I am planning on making these same scabbards for my Albions, but the one question standing out in my mind is whether the wood marrs the blade at all after repeated use. Do you notice any scratches or marking of the blade, especially near the guard or the point? Is it ok to repeatedly sheath and draw your sword from an unlined wood scabbard? I use a router to carve out the blade channel and light grit sandpaper after. I have also usually put a bit of light CLP oil in the channel. The oil the blade. Or I have waxed the blade. I have not had any permanent marks on the blades using poplar wood. Just have to reapply oil or wax after awhile. I make sure there is a fairly smooth channel with no left over grit from the sandpaper.

Have you ever thought of trying Peter Johnsson's veneer method? I find it to be an absolute game changer! The scabbards are thinner, lighter, have a much better fit and are much easier to make. www.bladesmithsforum.com/index.php?/topic/36723-making-a-scabbard-with-a-veneer-core/I started off by using wood and carving out the blade profile with chisels, but my last two have been with veneer (slats of model aircraft plywood glued together and moulded around the blade) and I have not looked back.

I will take a second look at that again. I would have to buy more tools and many more clamps lol.

That's the great thing about it. But yes, you are right, clamps are the essential tool! I now have a drawer full of them!

I had this Albion Gaddhjalt on the Classifieds wanting to trade it. Once I received another chape I realized it would only fit the Gaddhjalt scabbard core I made so......

Looks great! I've been having good success with 3mm birch plywood (it is cheap and available near me and I dont have to plane it down, $10 for 12"x60"x1/8" is a pretty good deal) and trying various methods of soaking/heating/steaming the plywood. Took measurements and calculated the angles from 165 to 147 (rounded up) the bend needs to be for my blades as well. Typically I give myself about an 8/9mm wide "seam allowance" on either side when forming, clipping the edges so it forms around the blade more nicely too, glued, and then given a more final shape by hand when I am satisfied. You can go narrower on the edges if you do the layers of linen+hide glue as well since that'll really reinforce it. That linen wrap really is crucial, it almost makes the leather seem irrelevant but part of a scabbard is to show off and that's where the leather and tooling really comes in!

How do you get these intricate caps for the scabbard? are they cast or do you make them from sheet metal?

I buy all of the bronze and brass buckles, end tabs, chapes for scabbard ends and strap dividers. I do not make them. Wish I had that kind of talent. I buy them from Pera Peris website and on Etsy. And Northern Traders on Etsy. So far both have been good sellers. Though they are not in the US and shipping can take time. This allows me to slow down and take my time with planning things.

Ah, cool. I have a few scabbards planned, but did never start since I didn't know what to do about fittings. I have one without metal fittings and there is just something not right that way. So I guess you buy the fittings and build the scabbard to fit them, right? I think I will try making these parts myself some day, plain metal ones. Or do you have a source for these?
Not going anywhere near your level, just plain scabbards.

These are 2 that I have used. I have made all of my wood scabbard cores before I started putting leather and fittings on them. Basically just made wood storage scabbards. So I have to shape all the wood cores much later to fit the fittings to a mixed result. Next one I will do will be to start with the fittings.
