kid was Bushido Blade 2.

As a fan of Morrowind, I found Oblivion to be absolute trash with few redeeming qualities :S
I'm fond of Nox; it's got sword action if you're a Warrior. Diablo 1 and 2 are always good, too.

I preferred Oblivion over Morrowind...Morrowind just took too much time to get around and have you looked at it recently? Horribly ugly.
Bushido Blade, THAT was the game I was trying to remember...now that one was a lot of fun.
Assassin's Creed is probably my favorite sword-related game right now; I like it better than any of the aforementioned as far as the sword work goes. Fable's also a good game.

I was such a fan of Oblivion that I tried to play Morrowind. Could not do it. I tried so hard to enjoy that game. Now I'm stuck on Fallout 3 at least until they finish Elder Scrolls 5.

Bushido Blade, THAT was the game I was trying to remember...now that one was a lot of fun. Bushido Blade for PS1 now that was a game that tried to get some realism in sword fighting. I would love to see a resurrection of the original of this game for either PC or X-Box 360. That would be a fighting game i could even get my wife into although she might like the Soul Calibur series. (Has to have a decent storyline for her.) Somebody out there needs to closely study several schools of swordsmanship and the effects of a real blade going through targets (kinda like they did for the total war series but including Chinese and Japanese weaponry) along with Grey's anatomy and then give us a fighting game based on that research. As long as they do it for a platform I own (PC or X-box 360).

I was rather fond of Kengo before my PS2 crapped itself (that little oopsie with the lens and blue/purple discs...never got that fixed) and the Onimusha franchise has been a favorite for years.
I'll even acknowledge Devil May Cry for its funtastic swording. Genji is another good adventure game with swordy stuff, and there are dozens, maybe hundreds more, but I can't think of 'em.
Kengo was awesome, though.

LOL @ LPB
I'm with you man...Bushido Blade would not be too hard to remake if they stuck to the original formula; my daughters love Soul Calibur- I used to play it when it was in the arcade but not anymore.
lol @ monkeybear
That's pretty much what happened for me; I'd gotten screenshots of Oblivion before it came out and saw that Morrowind was the current title- I didn't like it, even then. Graphics mean something to me, though...and I wasn't feeling that game.
Altho, I'm not sure if ultra-realistic swordwork would sell very well...it just isn't as flashy or as exciting...but having realistic injuries might help toward said sales.

I still think Oblivion was an Atrocity. And this is coming from a guy who bought the collectors edition.

Devil May Cry for gameplay Legend of Zelda. I am a huge Zelda nerd. Final Fantasy -Any.. Except 10 pt.2- Samurai/Dynasty Warriors. Also fun Ninja Gaiden I loved Castlevania Lament to Innocence (I think it was called... ) but its gameplay is very similar to DMC, which is not a bad thing, just not creative. Fable
And cannot remember what else I used to play...

Ok, I realize this will probaly get me castigated by all you video game sxperts, but please be tolerant. I'm not much of a video gamer. Had an atari, but that was the end of it untill I bought a wii for my daughter at christmas. I became addicted to the boxing on the wii sports and have a skill level over 3000. Now, heres my question....are there any good sword games for the wii? Maybe something that focuses on form and speed against an opponent? I've seen the first person shooter game like "red steel", but the swordplay seemed like it wasn't much and not what I was after. So, you guys have any suggestions?

Sometimes I feel SO out of touch. Though I can't do the boxing 'cause of a screwed up shoulder. About the only thing I play on we is WWII flying aces. I would love to find a good sword type game. I miss my Atari

Ah, the Wii... I liked it better when it was the Revolution. Red Steel gameplay I felt was crap. Played kind of like the old 007 games for N64 (crap) and I couldn't make the sword (if I could ever get one) do what I wanted it to do. Pretty much the Zelda franchise is about the biggest swordesque games you'll find...though one of the Sports packages or some other pack has a fun little cutting minigame for you and your Mii. There was a video, I'll see if I can find it.

There are no good sword games for the WII. The problem is that the controller is too innaccuate for any kind of realism. There is the new Wii Motion Plus which is supposed to change all that though. Its a $20 add on you snap onto the bottom of the regular Wii controller. I hope to see some good sword games coming out now. I know that Red Steel 2 uses the Wii Motion+.

I do agree about the Morrowind/Oblivion debate. I was a HUGE fan of Morrowind (logged probably 500+ hours on that game, this isn't including the "oh crap let's reload").
When I switched to Oblivion, I thought the eye-candy was definitely improved, but the soundtracks to Morrowind, the general feel (bleek, dark and dusty continent) couldn't be matched or beat.
However, Oblivion is the new Morrowind today, and the mod community tended to shift towards there.
----
Regarding the WII, I'm probably gonna be blasted from mentioning this, but there is a "sword" related game, and I quote "swords" because the theme is a Star Wars Lightsaber game.
I don't know, as much as I love these steel based sword, I wouldn't mind having a real lightsaber to mess with... Can you imagine the cutting demonstrations that can be done? ;P

With a lightsaber you cut bundles of rebar instead of mats.

I like both Oblivion and Morrowind, though there are things I thought each did better than the other, and Oblivion couldn't hold my interest for as long. I'm also a huge Zelda fan, the first Zelda was the first video game I ever saw or played, and it's what got me started liking swords.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned Way of the Samurai and its sequel for PS2, those were some great sword-fighting games, and very fun. each one has a ton of swords to collect and multiple styles/stances you can use, and the games have multiple endings depending on which faction you join and what actions you take. Of course, you can always just run around picking random fights with people, but that gets you killed pretty quick.

For me, Morrowind was what got me into swords in general. I would love to have a functional DDK. The demonic theme to it is just absolutely beautiful...
