Well, again, after a few setbacks I am finally able to bring you another instructional video. And I use the word instructional very loosely. This video centers on how to throw an axe backwards, and also why you would need to do so in a competition. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask. Hey, who knows, I realize that this is a sword forum, but maybe if enough people get involved, we might get our own board So without furher adieu, I give you the second installment to Beast of Burden Enterprises' instructional axe throwing series "the Backwards 7 video." ;D P.S. Watch it all the way to the end, I had 1 miss throw and put it in a blooper reel. Please forgive the quality of the video, I expect to get a new camera soon. Well, thats about it, Hope ya'll like it! ;D

I'm watching it on youtube those first throws are fricken awesome dude, +1 for that alone!
EDIT, finished watching the video, Very good video! Once I move out to my grandma's old house in January I'll be able to set up a proper target and actually be able to throw without breaking the scenery and my Tomahawks for that matter. Are your Tomahawks any particular brand, were they bought online?

Are your Tomahawks any particular brand, were they bought online? I have a total of seven 'hawks. The two I use in the video are my favorites. The first 1 I throw in the opening is an old cold steel. Its similar to thier rifleman, but without the hammer knob on the back. I dont think its available anymore, which is a shame. The second is actually my dads axe. I'm not sure who makes it, but I saw it in a cataloge not too long ago, although I cant remember where. My other 5 are all made by Pete Allan of Allan foundries. He's been making 'hawks for over 50 years, and is well into his eighties. Sadly he will soon quit and his axes will no longer be available. If you're looking for a great axe, then look no further.

Thanks for the info, I came across the allan foundries tomahawks while I was looking for a cheaper place to buy the cold steel ones I got, which happens to have been bought from a place in harmony N.C btw. My birthday's coming up, I think I know what to ask for I'd enjoy seeing photos of your collection.

Harmony, you say...., I wonder if those once belonged to a student of mine. An old student recently sold his whole collection of weapons to pay for school. I dont recall him having trailhawks, but he may have.
I'll try to post pics of mine soon. BTW, I look forward to your move, maybe you can shoot a vid of your throws. ;D Its always nice to see someone elses technique.

Very cool! Must...resist...urge...to start...another...hobby. Hey, look at it this way, its a hobby that cost 50 bucks to do, and you dont have to spend a cent more if you dont want to. You cant go to a bar one night and have a good time for less. Besides its good stress relief!!

Indeed, I find myself playing with my tomahawks more than any of the three katanas I have.

Well I've been ignoring this thread on purpose for a few days (because my fiancee had packed away all my throwing weapons and I was loathe to have to move boxes and boxes of stuff to get at them) for fear of the desire to throw again. I usually cease such activities in winter since I don't have a location to do that in cold weather.
Anyway +1 on the videos. I've thrown axes the way you demonstrated in this video but I never considered throwing it backwards. Honestly I was envisioning you standing with your back to the target and well, you know... throwing backwards lol.
I do agree on the fact that throwing weapons is much less expensive than tameshigiri. Provided you don't damage your handles you can throw and throw and throw... without incurring any real cost. Tameshigiri on the other hand is costly if you consider having to purchase targets etc...
If I could (without freezing - see I'm a real wimp when it comes to winter) I would throw every day all year round.

Yeah, it can cost a little bit to get started, what with busted handle and all. and trust me I've had handles held together with duct tape ;D But hey, a replacement handles only around 5 bucks, so its still pretty cheap. I agree with the whole freezing thing, I enjoy throwing, but I like to feel my hands and toes more.

So I was just outside about an hour ago trying this backwards 7. I wish I had caught it on tape because it was awesome, but I throw underneath a metal awning type thing and my fingers were getting really cold from being out there for so long and so when I threw, the axe slipped out of my hand early and hit one of the 2X4s that span the length of the awning, so the axe itself reversed rotation and stuck into the target. lol it was a very satisfying mistake! Needless to say I now need new handles from missing so many throws today, concrete eats wooden handles like candy.

lol, I can honestly say in all my years of throwing, that has never happened. Very nice. ;D As far as handles, shop around, but make sure you get the right length. Some catalouges advertise cheap prices and only give a pic., no length. last time I looked smokey mountain knife works had 18' handles for $4.99 plus S&H. That was awhile ago.
Edit: Look up crazycrow.com They have handles now for $4.25 plus S&H. Nice axes too!

lol 18 FOOT HANDLES?!?!
I started cracking up when it happened, it was absolutely killer seeing it happen though it blew my mind.
I'll check out those places you mentioned, I don't really like cold steel's handles, they feel really...crusty.
