It would be great if Windlass improved their Munich cut and thrust sword! That sword is just too dang THICK! 🤦

Great news, very promising. Ordered one yesterday. Will probably take some time here in Germany. My main concerns with the Windlass are the durability of the knuckle guard and sharpness/edge angle. We’ll see. Markus, may I ask if it was in stock when your ordered? Thanks!

I just ordered one of these and would like a sword knot to go with it. Does anyone know what knot would be reasonable historically correct one?

I got lucky and was on Youtube when Matt Easton's video about the 1796 came through. About 3 minutes in, I was on Atlanta Cutlery's site and ordering. They sold out very quickly. In short, it's pretty much exactly as Matt described. Absolutely excellent. They got it the same as the prototype. Mine measures right between 5/16" and 3/8" at the guard, about 1/8" at the midpoint, and just over 1/16" near the point. The edge came sharp, but not a razor (needs a tiny bit of work on a Work Sharp with a fine belt), and was sharpened nearly the full length of the blade. The swedge is sharpened up the spine nearly a foot as well, which I didn't expect but was happily surprised to see. Weight is 30.2 oz. It handles wonderfully. Much faster and lighter than I expected. I practiced several cutting drills with it, and it seems as advertised. I'm a relative newbie with blades over parang or machete-length, but this makes me a believer in the 1796. It's a fearsome meat cleaver for sure, and Windlass knocked this one out of the park. Gonna have to get some tatami mats and water bottles and start cutting. I can't spot any flaws in the construction. They did a very good job. Flex is as shown in Easton's video, and the scabbard is also well made. Given the weight of the sheath and the fact that it's very hard to draw the blade from it without dulling one edge or the other, I may try making a wooden sheath wrapped in leather for it to live in. Sorry for the crappy pics. I just couldn't get a decent shot with my phone.

Thank you for your impressions and photos. That’s a good looking sword.
I’m glad it turned out to be as advertised.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for your input. It sounds like the sword/scabbard fit it much like I had imagined. I suspect that I’ll display mine in a wall rack out of the scabbard as I have done with my other steel scabbard swords. That’s something I don’t like doing but find necessary to protect the edge. Unfortunately, inflation has shut my buying down for the moment.

Wow, great pictures, Wasatchdan, thanks for posting. Crisp fuller lines on that saber, nice foible. 30.2 oz. Very promising. Really makes me look forward to mine.

So jealous, Wasatchdan! I ordered within a few hours of the video and it was already sold out.

So jealous, Wasatchdan! I ordered within a few hours of the video and it was already sold out. That’s disappointing. They probably had a small trial batch to see how sales would go. I have no doubt there will be more, the question is when? Inflation here has dropped from 13 to 8% so more under control and I had hoped to order early next year, which is only a week away. Now the waiting game in earnest.

Just placed the order for one. Now for the 4+ week wait. Also bought the closeout Fisted War Hammer ( www.museumreplicas.com/fisted-war-hammer ) but don't know if they will ship the in stock item now or if it will all wait and go in the same box.

Perhaps it’s not too late to ask that they be shipped together to save on shipping costs, if that is your desire. Have the order number handy if doing so.

From their confirmation email (about 5-10 minutes after my post above), they should be shipping the in stock hammer now. Since the 1796 LC could be 2-3 months out, I wouldn't want to have the hammer delayed and then discover they sold the last one before my order is finally scheduled to ship. Since it is a closeout, they probably don't have many left. I think the shipping cost is the same either way.
