The thread should focus more on not taking offense so easily. Stating a historical fact is being a prick now? Historically speaking France has a rich warrior history and has been perhaps the United States staunchest ally. So the whole dig a the French is not accurate or funny. Friends should be able to rib each other To no individual in particular, calm down people. You're grown men getting your feathers ruffled by a teenager on the internet. It's not a sign of maturity to enter poor form because someone who is literally physiologically *not done maturing* said something that you need respond in a rant. That is the problem on this forum, not newer people who post a lot without having as much knowledge as those who post less.. lead by example and shut up.

I will make sure to never share any "French, German, British, Italian, Polish, or American jokes" here. It's a shame that political correctness has apparently destroyed humor and comedy among acquaintances. I suspect that it may be in large part to the inability for most of us to discern the "intent" of the printed word as easily as the in person spoken word.

I suspect you won't listen to anything anyone says, but It's going to bother me if I don't correct you. France inflicted heavy casualties on the invading German army, and was directly responsible for the Miracle at Dunkirk by holding the line so the British could escape after the Germans outmaneuvered the Allies. Earlier the french military almost undid the invasion at a key moment where Hitler himself voiced fear that he had made a horrible mistake, before the German Army managed to regroup. Also, after a German victory became clearly inevitable, the Italians launched an invasion of France in the south, and got their asses kicked by an army half their size. SO no, you were at best being ignorant, and at worst being a total prick because none of what you said is factual. I highly recommend you drop that attitude and start listening when you are wrong, otherwise you will never learn. Sorry dude I take history class in school and even my teacher laughed at Frances failures so I am gonna go off that and not some France weeb. Also you keep saying “almost” they still lost lol You've got a bad teacher then.

You've got a bad teacher then. Guess so I mean, you either that or you're taking a response to a joke as a genuine affirmation of your own underfed knowledge of European military history.

Oh the irony being a prick on a thread politely asking people to not be pricks, then using the coward’s answer of “just joking”... The thread should focus more on not taking offense so easily. Stating a historical fact is being a prick now?Okay, so European history is yet another thing you need to read up on before commenting. I suggest beginning with the Merovingians if you want to start with the foundation, or perhaps skip ahead to "Napoleonic Strategy" for a particularly notable series on warfare.
"My teacher at school..."
My friends and colleagues who are tenured historians at public research universities would just shrug at this, as I am, and simply suggest to take a real class at a half decent university or at the very least read a few books. Volumes on French military history and combat can be spotted with a cursory use of google scholar.
"French weeb..."
The thread title is "bad behavior", I'm sure conflating cultures and misappropriating slurs is hardly good behavior. To say little of name calling.

Alright, everybody sit down and breathe. I don't want to have to lock this thread, too. reptaronice1, the whole surrender monkey meme is so damn obnoxious and wrongheaded I don't even know where to begin. The French have won more and harder wars than the US has ever fought in. The "Franks" took over most of continental Europe in the latter half of the first millennium, and remained a global superpower until after the Industrial Revolution. They were taken out relatively early in WWII... and put up the most famous resistance movement in history. There's nothing factual about what you're saying. nerdthenord, don't call people names, even if they're being obnoxiously wrong. He may be a clueless kid but you're not, right? Lord Newport, just to be clear, I don't give a damn about being PC, but I do take objection to misinformation. A joke's a joke only until someone takes it seriously, as reptaronice among way too many seems to have (not that I can fully blame him, what with how ubiquitous that "joke" seems to have gotten over there).

Unfortunately some people mistook the title of this thread as an invitation to do so.

Is this the new goal of this forum now, to see how many threads we can get locked down ?

Is this the new goal of this forum now, to see how many threads we can get locked down ? It certainly is starting to seem that way and it is rather frustrating. Probably counts for a substantial role in the forum's attrition rate.

I for one would like to see less of whatever this turned into and more sword related talk.
So here's a some sword related comment. I am very anxiously awaiting a copy of " Nihonto Swords Of Japan: A Visual Glossary (aka Zusetsu Nihontō yōgo jiten)" that is in the mail to me right now. It's not a sword, but I'm excited.

Here's the thing: this is not because of "some people", some passive-aggressively unnamed "they".
This is all about us. How we behave, how we respond to people (and not just some people, either). We all only have control over or responsibility for our own conduct, so that's where we have to start fixing things, and that has to start with not blaming it all on "some people".

The main text (600 pages) has the captions in Japanese and English apparently. In future I am to be that annoying guy with the precise Japanese name for a part no one ever knew even needed a name in the first place
