Like someone said at the beginning of the thread, actual Motorcycle leathers. Not very encumbering. Not noisy. Tough enough to keep their teeth off you for a second if you get attacked by a zombie hiding in a corner... They are also hot. Do you want to run around with them on during the summer?

Depends on where you are. I sure as hell would be running in them in, say, Alaska in the summer, as long as I stayed out of the interior... And since my zombie survival plan includes running my ass to somewhere cold like Alaska...

And since my zombie survival plan includes running my ass to somewhere cold like Alaska... Why have armor at all in that kind of environment? You should be able to see and/or elude possible threats without the need of armor. Also consider that there are probably tens of thousands of people with the same idea as you so there will be a mass migration of people to relatively un-inhabited areas. Which means the zombies will follow. Best thing to do is to hide out somewhere safe for a year to a year and a half then re-enter a city. By that time most of the zombies will have moved on. Or go with my plan, set up camp on an oil rig Virtually unlimited fuel supplies, completely in-accessible to zombies, plentiful food.

It's too bad you can't get zombies to fight each other. We could have some old old fashion gladiator fights.

Unless I head up to the North Slope, I'm not going to be in the tundra. And even if I Was in the Tundra, remember the rules still apply: If I can see you, you can see me. Most of Alaska is pretty dense jungle and mountain terrain, and I'm hiking my happy butt up into the mountains. Bring on the tens of thousands of migrants trying to escape from the zombies. Maybe a few thousand will even make it all the way to Alaska's cities. Maybe a few hundred will make it over the first ridge of the mountains. And at least I won't have to be constantly fighting off healthy people who just happened to be able to grab a boat at the beginning of the outbreak and are now trying to take oil from your rig...

Maybe a few thousand will even make it all the way to Alaska's cities. Maybe a few hundred will make it over the first ridge of the mountains. To me, armor still seems un-necessary. If you build your defenses well, keep an eye and an ear open, stay alert and you wont need armor. Even if you have armor that wont weigh much, why add ANY extra weight at all if you don't really need to? If you are going into cold weather, it may be smart to combine clothing with armor (Get clothing that can double as armor such as a leather jacket and thick gloves) but if you dont need protection from the weather I simply do not see the need for armor. If its three or four zombies, take them out yourself. If its fifty, run like hell and dont get cornered. Having armor simply means that if it ever does get in close, yes you may survive a little longer but that generally doesnt mean too much when dealing with zombies. If fifty corner you, living to kill 20 is no better than killing 5 before you die, you still DIE. Its not necessarily the survivors you have to deal with that are the problem, but the zombies (like any predator) will follow the food and will be drawn up to the northern territories very quickly. Contrary to popular belief, zombies probably wouldnt stick around in the cities very long simply because after the first six months or so after a city falling firmly into their hands, all the food will be gone so they will move on. After eight months to a year, most cities will be mostly empty. Oil rigs are formidable fortresses not only to the dead but also to the living. Unless you have some form of air transportation, they are difficult to get onto in the normal course of events if the people already on the rig dont want you on. The gangways are lowered from on the rig and the deck is often far above the surface of the water. Combine that with firearms and the ability to see (And possibly fire on) any craft approaching and you have an incredibly defensible position from the dead AND the living. If a large scale infection takes hold, the rig workers probably wont stay on the rig. They'll be trying to get to their families and friends and arent likely to think too hard on securing the rig. Even if it is secure, several determined people could board a rig if there were no resistance from inside.

As far as food supply goes, why worry?
Bet zombie tastes a lot like chicken.
You know the old saying. "Eat or be eaten ..."

Well, good luck racing everyone else who has the same idea, Helo. Hope you win out. Me? I'm headed cross country where I can survive and 99.9% of the US population can't. Less food for the zombies, fewer zombies, fewer people to worry about, period.

So's lye. Yet SOMEHOW we have ... lutefisk. (OK, maybe zombie will end up tasting like jellied chicken.)

Might as well as why anyone would eat lutefisk!
(Besides, admit it. Chickens are rarely as fun to hunt.)

Simply put, if you need armor it's too late for you.
Think about it. In order to effectively protect against a zombie, you would need the same armor used for attack-dog training. Essentially super-heavy padding that prevents teeth and claws from contacting or crushing your skin.
To achieve this level of protection, you lose almost all proper mobility. You can't hold a gun, you can't haul ass. And if you're not effectively protected, then there's no poin in trying to armor yourself. Lose the armor, and focus on being mobile.

True. As was mentioned before to dress to fight a great number is futile and you will ultimately lose. The armour I would see as a defence against encounters when scavaging, clearing houses, etc. So a simple leather jacket that would provide enough protection to fend off a zombie that surprise attacks you.

A good idea is a suicide rig. If your mobbed by a large group of zombies with no hope of fending them off or you've been bitten and you're going to turn anyway, click, BOOM. A claymore mine on your chest, and one on your back. You'll be vaporized, so you won't feel a thing, and you'll take out a good mass of shamblers with you.
Essentially suicide bomber style, but more as a last-ditch, gonna-die-anyway scenario. I'd much rather be a red mist then a walking dead.

If zombie films are anything to go on then, you are at considerable risk when scavenging in deserted buildings, so I would want some kind of protection to stop zombie teeth, a Gambeson would not slow you down to much and would give you enough protection against bites.
