Hehe, well jon, you just understood the most basic thing about swords from this thread. There are many collectors who still don't have the concept of it's all about trade off wrapped around their head. As for that 20%...don't worry about. There is a good chance you will not even notice...ever. This has nothing to do with you as a swordsman...it has more to do with you as a scholar. There are plenty of people who do serious WMA and are quite good at WMA who can't tell much of a difference between the VA atrims and a real one. It's not because they are bad swordsmen...it's because to them the small difference isn't that imprtant. To somebody who studies swords extensively like say shootermike with his collection, that difference jumps out pretty much instantly. So to some the difference maybe only really 5% as far as they can tell...for others who spend more time on the sword over swordmanship, it's 20%. In anycase, it is not something you will even remotely be able to judge and notice and appricate until you have some years of doing something, anything with swords. A good sword is nice for a first sword (I spent 800 bucks for my first sword)...but your not gonna really know for a while. In fact my first sword isn't a style of sword I particular like it turns out (not that I don't adore it as my first sword mind you ). So basically don't fret, enjoy the options you have (when I got my first sword, I had the choice of deepka, windlass, del tin or custom...guess which version costs 800 bucks ).

Since all you guys are already in this thread, could I convince you to make a Signature model with a XIIIb type blade? I would have to take back what I said about the line not being my thing. I can discuss a XIIIb with Christain and Gus. You never know. Right now we've got plenty of irons in the fire, but we will do some new Signature swords for next year so who knows? Sonny

Man. That would be tasty. Unique, too! The only XIIIb on the market is the Albion Tritonia, unless another has snuck by. That's a niche that needs to be filled.

Hehe...well yeah as long as we are talking about a wish list...how about a XVIa...there is the albion crecy and the Atrim XVIa bastard sword and that's it for that sword type(can't remember a del tin with a XVIa blade...or a XIIIb for that matter)...actually since there is an atrim blade already, a signature sword based off that blade would be pretty awesome...hint hint . I do admit that the XIIIb is way more niche though...and that's really a bad thing if your a fan of XIIIb swords. I'm gonna guess that it'll be hard for sonny to break even on a sword as niche market as a XIIIb. Yeah he may be the only anywhere near sub 300 with a XIIIb...but I don't see much apeal after the first wave of people who are a fan get one. And honestly, even a XVIa which will have greater apeal will be a hard sell honestly (although if one does get made, I'm so getting one...once I pay off my ER bills anyways).

I'm not very familiar with the XIIIb, only the XIII and the XIIIa. Thank you sword nation for posting the stats when you are able to. I look forward to examining them in the future.

I just think the XIIIb is unpopular BECAUSE no one's made it. If one got out there and was designed with the classic XIII mentality (cutting like nobody's business), I can't imagine it not being popular. I mean, here we have a community almost entirely focused on the cutting aspect of swords, and the type XIII was basically designed to shear through mail. You put that kind of power into a heavy one-hander, combine it with the imposing blade profile of the type XIII, and you instantly have a classic "hero's sword." Heck, it does that better than even a fantasy blade, in my opinion. The appeal is there alright, it's just hard to see because no one's made it yet. JoKen, XIIIb is the single handed variant of the XIII.

That explains it then. That sounds like it would mean the sword would have a pretty big blade.

Jonathan, I recommend you to read this: www.myarmoury.com/feature_spotxiii.htmlMore of useful information here:http://www.myarmoury.com/features.html Yrx: Sorry man, but no sword, not even XIII, XIIIa and XIIIb can cut through mail. You cut unarmored people or people armored with textile defenses. Mail armored people you just break bones and crush muscles through mail with heavy blows but you don't cut mail. And plate armored people you stun and bruise with warhammers, maces and polearms, and pierce the mail on the openings of plates with acute daggers and acute swords with halfswording.

Speaking of XIIIAs, does anybody know when the Tinker Greatsword, or what ever it is will be released? Does anyone have any information on it, for that matter? I saw a video of Mr. Tinker with a prototype of it and I was reminded of William Wallace's sword from Braveheart.

Tinker/CAS Hanwei's Great Sword of War... or GSoW for short... many of us are egerly waiting for it... the prototype he had looksed SO sexy. ;D My only fear is... I have not seen a single Hanwei Western non katana sword YET that had a decent cutting edge out of the box... I really want the GSoW, but I want Hanwei to get of it's butt and figure out how to sharpen a damn non katana sword. Grrrrrr.

While you maybe right, the chances that you are right vs what the market has been saying over the past 10 years is pretty slim. While a XIIIb is sorta kinda knightly, it just doesn't have the classic knightly sword line that the XII does. Maybe when the western sword collecting markets get bigger...but the western market is nowhere near the size of the japanese sword market and see how few the the rarer geometries are in that market? The niche geometries are a niche for a reason.

I am interested in this GSoW, as you call it. I wonder how much it will cost.

Sorry for the double-post, but this is an update. I am now having second thoughts about getting the VA swords. I realise that I will be able to get an albion now, but I don't know if I really want to or not. I won't be able to get the XIIIAs from Albion, but I can get most of the single handed swords or a Crecy. The pro is that it is an Albion, so there is no possible way that I will be dissapointed. The cons are that I won't be able to get a scabbard or belt, and I will obviously only have one sword. I won't have the two handed sword type that I want either. However, I wonder if the fact that it is an Albion will outweigh these cons. OMG!!!!!!!! CF's Antioch just came out! It looks stunning, and I bet that it is extremely good as far as functinality. Should I get this instead of Albion's Knight or Crecy? My fickle mindset is kicking in. Everyone post your opinions on the matter, and thank you all for the help.

I would say the Albion Crecy. It appears to have enough hilt to be used with two hands. I don't have that one nor have I handled it but I love the look of it. I have a couple Atrims and an Albion Poitiers. Of the two brands I give the edge to the Albion. Better fit and finish and just as good in hand. That's just my opinion and others would disagree. It should be noted that my Atrims are pretty basic models, The fancied up ones might make a different impression. It's all good to each his own. Don't be so sure you wouldn't be disappointed in an Albion. Others have tried them and found them wanting. Thing is, there are no perfect swords (that I know of anyway). What one has to do is find the ones they like. My own preferences have changed greatly since finding this site. Widened quite a bit too I might add.

I am really tempted to get the Crecy. I am also tempted to get the Knight, or the CF Antioch. Dangit, it is so hard making a final decision!

I have the crecy and it is a pretty great sword. It's my fourth favorite production sword to hold in hand (the albion sherrif is number 1 and the albion solingen is number 2 and the Atrim single fuller type XIV is my number 3...what I like how type XIV feel in my hand...just not how they look)...but it's my favorite in the looks department which is why I chose it . Honestly speaking, the knight is a good example of a "typical" one handed sword and the crecy is a good example of a "typical" longsword. But since it looks like you pooled together 800 bucks at least, maybe waiting a little for some of the other CF prestige swords to come out wouldn't be a bad idea either. Or see what shows up on myarmoury classified. Although the crecy does handle quite nicely one handed and is bloody fast with two hands. I find it makes a pretty good all around sword as it has decent point control and can cut well enough...even with the tip and forte, and the pommel makes for some mean pommel strikes.

I would definitely grab Crecy if I were you. But if not, AT Antioch is definitely the winner between it and the Knight.

I wish that ShooterMike would give me his opinion on the Crecy. He used it in a video, but all he cut was waterbottles and milk jugs, which doesn't say a whole lot. If he had have cut tatami mats I might have a better idea on its handling. Are you sure that the Antioch is better than the Knight? I read the Knight's review on myarmoury and it sounds like it is a really nice sword. I don't really know anything about the Antioch though, since it is new.

I would choose the Antioch because of better looks and Atrim is sure not inferior to Albion in handling and performance. Details and historicity were the things that gave the Albion edge over the Atrim before the Prestige line was introduced.
