Maybe there's a psychological effect of blades with a mean stabby tip, a gladius has much of it, Bowies too. Oh, a lot, I mean A LOT of bad things stopped happening and the bad guy vamoosed because of the mere brandishing of a nasty blade, but ya can't count on it due to insanity, drugs and guns...sometimes bad guy having all three. Also, if the perp has a gun, you do risk, under certain conditions, ending up like "the sword guy" in Indiana Jones And The Lost Ark".

Or there could be a group of them, with some knowing how to counter blades, esp. larger single edged ones. I know of one incident where a guy was lynched by a group in a certain location, he had a Randal Bowie, but he never got to use it, in fact his own throat was almost slit...they guy was big and strong, but others had to come to the rescue in the end....I spoke to him and he gave me all the details....details available via PM.

That would be one crazy group, and with an almost personal single minded determination in order to mess with a stranger minding his own business carrying a large bowie. I personally would worry, if I pulled a large blade, more about someone then pulling a gun and shooting me. Suppose anything can happen in the mean streets. I do know I would have to have a real big reason before I messed with a dude with a big blade, but there are maniacs out there, I suppose.

When you're confronted with a group of psychotic drug influenced maniacs with Gatling guns even a 0.50 Desert Eagle isn't sufficient.

You need to bust out of your Anti-gun stance and find a nice old Walther on the better EU action sites, your world will only get more crazy, peace is not coming anytime soon. I say this because I care.

That's not how it works here, germany specifically you need to be a shooting club member for a while to be able to buy a gun. It's a big hassle if you aren't really into it! Also the reason why so little bad guys have firearms, you would need to smuggle illegal guns a long way. Not that it does not happen, but it's a big hurdle for the normal criminal.
I guess that's also the reason repeating crossbows get the "home defense" advertisement from some sellers.
EDIT: howler: Yeah, intimidation is also a factor quite often. I don't know why, but a hammer just does not look as intimidating as a clip point bowie, maybe because the hammer is an everyday object? Same can be said for kitchen knives I guess, kitchen knives have ended many lifes though...

I grew up with a Walther PPK 7,65 mm my father had. Not shooting with it, but I kept it when my parents were on holidays, when I was old enough. So no fear of guns, but I prefer living in a relatively disarmed society. (Which means compared to the average citizen or the average intruder I'm highly armed ) Slingshots?

A good slingshot can be quite powerful, but it has the same drawbacks as the crossbows I think. How about peppering the intruder with plumbata first? Maybe a gladius and a small roman shield with plumbata on the inside. Everybody is afraid of a nude guy with roman weapons, or is it just me?
Thinking about it, now I want need a small shield....

Plumbata, yeah, no one ever thinks of them! A big Spanish main gauche (Windlass Musketeer) is a buckler combined with a dagger and mean long quillons (for the eyes/neck). With a Mainz gladius, a main gauche and a belt full of plumbatae you can even face a mnigun, haha!

Tod has a few nice videos on plumbata, they might not be deadly but quite nasty. I think your fighting potential might be lowered quite a bit with a few of these weighted barbs are hanging onto you. Moving would likely hurt a lot and pulling out is very destructive. I just got this video suggestion from youtube, highly suspicious

Edit: I have been filled in with more details, and it's not pretty...time to make friends with the Turkish merchants.

Yes they are dangerous, and potentially deadly...it was ( is?) very common for thugs ( and others) to carry a sharpened screwdriver ( basically a "Shank" / Stiletto) in places where they had a chance to be frisked or guns were not easy to get ( say NYC).

Same can be said for kitchen knives I guess, kitchen knives have ended many lifes though... It is psychological, as humans are often more afraid of being stabbed than shot, something about permanent disfiguring cuts, like to the face. Also, many might thing the bad guy "just won't pull the trigger", but might slice in a non lethal area. Or maybe it's just that knives have been around so long it's in our DNA.
