For those of you who don't know, I am a chief in the United States Coast Guard. as a service our history goes back to 1790 when we were formed as the Revinue Cutter Service. back then our primary mission was to stop smuggling and protect our shores from attack. in recognition of this history it has been proposed that the USCG adopt the wearing of Cutlasses for Chief Petty Officers (me) in adition to officers who already wear sabres. here is a link to the design that could become one of my mandatory uniform items. www.militarysabers.com/coast-guard-cutlass.htmlnow the question: Can anyone find this is heat treated high carbon steel? I reaaaaaly don't want to wear a stainless steel sword.

That's exciting. You know what, that sword you have in your link looks real similar to the Hanwei Naval Boarding Cutlass. This one is high carbon steel and heat treated, just does not come sharp. Congratulations on the ability to wear a sword at work. I don't think my work would allow the IT Guy here to wear one and I am sure I would get some strange looks if I asked ;D

Windlass do one also (not available here in Oz ). From the pictures, it seems to be slightly more accurate than the Hanwei, eg in the shape of the point, but I've not examined either, so don't take my word for it. I'm seriously considering getting the Hanwei one m'self- tossing up at the mo' between it and the Weapon-Edge 1917 pattern (or maybe their French Napoleon Briquet... I'm so decisive ) Anyway, here's the KOA page for the Windlass version kultofathena.com/product~item~500152.htm Congratulations! I'm certainly jealous, and I bet a lot of other forumites will be too! Let us know how it goes. Cheers Marc E

well, I can't wear it yet. they still haven't approved it. these things tend to take time, but I could see it happening in the next 2 years. you guys have good eyes, it is indeed based off the naval 1860 model. it's good to know windlass makes the 1860 perhaps I'll be able to get the USCG modifications done to one of those once we have an official regulation on the design. thanks guys.

Those guys in the link you posted, Tom, really need to change "functional" to "drill" in their description of that "sword."

Those guys in the link you posted, Tom, really need to change "functional" to "drill" in their description of that "sword." The WKC blades are tempered back to about 52/53, despite being what some relate "stainless" as being only evil. One could edged one if allowed but the swords are perfectly functional for drill and parade use. Edging would likely void both purchase and allowance of use. I may be mistaken but a petty officer is going to be issued a piece for duty and the item held in a rack/armory when not in use. That right along with any sidearm (Barreta?) that folk are issued. You might want to talk to your superior officer(s) as to allowance if a private weapon will be approved. Give Ames a call and see if they will etch these for the Coast Guard. That will be the only difference. I believe the blades are sourced in India but put together here. The company has been mentioned as agressively looking for contract arms and the management eager to please. Give them a call or email. www.amessword.com/Cheers Hotspur; use the points boys, save the edge for kindling

Falen, no worries mate. I wasn't really offended, just being a chief.
Hotspur, thanks. I won't be sharpening it anyway I just like the idea that I COULD have a functional blade if I so desired.
if it is a uniform sword it would be considered a cerimonial peice and not a side arm so no need for armory and all that. also why I won't sharpen it. would be cool to have one sharp one though ;D

COAST GUARD CUTLASS! we're a little sensitive about being called "navy" in any way Mind your mouth puddle jumper! You should *BE* so lucky as to be refered to as having anything to do with the United States Navy... Navy Chief, Navy pride Be-atch! ;D The whole Chief's Cutlass thing is pretty awesome tho... they are talking about the same thing for the USN, my wife mentioned it to me several months ago. I plan to have a custom cutlass made for my wife by my man Matt at BKS in the not too distant future.

Ya know, until recently you were under the auspice of the Dept. of Transportation... and now your a sad sorry servent in the Dept. of Homeland Security. I don't blame you for lashing out... I'd be sad too. Just remember... even the most impressive vessel you have in the Coast Guard would have it's ass handed to it by a mid level Naval Destroyer... not to mention our BIG guns. Or We'll just sink your sorry Cutter floating butt from below with a Submarine attack. I belive there are a few submariners on this site. Know your place Chief... in the rear with the gear... and leave the rough stuff to the REAL naval professionals. ;D Now that thats out of the way... yeah, I think it is cool they are bring back the cutlass. My wife digs it too... she was very happy when she told me becuase she knows how I love swords. I'm looking forward to getting a sweet custom cutlass made for her, I hope she will apricate it.

Lol! ;D
guess which service has sunk more submarines. true, in today's environment there's no way we'd stand a chance against a sub. but in WWII that's what we did, and we did it better than anyone, and that's the thing with us: when the chips are down the Coasties shine better than anyone. our motto: "We have done so much with so little for so long we are now qualified to do anything with nothing." you may have the big shiney toys and the better fire power but this is where the hull meets the water. oh, yeah and we can park ourselves without the aid of a tugboat because we're real sailors. ;D
I swear to you, if they make this cutlass official I'll get one that's really functional and I'll do a cutting video while wearing it in uniform. wouldn't that be sweet?

That would be very, very cool. I'd have to send that to Toby. ;D He once said to me 'Without the Coast Guard, who would take care of Navy wives while the husbands are out to sea? Haven't you ever wondered why Navy children are so good looking?' I about busted a gut laughing at that.

This Leatherneck knows better than to wade in here... Heh heh... Now I've seen it all, a Marine afriad to engage in some friendly good natured ribbing of either the Navy or Coast Guard. ;D C'mon in, the water is treacherous.

LOL!
I wasn't going to go to the taking care of navy wives place, but every young coasty knows to go to the naval base E-club the night after the battle group pulls out.
The marine isn't afraid he just knows better than to mess with either of his cab drivers, smart marines are a treasure we should take care of this guy.
Honestly, I think (and most coasties agree) that marines should be loved by every fighting man and woman in every service. they love being the first ones in to get blown up and they always come back for more. I have a lot of respect for marines for more reasons than that.
Afew years ago there was an email going around my ship telling the story of how every single man in a marine unit in Iraq gave up the personal air time they would get from their embedded reporter so that a guy they knew who had kids or pregnant wife or something could get the air time. the email asked "where do they FIND these people?" I knew the answer and shared it: "They don't FIND them, they MAKE them."

My wife once said to me... "Do you know why there are always at least some Marine's on every large Naval ship? Because sheep are just too obvious." I like the bit about cab drivers... a classic for sure.

Thanks Tom...but, I gotta point out that you're missing "M" ( Marines) in your post. Afraid? Nah... I just recognized that the reason The Squid doesn't have more to thump chest about is because Marines do his dirty work? . . . LOL.
