Dune just finished airing. It's something I've been waiting to watch forever. Now I've seen it.
Impressions? It was good. Very good. But it wasn't good everywhere. I wanted more of a psychic angle - humans evolving into a higher state of consciousness. Somewhat covered in the movie, but more prominent in the book.
I'm curious to know how Paul Maud'Dib felt? With a handle like that, one must have an opinion.

Am going to see at the theater Saturday. First movie since the pandemic at the theater. Hell, last movie I saw at the theater was the Star Wars movie where Han Solo’s son killed him. Oh semprinni, did I just give a spoiler!?! Anyway have been saving this one. Was going to start a thread about it but guess I don’t have to do that now. Thanks, a lot!. Haha. Already have some preconceived ideas about it but have seen things in trailers and screenshots I like. I’ve said for awhile it’s going to be a mixed bag. But, and I mean BUT! it has to be so far above the previous two iterations. But then the bar was set pretty low.

There is a thread in the cafe. Watched it the other day. Think of it as a reboot of the old three part miniseries with John Hurt as Duke Leto. This current film will be part 1. sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/65686/duneThere is nothing very medieval about it, one might beg to wonder why fiction fantasy was posted here.

I thought putting it here was strange also Glen. But just went with it. Figure mods will move it to the cafe.

Yeah, the cafe would be more appropriate. I was thoroughly in my cups when I posted this thread.

Watched it last night, and my favorite scenes again just now. Been a fan (original books and various media) since teens. I freakin' loved it. Favorite aspects (without spoiling):
- What the film chose to focus on, and how it was portrayed, to me, captured the essence of what I love about this totally messed-up story. Like a shamanic journey amidst a crumbling universe.
- The crazy warrior-cult semprini of the Sardaukar was super badass. One particular scene, about a minute long, was one of the most bizarre and captivating I can think of. Think 'Apocalypse Now' evolves into a warrior society 8,000 years in the future.

I thought the overall production was well done, with updated effects and cgi. The machines kewl and costuming well fitted. As an extended first trilogy, these will be some three hours more than the 2000 mini series that ran 90 minutes or so per episode. I guess one could call this lavish. I was a bit into an agricole swizzler last night as well. Put the lime in the coconut and drink em all up Cheers GC

I watched it again. This time %100 sober, and with the closed captioning turned on. I got out lot more out of it. I'm gonna watch it again.
You're in for a treat, Paul Maud'Dib, when you see this today on the big screen.

False alarm. The 2:15 showing is 3d. Last movie (only movie) I saw in 3d was ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ on tv about 40 years ago. No thanks. Got ticket for 4:40 show.

I don't know what time zone you're in. But I suspect you're about to have your mind blown. Eastern. So another hour and forty minutes plus previews. May wait until tomorrow to post something. I like a movie to percolate for awhile before making a final judgement. Am looking forward to it though.

Ok. Thought about doing a kind of intro about me and why these books were important to me. Then I sobered up and figured you guys would find that boring. So on to the movie. Promise no spoilers.
What I liked. The whole production. The cinematography, sets (except one, remember no spoilers), cgi, etc. The scale of everything was excellent. In the books they describe the equipment, buildings, cities as massive and the film delivers. As good a depiction of sandworms as I’ve seen. The ornithopters were close to perfection for me. Saw an artist’s concept drawing back in the day that had them looking like dragonflies. Someone involved in the film must have seen that drawing.
Casting: Paul was very good. Leto, good actor, never pictured Leto with a beard though. Jessica, don’t think I know the actress but she did a good job. Character did a lot of crying which in book she didn’t. Worry yes but not crying, iirc. Gurney, Brolin just didn’t work for me. He’s a good actor but I always pictured Gurney as a kind of stocky guy with a bit of a gut (but not out of shape) somewhat unattractive, some might say ugly. Duncan, I like Mamoa but I really pictured him more like Henry Cavill. But think Mamoa’s personality fit the character. The Harkonens, good casting but where’s the red hair?! Don’t think that’s a spoiler, the trailer has been out awhile. Stilgar should be skinnier. Everyone else that I can think of right now was ok.
Costumes: Stilsuits were good but did look a bit like armor in places. Sardukar we’re close to what I imagined. Some others were very lavish ones in places but not the god awful stuff of the last two iterations.
Of course they couldn’t put every detail of the book in the movie but thought they could have done better in some details. The most notable for me was the fight scene between Paul and Janis. Was in completely the wrong setting. Don’t think it would have been a huge deal to make a set like it was in the book. Especially considering the money spent on the movie.
Ok, here’s where I might get into trouble. Liet Kynes was a man. I’ll repeat that for you in the back of the room. Liet Kynes was a MAN. Also Channi’s father. Oh yeah, thought Zendaya was perfect casting. I know Hollywood and society has this whole thing about women and minorities not being represented. And they are right. It’s been bad for, well forever. But I’m not into the whole let’s change a character’s sex or race to appease some people. And I don’t really want to get into race changing. On the Witcher thread someone complained about that and was accused of passive racism. So I’m just not going to say more about it here.
I will say that I think the movie got the overall flavor of the book right. I hope it makes enough money to get the second one made. Not going to hold my breath for numbers 2-4. That’s right, I agree with ZenHydra on this one. There are four books that are Dune. Last two I’m not sure what Herbert was thinking.
Anyway, just remember LoE, you did ask.

OH DAMN! I forgot the most important part. The swords, DUH! They sucked! The Sardukar swords looked like mall ninja pos’s. Because I think the actually were. They went for the tacticool lol for everyone’s swords. I get it, it shows better on the screen for the average person watching. From the book: ‘Halleck dropped the weapons on the exercise table, lined them up-the rapiers, the bodkins, the kindjals, the slow-pellet stunners, the shield belts.’ But what you going to do? Crisknives, too long imo. Again from the book: ‘A black handle with deep finger ridges protruded from it. She took sheath in one hand and handle in the other, withdrew a milk-white blade, held it up. The blade seemed to shine and glitter with a light of its own. It was double-edged like a kindjal and the blade was perhaps twenty centimeters long.’ In the movie they looked about 30 cm.
Will say they did a good job depicting the shields. Kind of like the way they changed color. Wouldn’t have thought of that myself. Can’t think of anything else right now. Besides, it’s time for my Sunday afternoon nap. Haha.

There was a ton of little tidbits that were wrong. Many of which you pointed out with a very astute and detailed eye. The changes that were made were not necessary. The things that were accurate were sometimes not well portrayed.
But some of the changes I actually preferred though. The single piece that rubbed me wrong the most was the weakness of Jessica. She was hard as steel in the books. I didn't think it was necessary to weaken her so much. The movie didn't even hint at Jessica's suspicions or thoughts many times. Where was Lady Margo & Count Fenring? Feyd-Rautha?
Regarding Leto, I never thought of him with a beard either. But I liked it. It was one of those things I just hadn't imagined that way. Duncan I never saw that way either, but again I liked it. Gurney to me had the right feel, but the wrong look. Stilgar felt wrong mostly. The stuff they added into the story for Jamis I liked a lot. Chani blew my doors off. Paul was perfect!
I loved the shields. The ornithopters. The Sardaukar. The hugeness of it all.
But man oh man. It was an incredible movie. I LOVED IT. It met my expectations, exceeded them by a good bit. I can't wait for the extended cut.
Or the next one.
