FYI, Museum Replicas is owned by Atlanta Cutlery... both companies were bought by Windlass in 1995 windlass.com/about-us/

BTW, if you're ever inteested in getting it customized, check out Cuscadi Scales on Facebook - they have an impecable reputation for customized scales at reasonable prices.

I don't typically like when knives only have one side scaled, that's probably the biggest thing putting me off this one. That's the same exact thing my wife says about my Hinderers and other midtech knives - she HATES the idea of only having the scale on one side of the knife, which is why I'll never give her anything like that. She absolutely loves and EDC's the SOG Mini Vulcan tanto I gave her about a year ago though. Sorry Adrian if I derailed your thread... um, it's still a very nice knife, and um, yeah - D2 composite edge on the Cryo!

The H/T Viking is a very nice sword, but the grip is a little on the small side (rewrapping it is a good project though), and the pommel can be a b!tch on your wrist using a regular gripping style. I'm not too familiar with Euro swords since I'm mostly into JSA, but after dry handling a customized Crusader Monk H/T Viking a few times (sold it here on the forum about a month ago), it felt really good in hand (except for the small grip and pommel) - good blade presence and a really solid feel to it.

Adrian Jordan said:
You probably already know this, but all Hinderer designed flippers have the thumb studs as a blade locking feature - they're not really studs in the usual sense, as they're more for locking the blade against the frame to prevent lateral movement. As for the detent, I had a similar issue with one I bought over a year ago... pretty stiff as far as detents go. I sold it locally about a month after getting it, so I didn't get a chance to break it in. In any case, I really like the design and look of this knife. As for the Cryo G10 in premium steel (which ELMAX is btw) - good luck with that. I don't think ZT will offer them like in S30V or VG10 though.

VA 303, H/T EMSHS, or Windlass type XIV in that order... at least for me. If you like heavier swords, then I would suggest the opposite order for you - Windlass, then H/T, then the VA.

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird that their response to rising costs is to get rid of wholesale discounts? That was actually my first thought - getting rid of wholesale prices for retailers like KOA or smaller businesses like mine makes no (business) sense. Like Wes stated before, I think this is going to have a negative effect on their bottom line in the long term. The short term effect of having all of their products sold/ordered before March 1st will not really affect their long term problems imho, and will really only make things worse for the company.

Yes, the rep I spoke to said this will affect all retailers. Prices will go up after current stock is depleted. If you've ever wanted to get a Windlass model, better do it before prices go up - either that, or buy on the secondary market.

I just got a letter from Windlass - it seems that they're halting wholesale pricing for ALL retailers (excluding costumes and LARP gear). If you ever wanted to get a Windlass sword or other weapon from your favorite store, now's the time since the pricing will change starting March 1st.
February 13, 2015 Dear Sir/Madam, I would like to inform you of a change to our wholesale program. We will no longer be able to provide a discount on any items currently being manufactured by Windlass Steelcrafts effective March 1, 2015. This has been necessitated by the market, rising labor & material cost and the resulting low margins. Orders received after this date will not be processed for Windlass Steelcrafts items which include armor, shields, helmets, swords, daggers, etc. This is a decision that was not arrived at lightly. However due to market constraints we are forced to pull back the offerings. Your company has been a good reseller for our brands and we would like to continue business with you through our other lines which include clothing/costumes/accessories from our garment manufacturing company R.S.Windlass & Sons. We value your business and sincerely regret any inconvenience to it this may cause. Thank you for your understanding. Sincerely, Mr. Pradeep Windlass President Windlass Steelcrafts subsidiaries in the USA

I hate scammers of all kinds. I can understand why some people would want to scam others, but nontheless, it really gets my goat to see it happen, especially when someone is trying to do something good for others. Derrick Bohn (Kinves Ship Free) had some problems with scammers, and sent out an email about it. He has this to say:
"In the first 3 days [of the Knives for Kids program], we gave away almost 4000 knives. 3000 more knives than I planned and had in stock. I called my Buck rep and bought 3000 more so I could send them out to parents to give to their kids as we had promised.
On Sunday, I printed a bunch of orders so I could start engraving and get the knives out as soon as possible. My daughter Elizabeth and I engraved and packed all day long and into the night.
It wasn't until Monday I realized (I know, I am kind of slow) there were people who were just blatantly taking advantage of our offer. Some were obviously ordering for themselves. Some ordered large quantities--20, 30, even 50 knives.
Those were on top of the hundreds and hundreds of good people (like you) who caught the vision for what we were doing and ordered knives for their kids. Some ordered one. Some two. Some three. We had grandparents who wanted to bless their grandkids. They carefully listed out each grandkid -- one of them totaled over 20.
We poured over and over the list of orders. We cancelled the orders from people who were obviously just grabbing for something free--those were easy. But there are a lot of orders that are not easy to figure out what is real, what is fraudulent, and what is just beyond the scope of what we can do."
He has promissed to open up the program again in the future, but will ask for a small donation for the knife instead of giving it away for free. I sincerely hope that the scammers were all weeded out and that this doesn't happen again. Unfortunately, I know there are always going to be scammers out there much to the detriment of all.

The latest from Derrick Bohn - Knives Ship Free - they've suspended the Knives for Kids program for the time being seeing as they've already hit 4,000. He stated they would open up the program in the near future, with some people already on the waiting list.

just a quick anecdote: a buddy of mine sells knives/gear for a living and was recently told AT THE POST OFFICE (San Antonio TX) that he couldn't ship out knives because it was against P.O. rules for that city (they have ridiculously harsh knife laws in S.A.)... he had his brand's name on the package, so he had to go back and repackage it in another box. Mind you, he'd been selling/shipping out knives for a while, but mostly online, not in person. It wasn't until he went inside the P.O. that he was told NO. Oh, and he was shipping in the CONUS.

Derrick Bohn just sent out a revised email stating he's ordered 3,000 additional knives. In essence, this program is a LOT bigger than what they were expecting, but are happy with the results nonetheless. Btw, the name you entered when ordering a knife will be laser etched onto it, which means that the orders are back logged for the time being. Derrick stated about 1 week to get the 1st batch of knives etched, the next after that.

Derrick Bohn, owner of Knives Ship Free mentioned that he had 1,000 knives in stock for the kid's program - also said they ran out on the 1st day. He stated he was ordering an additional 1,500 knives and would see how those took off. Seems like a great success to me!
