There's several things to consider. Most importantly, penetration: obviously the rapier is phenomenal at penetration, and is quite long (always a positive thing). However, while some rapiers can be quite stiff, others are too flexible and floppy for proper thrusting, which can lead to embarrassing situations. A flaccid sword is a sad thing indeed. The longsword is usually thicker than a rapier - some are quite girthy - and this can help make your weapon much stiffer, which obviously helps enormously when you're trying to stick your sword deep into someone's body. That said, there are some longswords that suffer from a lack of rigidity, to their owner's great shame. All that said, it's not always about what kind of weapon you have, it's how you use it. But who do you really think takes more skill and is more effective, the longsword or the rapier? I think the rapier.

I'm not a hema master but afaik longswords in duel need more skills than rapiers in duel, perhaps this was one of the reasons rapiers became common. Please explain this. As far as I know, rapiers take more finesse than longswords especially in duels. What is your proof for this?

Imho mastering longsword needs more skills because there are more ways to attack and defend than a rapier has. In a duel the rapier user needs more skills than the longsword user to fight effectively because he has less ways to attack and defend. And as I mentioned before, we talk about 4 or 5 % of all fighting skills needed with melee weapons.

What is your proof for this? rapiers you outrange most enemies and the pob is relatively close to the handle so its rather easy to move around. In fact id say most experienced longsword users wouldnt have that hard of a time against the average rapier duelist because the average rapier duelist only has experience fighting other rapier duelists
