I can't really offer any working ideas that I've used. I finally had my first cold in my life and it was Miserable and then it mutated into something else, which then turned into a sinus infection which turned into something else before finally going away 2 days after I got to Alaska. Took about 6 weeks, all told.
hmmm, Extreme cold and low humidity? That'll clear all the mucus out of your sinuses for sure (this is something I used to do to sinus infections...)
Breathing steam is also supposed to help open your sinuses and it costs less than a shower...
edit: Oh! And aspirin increases the acidity in your blood and large amounts of vitamin C will cause you to wash out anything in your intestines, bladder, kidneys or liver. LARGE amounts of vita C, I mean. Like 2k plus milligrams per dose... I use these on just about everything I get except sinus infections. It doesn't help those (and that's what I get the most)...

Wow, you mean thre is actually scientific evidence for that? I've always gargled vinegarin the morning before I brush my teeth, then brush, then use mouthwash...
I've always felt vinegar killed germs but I'd never had any evidence for it, thanks.

I rarely get sick, maybe once or twice a year but when I do get a cold I have it for a solid couple of weeks. Now I don't like garlic much but If you take a couple toes of it, cut it up into little chunks and swallow em like pills a few times a day....cold is gone after a day or two or at least the symptoms are drastically reduced.... the longest it ever took after I did this was 3 days. Good luck and don't breathe on me!

As per Dr. Granny Clampett - "Take Granny's corn squeezin's three times a day, stay in bed, drink lots of fluids, and in about a week to ten days, you'll be right as rain!"

As the title suggests, how do you get over the common cold? www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/CategoryDisplay?cgmenbr=201614&cgrfnbr=204130"HERBA TUSSIN" works like a charm for me.Almost any store has this particular brand. Try to drink a lot of hot tea ( green, black, red or white ) during the day, before a bedtime take one cup of tee with a couple of tea spoons of raw honey , after that go to the bed immediately and cover yourself with heavy blanket. Whale sleeping, your body will naturally lose all toxins and microbes, because of perspiration. Repeat it for couple of days, and you will be fine. Take a vitamin C ( 500-1000ml ) everyday after meal, it will speed up a recovery. Get well soon ;D

Wow, you mean thre is actually scientific evidence for that? Nothing he posted looked anything like scientific evidence. Take a looky here: highwire.org/cgi/medline/pmid;10656352 and here: highwire.org/cgi/medline/pmid;9209126Also take into account the experiments are not showing the results of just swishing the vinegar around, or wiping it on a surface. These tests show immersion of the bacteria in the substance. Real disinfectants work better and quicker. Vinegar will not kill germs on contact. Even the best disinfectants take time. The problem with threads like these is that people will offer up any number of garbage recommendations - they don't have support in science. My offer to show salvatore evidence based treatments still stands, however, he seems to have an aversion to modern medicine and won't provide a definition of it so I can work around it.

I haven't provided you an explanation because I haven't been on. Simple. How do you think I define it? Something that won't have an adverse affect on my freakin' organs! I don't like to take painkiller, meds to control asthma or allergies or anything man-made essentially. I usually will use it only if I have to, in which case I will usually go for something that is grown (i.e, turmeric, garlic, onions etc. They work for me, if they don't work you, fine in every aspect). Yes, nothing I said is "scientific evidence", but there is no need to be rude about it... Sal

Vitamins are man made... chicken soup is man made... drugs in sensible doses will not have adverse effects on your organs. I'm afraid I really can't help you. Ok man, since your better on the computor than me, look up the study about the efects of chickin soup on fighting the commen cold, I read about it a few years ago, its there I just dont know how to find it with the quickness, and Its not garbage!!! There are quite a few papers on the area and there does seem to be a positive effect of chicken soup on the recovery from the cold (the evidence is not strong, but the evidence for some effect on the immune system is... just what that effect does on recovery is not known yet), however, as one might expect there are quite a few recipes around (which makes finding out what works and what doesn't difficult) and there is at least one study where when testing the components it seems like the properties are actually in the vegetables. Highwire is down at the moment so I can't link to it, unfortunately.

I have some growing right next to my spagetti tree. 4 chicken thighs boiled in a 4-5 quart pot of water, laced heavily with powdered garlic and chopped fresh onion (with a bit of basil & parsley) has done wonders for most colds (not the flu - for that I go get penicillin - I'm not allergic), since I was a child. I have helped to cure friends with the same for many, many years. Of course, I also eat balanced meals with fresh vegetables while I am ill (vitamins). I apologize if my earlier attempt at humor was not well received. It seemed SanMarc was already well aware of chicken soup, and there's nothing much else for it. I find it hard to take a request for medical advice too seriously on a sword forum - unless it has to do with cuts and ensuing infections... so I tend to look to Monty Python in such situations. In all my years, if nothing else - I have learned that testing proves testing works.Taking studies at face value can be dangerous (especially on the Net), since we all have variations in our physical make-up that can often cause very different results. I have casually studied homeopathic remedies (with great interest) for a big part of my life, because early experience with doctors (I was a sickly child) caused me to have little trust for the medical community - but great reverence for a good, compassionate, skilled doctor. I have also lived long enough to see friends and relatives die or become permanently injured at the hands of a quack with a signed waiver. Nor do I have praise for an idiot with a book on home remedies that freely hands out strong advice (btw - I am not referring to anyone who has posted here). There - I got my rant out. Now go eat some chicken soup, and if you don't feel better shortly - get yourself to a doc. Feel better and get well, SanMarc!

origional Buckly's mixture. it tastes horrible and smells like turpentine but it destroys colds! I swear by it. but I think you can only get it in Canada.
contains no alcohol or pharmaceutical drugs either.
