During the Ming Dynasty, General Qi Jiguang fought against invading Japanese armies with "Rockets" made of hard wood that had attached to them, sharpened long sword blades.
These weapons were pre-staged on wooden racks, with some war ships carrying 4 thousand or more of these scary as heck projectiles that were launched against Japan's great fleet and/or Pirates... during ancient battles.
On Land, each Chinese fortress had as many as 10,000 or more of these screaming swords set and ready to terrorize and combat land assaults...that usually ended when the confused enemy retreated because they couldn't figure out how long swords could be dropping from the heavens to decapitate and mame their troops.
The way the weapon worked was, once the large wooden rocket with its attached sword was launched en masse over an army or ship, the attached sword and heavily weighted spent wooden rocket... spun back down to earth in a very unpredictable and highly erratic manner, spinning, slicing, dicing and impaling everything and anything in its path.... sorta like a modern day helicopter blade gone mad...as it falls from the skies.
These rocket swords were so feared, not one civilization of warriors figured out what the Chinese were doing until 240 years had passed.
I guess running for your life away from a rain-storm wave of sharp blades, beats hanging round to see if the swords were clay tempered or machined ;D
Beyond doubt... The World's Deadliest Sword !
Haz ps. does anyone care to guess what they were called ?
