I, like many others, would love a custom detailed leather wrapped scabbard for my more expensive swords. I believe they are worth the money, it is just hard for me to not spend money on more swords than an expensive scabbard.
So I have been making them myself. Just a simple poplar scabbard using two 1/4 in. x 4 in. x 3 ft. Poplar Boards.
The 3 on the right I threw together. The one on the left was originally orange dyed leather and came with the used Albion Stamford.
Making the scabbard for the Thegn. Using a router, jig saw, calipers, wood glue and a 1" belt sander.

I saw your scabbards in another thread and was admiring them there, so thank you for posting this as well. The work is excellent and I dig your collection of Albion Vikings.
Do you use any chisels or just a router? Have you experimented with any linings? Are you going to try your hand with leather?

I only used a router. The first two did I took my time with and made more measurments and depth changes than this last one, which I only did 2. Therefore the first two have a more snug and consistent feel to them. The last one I was more interested in getting it done faster because of time constraints. The first two I worked more on the inside, where the last one I did a much better job on the outside. It is more rounded and less blocky than the others.
I have not had the courage yet to do linings or a leather cover yet. Leather working was never a strength of mine.. I might send them to someone to do a leather cover, not sure.

Man this almost justifies a router for me, these look fantastic. My dremel has a router attachment! I can think of a dozen reasons for justifying buying a dremel. They are one of the most handy power tools out there. So if you're willing to invest in one, you can buy the router attachment later.

I was looking at a Dremel not too long ago, thinking it would be useful to sharpen my spear, with its sanding attachment, or to shorten my gsow an inch or two with the cutting disks

It would be interesting to see if the router attachment on the Dremel can handle that much cutting. If you do it let me know. I have ended up using the router for other things, but I bought it for scabbards.

I was surprised at the different belts you can get for them. Have sharpened a few Windlass spears and swords and cleaned up a number of axe blades that came to me butter knife sharp.

Yea I'm still considering getting one. Or even trying to see if my brother let's me use his. My windlass spear makes a butter knife seem sharp, but I managed to get a point on it

Have used a dremel for years. You can get a router bit for them and they do work. But the amount you would need to router out for most scabbards would take a lot of time and effort and patience. And I mean a LOT. It’s just not as powerful as a router. I suggest getting a small router and would definitely recommend a plunge router but that isn’t absolutely necessary. Dremels are great for a lot of things, I use mine professionally and for hobbies.

I've used mine to make grips, which are much smaller and comparatively easier.

I don't own I router (I don't count the Dremel as a 'real' router, even with the router table attachment), so I use chisels, rasps and files. Just bought 2 of the offset handle chisels, but haven't tried them yet. This month, my crafting time is mostly focused on leather work.
I've made 4 wooden scabbards, but for knives instead of swords. They range from ~9" to 14" blades. Still need to leather wrap 1 and make the attachment harness (frogs or hangers) for 3 of them. 2 were made of good wood and will be left with the wood exposed (Walnut and Red Oak to match the grip material). I'll post pictures when I get them done.

So The conundrum we all face...

That conundrum is part of the reason I'm learning the art of making leather covered wood scabbards. I figure for every 2 scabbards I make, I just saved myself enough money to order a new Albion.

Almost done. Just need to find a stain to go with the handle colors.
