As the title suggests, how do you get over the common cold?
I kinda have one, and I have my own techniques for getting over them, usually never involving modern medicine, as I hate to use it if I don't have to.
Typically I eat Chicken soup (Anti-inflammatory) with onions (Also anti-inflammatory), I eat turmeric, garlic, I stay away from various foods such as tomatos (Studies suggest that they are inflammatory, and my brother and I actualy get mild pain after eating them, so for some hardly noticeable, for me they can mess me up when sick) and acidic things. Plenty of water, nothing else.
I also take tons of hot showers, probably 2-3 everyday, to keep yourself open.
A lot of doctors jump at the chance of giving you meds, so I don't go to see them when I'm sick with a cold. I use these methods and I recover quickly.
Anyone here have a routine?

Thanks to my parents who wernt overprotective of me I have a very good immune system, I get colds and flus like everyone else, though they almost never affect my ability to function...
But when i do get them, ditto on the showers and soup, but also have a couple of concentrated yakult type drinks which I finds reduced the recovery time. I also have some scotch, not sure if it actucally works but does a damn fine job as a placebo if it dosent LOL

Well, I'm not of legal age to be drinking scotch yet, and I don't have any, so I don't think I'll try that method.

Please define modern medicine... otherwise I don't know what I can and can't recommend! Chicken soup appears in medical journals... so does that mean you can't use it anymore?

Chicken soup also appears 2500 years ago in China (Huang Tsi Nei Ching Tsu Wen). Of the meats, chicken is of the pungent flavour which concord's with the lung. It is expelling in nature as most pungent flavours.
There are some minerals and herbs which work well in Homeopathic doses such as Ferrum Phosphate and Belladonna also Allium Cepa(onion) Aconite, Euphrasia, Echinacia, Bryonia, etc. These need to be prescribed on an individual basis as colds are all a bit different.
But some Ferrum Phos 6x( Iron Phosphate) with a whiskey and lemon juice can do wonders.Add the pungents as food of course Chicken and also curries). Plenty of water as well. Some teas as well.
Rest is the best way to go about all this stuff.

I'm not entirely sure if there is a way to get over a cold any more quickly than what your immune system is capable of however there is history behind chicken soup being a good remedy for the symptoms of a cold. As raven stated there is also the possibility of using ferrum phosphate, belladonna, onion, etc. These only treat the symptoms - and do not treat the illness itself. Please remember that. One word of caution though regarding some herbs such as belladonna. In fact - specifically belladonna since it was mentioned. Belladonna is an herb that acts as a depressant. It can cause drowsiness, induced sleep and in large enough quantities death. I've never seen this myself but my family doctor had mentioned this to me while we where out at lunch. My doctor is also a good friend of mine - no I don't just take my doctors out to lunch... well I might if I that doctor meets certain requirements... Anyway just be careful and remember one word - moderation. Oh I did find out one thing - hot tubs are fantastic for helping to relieve the symptoms of the common cold and flu. Not only that but after a long day its always good to lounge about in a hot tub with a tumbler full of whiskey or scotch on the rocks. Sadly I can't do that every night since I don't own the hot tub and am at the mercy of my friend.

Yep, Heaps of vitamim C. I forgot. Too much whiskey as a preventative measure I must have been consuming. You need to be proactive.
That Jameson just works a treat! I wouldn't know If I had a cold if I keep the levels up.

Ny-quil sucks now that they've taken the good stuff out of it. (Too many kids were using it to get high)
There's a Brazilian herb called Yerba Mate that one makes into a tea. I usually mix it with dried mint leaves. Steep the tea for 10 minutes, add as much honey as you can stand, and mix in a shot of brandy. drink it piping hot. Does a body good.

Old trick from a friend of mine: don't eat supper, two aspirin and a double dose of cognac. I was desperate enough to try it once and ended up being cured the next morning but with a hangover from hell... Hey, nothing is perfect, right?

The simplest cure ever: drink 8 onces of water per hour, on the hour, for one day. IT WORKS!

Heh - maybe the symptoms of the hangover just masked the symptoms of the cold? lol I wouldn't notice having a cold either if I had a hangover from hell. Of course I wouldn't be mixing an analgesic and alcohol anyway.

And since I wasn't really "sick" I just had a bit of a runny nose, I don't really count it.

It seems that the scientist studied the effects of chicken soup and found that chickens have a natural immune system against the common cold or slight flue, they are related to the massive flue, the feet of the chicken have the anti virus stuff in them and thats what gives the soup its chicken flavor! So they identified what helps fight the cold/flue in chicken soup!

I attack it head-on, just like I do everything else.
Lots of fluids combined with multivitamins, echinacea, lots of vitamin C and B, lysine (to prevent cold sores), soaking in hot baths and DRUGS.

First, I eats a handful of hot coal gravel - then immerses meself in molten lava while smacking the back of me head with a billy-bat to facilitate the extrusion of the infirmity. Then I washes thoroughly in heavily garlic'd cold chicken soup before slipping into a warm bottle o' scotch. Start the next day with a bit of leftover haggis; puke me guts out, and I'm right as rain on a Spring morn. No disease would dare get next to that!

Onions an garlic are good for sore throats, so is turmeric, as they kill bacteria on contact (If I'm not mistaken, I know turmeric does, I get over a sore throat in 1 day with that stuff). Some people actually gargle vinegar, I don't like to, ut it also kills bactieria on contact and is used to prevent colds.
Actually, my immune system would be better, but when you are allergic to 10 (10 if you count tree nuts, I always counted 9 because I just counted peanuts and tree nuts) things and have asthma, it is hard to stay in top condition. Usually I get sick every 6 months or so, but recently I've been sick much more often.
I have 2 dogs, and I am allergic to dogs, and my house is dusty as hell despite the cleaning we do, and I'm allergic to dust! Jeez.
