It all began when I saw Purna Darnal's profile picture with a viking sword. Having seen his work in my hand, I naturally had to order a custom sword too. (Brother Nathaniel, thanks are given to you. ) It began like this : Having opted for a pattern welded blade, he actually had to make charcoal from scratch before doing anything. I let him choose the actual pattern. Then came the carvings : wood for scabbard and handle, brass for guard and pommel. He does all carvings/engravings by hand, it's crazy. (It was what actually took the most time, so much that he had to take a break and make new tools from scratch too...) Overall, it took him a month (I don't know how to put videos but on the linked Facebook page kind of blurry video, I really like how the lighting was reflected on the pattern-welded blade. When he showed me on Messenger, it felt...Magic). It is in his own words the hardest work he made yet but he really relished the challenge and opportunity. It should be ready for the end of the week, probably for Christmas Day.

Awesome! I knew it was one of our forum peeps who was getting this, just couldn't figure out who, it looks amazing! I can't wait to see your impressions when it arrives.

Awesome! Would love to know how much it cost, so we can have an idea of what we would need to commission something similar.

Incredible work. Can he peen or file down those pins on the pommel/guard section? Everything about this is so great apart from that tiny detail.

Are you talking about the absolutely atrocious hex nuts and screws connecting the two pommel pieces? I really hope it doesn't ship out like that... Not a huge fan of the damascus pattern, but otherwise looks like a fantastic sword with a whole lot of hours put into it.

Not a huge fan of the damascus pattern, but otherwise looks like a fantastic sword with a whole lot of hours put into it. It's my fault actually. Let's just say that I know nothing about viking sword/pommel and couldn't guide or help Purna at all. He's been willing to try but had to base his first time working on this kind of project on pictures searched on the Internet. So, it's kind of a mix-and-match thing really. (The theme was "From the Sanctuary carved in Trees (Kashta Mandapa/Katmandu), Durga destroys all distress (Durge Durgati Nashini)", so something with a more "primordial organic" feel, not historical) The screws things are due to me not wanting him to redo the whole process (it wasn't his first try for the buttcap/guard and he wasn't sure how to tackle it). I don't think he casts his fittings (others might have more information than me) and he's been carving non-stop for more than a month already and the problem happened during Christmas (literally). So, blame's on me. On the good side, the screws don't actually bother me that much (I'll see when I receive it ? ). In the worst case, there might be some way to "cover them up" with some caps (kind of like on the Fetter Lane ?). Perhaps more importantly...now I can "end them rightly". (yeah, not historical at all )

Those hex nuts are going to be uncomfortable in the hand, I think. Where is the peen on this sword? Underneath the pommel? If so, you can remove those hex nuts, unscrew the pins, and fasten everything back with epoxy and file the pins down to be flush with the guard. Those pins are just there to keep the pommel in place and cover the peen.

That is... jarring. But nice carving.

I know he didn't do any casting for the metal parts, but I think that's amazing. I wish I could see his process. Is he creating each of the hilt pieces separately and then weld them together, like a braising technique? Also, the wood carving is AWESOME.

Those nuts are bad, but the delams are what worried me more.

Those nuts are bad, but the delams are what worried me more. Delams? Delaminations in the pattern welded steel, visible in the first picture... No offense to the smith, I love the carvings and how he did the broad fuller, but I would NOT send this sword out to a customer.

Are the delams by the edge of the blade is that what I am seeing?
