I did the rapier yesterday and to my surprise I had to chalked it up to failure. The grip felt better when I first picked it up but found the sword harder to hold on to when dry handling. I tried several times throughout the day hoping, but always with the same result. So last night I started stripping the tape off with the intent to reapply at a later date. After making a good start dumb me decided instead of removing then reapplying give it a try now. And so I did. It's a keeper now. Definitely handling better the the cylindrical factory grip. 😊

New grip band has arrived. Here my Windlass Munich sidesword with a double wrap with thicker middle. First time I think I can get to like it. It's still heavy in the hand due to an extremely heavy pommel and hilt. My Munich might be one of the heavier Munichs. With the thin original grip it was just dead weight ("Dumbbell"). Now I can apply my muscle power in a better way than before. The still heavy weight can be used for heavy strikes now, not just for tirering your arm.

Very cool! Perhaps I'll get me one of those Munichs one day...

That’s looking good Andi. Your technique seems to be improving. My P1796 was definitely on the heavy side and I wrapped an oversize grip on it and it improved also. Last week I wrapped my M1840 NCO sword. I used only one layer as I was satisfied with its size and geometry. The last time out I noticed it slipping slightly in my hand, something that hadn’t happened before. Maybe my hand polished it over time? However the result is a much more user friendly grip. I never have like the feel of bare metal in my hand. I'm now waiting on my new tape shipment.

I found out that my second wrap always looks better than the first wrap on the grip. Perhaps the reason is that the first wrap already creates a thicker middle and the second wrap follows this with more evenly loops. I'm thinking of a cheaper tape for the first wrap.

Hanwei Taza/Cup Hilt Rapier with double grip band wrap. The original grip has a very nice wire wrap so I waited to wrap it with band. But now I wanted to know how it feels. Due to its good handling with the original grip it's not soo much better now than before. This sword is an example of excellent mass distribution without a heavy pommel, the pommel is hollow! It's all due to the tapering blade.

That one is also looking good. Not only that but looks more comfortable with the palm swell. I finally did the same to my Pilsen not long ago that had a cylindrical grip though not fluted, and made an improvement in the feel. It also seemed to give the rapier a little more authority.

My new straight katana. I bought it as a ninja-to but it hasn't the typical square tsuba which I don't like anyway. The tsuka ito is cotton and the knots don't alternate, not eye candy. I wanted a straight kat-sword because I've seen such swords in Dark Matter and other tv series. So after only 1 hour it got a grip band wrap. So I'm now prepated for a space zombie attack!

I don't know for anyone else but for me, a grip band wrap on a katana just feels so good in hand, almost decadent I might say. xD (I actually mean that it's my favorite of "standard Longquan ito", be it leather, silk or cotton).

I painted my Ito with epoxy. It's like a hard plastic now. I also painted epoxy over hockey tape with great success Also my hand looks more like a foot than it normally does with that pic and I don't know why. I don't have a foot hand

But the band is soo soft and grippy... Yeah. I wrapped another a couple of weeks back and may post under “Repair” rather than take up space here.

And to Andi, you could always cover the epoxy handle in grip band 😎 will hold the Ito shape better I’ll butt in here and say that each wrap increases the size of the grip. This works out well if the grip is too small for one’s hand or there is a void that needs filling, otherwise...

I simply wrapped mine over the ito so I still have the basic structure, just more comfy. I use a very thin band, probably silicone rubber.

My DSA Dussack with double wrap. With the first band I change the overlapping from 1/4 to 3/4 to get the bulb in the middle of the grip. The second wrap is more even for a better look. Another sword switched from "meh!" to "good!".
